  • Fabricating hydrophobic porous membrane is important for exploring the applications of membrane distillation (MD). In the present paper, poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) hollow fiber membrane was modified by coating polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) on its surface. The effects of PDMS concentration, cross-linking temperature and cross-linking time on the performance of the composite membranes in a vacuum membrane distillation (VMD) process were investigated. It was found that the hydrophobicity and the VMD performance of the PVDF hollow fiber membrane were obviously improved by coating PDMS. The optimal PDMS concentration, cross-linking temperature and cross-linking time were 0.5 wt%, $80^{\circ}C$, and 9 hr, respectively.

  • Our group reported the thermal decomposition of R-22 ($CHClF_2$) refrigerants by nitrogen thermal plasma in previous studies. However, it was proposed that the wastewater generated from the end part of the process contains high concentration of fluoride ion which is a component of R-22. The additional post-treatment process to neutralize the $F^-$ ions in the wastewater was investigated in this study. The wastewater generated through the decomposition of R-22 with the same procedure in the previous work was treated using the neutralizer, $Ca(OH)_2$, and the atmospheric pressure plasma jet (APPJ) independently as a post-treatment process. Wastewater samples were collected directly after the treatment for ion-chromatography analysis to trace the change of the concentration of $F^-$ ion in the wastewater. The fluoride concentration in the wastewater showed the highest value when the single water was used as a neutralizer, and the concentration of fluoride in the wastewater was dramatically reduced when the post-treatments were performed.

  • Purpose: Hydrofluoric acid(HF) is one of the most dangerous mineral acids with the dissociated fluoride ions. The initial corrosive burn is caused by free hydrogen ion, and the second and more severe burn is caused by penetration of fluoride ions into subcutaneous tissues. Silver is a cation producing dressing, an effective antimicrobial agent, but older silver-containing formulations are rapidly inactivated by wound environment, requiring frequent replenishment. But, $Acticoat^{(R)}$ is a relatively new form of silver dressing which helps avoid the problems of earlier agents. The aim of this study is to evaluate effects of $Acticoat^{(R)}$, silver-containing dressing on the treatment for HF injury wound. Methods: From september 2006 to september 2007, the study was carried out with 10 patients who had HF partial thickness burns. $Acticoat^{(R)}$ dressing and 10% calcium gluconate wet gauze dressings in 10 cases. As a principle, in the emergency treatment, partial or complete removal of the nail and early bullectomy along with copious washing with normal saline was done, depending on the degree of HF invasion of the wound. Wound was dressed with $Acticoat^{(R)}$ and 10% calcium gluconate solution. The effect of dressing was investgated by serial bacterial culture and wound exudates assessment. Results: We therefore reviewed 10 cases of HF-induced chemical burns and treatment principle. The 10 cases who came to the hospital nearly immediately after the injury healed completely without sequelae. Conclusion: As the industrial sector develops, the use of HF is increasing more and more, leading to increased incidences of HF-induced chemical burns. The education of patients regarding this subject should be empathized accordingly. In conclusion, $Acticoat^{(R)}$ dressing is a better choice for HF partial thickness burn injuries because of shorter healing time, less pain and more comfortable dressing.

  • This study investigated the effect of pre-treatment on the PEO film formation of AZ91 Mg alloy. The pre-treatment was conducted for 10 min at room temperature in 0.5 M oxalic acid (C2H2O4) solution containing various ammonium fluoride (NH4F) concentrations. The pre-treated AZ91 Mg specimens were anodized at 100 mA/cm2 of 300 Hz AC for 2 min in 0.1 M NaOH + 0.4 M Na2SiO3 solution. When AZ91 Mg alloy was pretreated in 0.5 M oxalic acid with NH4F concentration less than 0.3 M, continuous dissolution of the AZ91 Mg alloy occurred together with the formation of black smuts and arc initiation time for PEO film formation was very late. It was noticed that corrosion rate of the AZ91 Mg alloy became faster if small amount of NH4F concentration, 0.1 M, is added. The fast corrosion is attributable to fast formation of porous fluoride together with porous oxides in the reaction products. On the other hand, when AZ91 Mg alloy was pretreated in 0.5 M oxalic acid with sufficient NH4F more than 0.3 M, a thin and dense protective film was formed on the AZ91 Mg alloy surface which resulted in faster initiation of arcs and formation of PEO film.

  • In this study, the substitution fumigation gases (15% Ethylene Oxide + 85% HFC 134a, 20% Ethylene Oxide + 80% $CO_2$, 99% Sulfuryl Fluoride + 1% Inert Gas) were applied on the metal, pigment, fabric and paper specimen. The result of the fumigation treatment with 15% Ethylene Oxide + 85% HFC 134a (200g/$m^3$, 48hours) is the color changes (${\Delta}E$) of 1st and 2nd Cu specimens showed significant difference as 3.40, 4.17. On the other hand, other specimens except for Cu showed less than 3.0 in chrominance values. The result with 20% Ethylene Oxide + 80% $CO_2$ (150g/$m^3$, 48hours) is that the color changes (${\Delta}E$) of 1st and 2nd specimens were overall less than 3.0 so that color differences were subtle and hardly recognized with naked eyes. So it is proved that the fumigation treatment with Ethylene Oxide 20% + $CO_2$ 80% is relatively stable on materials in this study. In the case of 99% Sulfuryl Fluoride + 1% Inert Gas (50g/$m^3$, 48hours), the color difference of Lead red ($PbO_4$) of pigment was more than 3.0 that was compared with contrast specimens. But chrominance values in the other specimens were less than 3.0 on average.

  • As production of LCD increases, it has become necessary to find an economically efficient way of treating LCD wastewater with high concentration of fluoride. This study focuses on the calcium sources : $CaCl_2$, $Ca(OH)_2$ and $CaCO_3$ for the treatment of the LCD wastewater including high concentration of fluoride. Of course considering removal efficiency and economical aspect, study is continued. Then this study have objective giving aid to field. Consequently, each calcium source's removal efficiency was measured in various pH, calcium dosage, reaction time, and mixing intensity. The optimum operational conditions for $CaCl_2$ were found to be pH of 7, calcium dosage of 0.4[Ca]/[F] (mol / mol), 1 hr of operation and 200 rpm of mixing intensity. For $Ca(OH)_2$, they were pH of 7, calcium dosage of 30 mL/L, 1 hr of operation, and 200 rpm of mixing intensity. While $CaCO_3$ had operational conditions of pH of 4, calcium dosage of 30 mL/L, 1 hr operation and 200 rpm of mixing intensity. But it is recommended to use calcium sources according to various field conditions.

  • This study is about the treatment effect of fluoride varnish on white lesion. The changes in microhardness values and lesion sizes were compared and analyzed in relation to application interval, frequency, etc. Resin blocks were fabricated with the crown portion of permanent molars. Samples were classified into group I(1 week), group II(2 weeks) and group III(3 weeks) based on fluoride application intervals, each with 15 samples. Samples were soaked into a decalcifying solution for 15 days, and stored in artificial saliva at $37^{\circ}C$ thermostat. The changes in microhardness values and lesion sizes, before/after decalcification and after fluoride application, were evaluated. The following results were obtained. 1. Microhardness values in group II and III exhibited almost twice the increasing rate than group I. There were significant differences between group I and II, and group I and III (p<0.05), but none between group II and III (p>0.05). 2. Change in lesion sizes showed no significant differences between group I and II, III (p>0.05). In conclusion, fluoride varnish application results in both qualitative and quantitative improvements in white lesions. The satisfactory results can be obtained when varnish is applied at more than 2 weeks interval.

  • This study investigated the effects of silver diamine fluoride (SDF) and potassium iodide (KI) treatments on the acid resistance of dentin exposed to secondary caries. Sixteen bovine dentin specimens with artificially induced caries were assigned to the following four groups: untreated negative control, untreated positive control, SDF-treated (SDF), and SDF and KI-treated (SDFKI). Multispecies cariogenic biofilms containing Streptococcus mutans, Lactobacillus casei, and Candida albicans were cultured on the specimens for 28 days, except for the negative control group. Specimens from the negative control group were stored in phosphate-buffered saline for that period. After a cariogenic biofilm challenge, the degree of demineralization was evaluated using micro-computed tomography (micro-CT). As a result of data analysis using micro-CT, the demineralization depths of the negative control, positive control, SDF, and SDFKI groups were 149.0 ± 7 ㎛, 392.0 ± 11 ㎛, 206.0 ± 20 ㎛, and 230.0 ± 31 ㎛, respectively. The degree of demineralization was significantly reduced in the SDF and SDFKI groups compared with that in the untreated positive control group. There were no significant differences between the SDF and SDFKI groups. This study confirmed that SDF and SDFKI treatments increase the acid resistance of dentin to secondary caries. KI did not significantly affect the caries-arresting effect of the SDF.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the antibacterial effects of two liquid fluoride materials on Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans). Riva star aquaTM (SDI, Bayswater, Australia), which consists of silver fluoride (AgF, step 1) and potassium iodide (KI, step 2), and Fluor protector® (FP; Ivoclar Vivadent, Liechtenstein) were used for experimental groups. Experimental groups were divided into 4 groups : AgF, KI, AgF + KI and FP. For the positive control (PC) group, ampicillin was used, and the negative control group (NC) did not receive any additional treatment. Each group was divided into 30 and 50 µL groups by volume of liquid and applied to flat-coated S. mutans. The diameter of the zone of inhibition was measured. The PC and AgF groups showed larger diameters than other materials (p < 0.05), and the AgF group showed no significant difference from the PC group in the 50 µL group (p > 0.05). The FP group showed larger diameters than the AgF + KI group in the 30 µL (p = 0.009). The KI group did not show significant difference from the NC group (p > 0.05). AgF is comparable to ampicillin in antibacterial effects on S. mutans, and better than FP.

  • Dentinal hypersensitivity is one of the complicated symptom rather than a disease. It has special reaction or pain over uncovered root by heat, mechanical or chemical stimulations, which are normal with healthy teeth, The purpose of this study is to discover rather MS Coat (oxalate-containing pre-polymerized resin suspension) or Elmex gel(amine fluoride+sodium fluoride) is effective on hypersensitivity after periodontal treatment using NRS(Numerica1 Rating Scales), which it is useful for evaluating pain level. This study has been prepared in Dankook Dental Hospital with generally healthy adult who had been suffered from dentinal hypersensitivity after periodontal treatment. Divided in three groups with saline(control group), MS Coat(test 1 group) and Elmex gel(test 2 group). And then, following evaluations were made at the end of 1 minute, 1 week, 1 month and 3 months. 1. The sequence of higher frequency & severeness of hypersensitivity is water within $7^{\circ}C$, air stream & explorer. 2. As time goes on, 1 minute, 1 week, 1 month & 3 months, severeness of hypersensitivity scored lower with water, air stream and explorer. 3. With explorer, the differences among three groups as time had to seen. 4. With air stream, the sensitivity scored lower after 1min with MS Coat, Elmex, and saline sequence. As time goes on the sensitivity was lower with MS Coat and Elmex than saline, but there was no difference between MS Coat and Elmex. 5. With water in $7^{\circ}C$, the sensitivity was much decreasing with MS Coat and Elmex than saline, but there was no difference between MS Coat and Elmex. As the result, MS Coat and Elmex are effective on hypersensitivity caused by periodontal treatment.
