Effect of frozen storage(0, 15, 30, 40 days, -18$^{\circ}C$), cooking methods(frying, microwaving) and reheating on lipid oxidation in chicken meats were evaluated by measuring thiobarbituric acid value (TBA value) and by measuring fluorescence value. TBA values were increased by storage days and were higher in leg meats than breast meats. According to cooking method, TBA values were higher in frying chicken meats. The fluorescence values were also increased by storage days and were higher in breast meats than leg meats.
This study analyzed the effects of specific factors on the fluorescence index of the fluorescent whitening agent (FWA) that is used for internal addition. The specific factors were identified by the literature review, and a statistical survey was carried out to analyze the effects of those factors on the fluorescence index. Bulk, grammage, fillers and internal sizing agents were selected as the specific factors. The paper samples were prepared with internal FWA in a laboratory. The fluorescence indices of the model papers were measured, and p-values of the specific factors on the fluorescence index were calculated by the SPSS program. Most of p-values were greater than 0.05, so the specific factors do not have a significant impact on the internal FWA fluorescence index.
The substituent effects on the fluorescence of 2-(substituted anilino)benzoic acids and their aluminum chelate compounds were examined and satisfactory linear relationships between Hammett substitute constants, .sigma. and the lowest excited singlet energy levels were obtained. But fluorescence intensity only made a qualitative relationship with .sigma. values of substituent groups. Effects of solvents and metal ions on the native and metal chelate fluorescence of the above derivatives were also investigated.
Deep blue fluorescence of resorcin blue-stained callose was observed only in the potato leafroll virus (PLRV)-infected potato plants, but not in other potato viruses investigated. The plant sections stained with aniline blue showed non-specific fluorescence regardless of PLRV infection, which means that aniline blue is not suitable for the staining of callose induces by PLRV infection. The fluorescence of resorcin blue-stained callose was more easily detectable than autofluorescence by a direct fluorescence detection method because of its deep blue color. The lateral branch of lower leaves was turned out to be the best material for fluorescence observation of all plant parts tested. In comparison of diagnostic efficacy of this technique to enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), PLRV infected potato plants showed corresponding increment of the fluorescence of resorcin blue stained callose as absorption values in ELISA increased. In the future, the criteria measuring the fluorescence objectively are thought to be determined for the practical application to the diagnosis of potato leafroll disease.
Chlorophyll fluorescence has been researched for assessing fruit post-harvest quality and condition. The objective of this preliminary research was to investigate the potential of fluorescence spectroscopy for measuring apple fruit quality. Ultraviolet (UV) and blue light was used as an excitation source for inducing fluorescence in apples. Fluorescence spectra were measured from 'Golden Delicious' (GD) and 'Red Delicious' (RD) apples using a visible/near-infrared spectrometer after one, three, and five minutes of continuous UV/blue light illumination. Standard destructive tests were performed to measure fruit firmness, skin and flesh color, soluble solids and acid content from the apples. Calibration models for each of the three illumination time periods were developed to predict fruit quality indexes. The results showed that fluorescence emission decreased steadily during the first three minutes of UV/blue light illumination and was stable within five minutes. The differences were minimal in the model prediction results based on fluorescence data at one, three or five minutes of illumination. Overall, better predictions were obtained for apple skin chroma and hue and flesh hue with values for the correlation coefficient of validation between 0.80 and 0.90 for both GD and RD. Relatively poor predictions were obtained for fruit firmness, soluble solids content, titrational acid, and flesh chroma. This research has demonstrated that fluorescence spectroscopy is potentially useful for assessing selected quality attributes of apple fruit and further research is needed to improve fluorescence measurements so that better predictions of fruit quality can be achieved.
Objectives: Dental plaque emits red fluorescence under a visible blue light near the ultra-violet end of the light spectrum. The fluorescence characteristics of each microorganism have been reported in several studies. The aim of this study was to evaluate changes in red fluorescence of oral microorganisms that is affected by blood in the culture media. Methods: The gram-positive Actinomyces naeslundii (AN, KCTC 5525) and Lactobacillus casei (LC, KCTC 3109) and gram negative Prevotella intermedia (PI, KCTC 3692) that are known to emit red fluorescence were used in this study. Each bacterium was activated in broth and cultivated in different agar media at $37^{\circ}C$ for 7 days. Tryptic soy agar with hemin and vitamin $K_3$ (TSA), TSA with sheep blood (TSAB), basal medium mucin (BMM) medium, and BMM with sheep blood (BMMB) were used in this study. Fluorescence due to bacterial growth was observed under 405-nm wavelength blue light using the quantitative light-induced fluorescence-digital (QLF-D) device. The red, green, and blue fluorescence values of colonies were obtained using image-analysis software and the red to green ratio (R/G value) and red to total RGB ratio (R/RGB value) were calculated for quantitative comparison. Results: The QLF-D images of the AN, LC, and PI colonies showed red fluorescence in all media, but the fluorescence of all bacteria was reduced in TSA and BMM media, compared with in TSAB and BMMB media. Both the R/G and the R/RGB values of all bacteria were significantly reduced in growth media without blood (P<0.001). Conclusions: Based on this in vitro study, it can be concluded that red fluorescence of oral bacteria can be affected by growth components, especially blood. Blood-containing medium could be a significant factor influencing red fluorescence of oral bacteria. It can be further hypothesized that bleeding in the oral cavity can increase the red fluorescence of dental plaque.

Fluorescent probes bound to DNA typically display nanosecond decay times and reveal only nanosecond motions. We extend the time range of measurable DNA dynamics using $[Ru(pby)_2(dppz)]^{2+}$ (bpy=2.2'-bipyridine, dppz=dipyrido[3,2-a2',3'-c]phenazine) (RuBD) which displays a mean lifetime near 90 ns. To test the usefulness of RuBD as a probe for diffusive processes in calf thymus DNA, we compared the efficiencies of fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) using three donors which display lifetimes near 5 ns for acridine orange (AO), 22 ns for ethidum bromide (EB) and 92 ns for RuBD, with nile blue (NB) as the acceptor. The F rster distances for AO-NB, EB-NB and RuBD-NB donor-acceptor pairs were 42.3, 52.3, and $30.6{\;}{\AA}$, respectively. All three donors showed dramatic decreases in fluorescence intensities and more rapid intensity decays with increasing NB concentrations. The intensity decays of AO and EB in the presence of varying concentrations of NB were satisfactorily described by the one-dimensional FRET model without diffusion (Blumen and Manz, 1979). In the case of the long-lifetime donor RuBD, the experimental phase and modulation somewhat deviated from the recovered values computed from this model. The recovered NB concentrations and FRET efficiencies from the model were slightly larger than the expected values, however, the recovered and expected values did not show a significant difference. Thus, it is suggested that the lifetime of RuBD is too short to measure diffusive processes in calf thymus DNA.
Authors attempted grid performance test by film methods than can be used easily on the hospital. And we investigated the utility of it comparing with the values measured by fluorescence meter recommended to be used ordinarily. The result was that, the characteristic values obtained by film methods was almost the same as those obtained by fluorescence meter methods. And besides plain film methods that can be applied simply showed small standard deviation. Therefore, we considered that it can be adopted easily on the labor that was not ready for special measuring apparatus like fluorescence meter.

Photopolymer films containing fluorescent anthracene polymer, polymethyleneanthracene (PMAn), were prepared with different concentrations of PMAn for holographic recording useful for security documents. The fluorescent photopolymer film showed enhanced fluorescent intensity due to the micro-separation which arose from grating formation and diffusion during photopolymerization. Experimental values of diffraction efficiency were well matched to the simulated values for photopolymers having different PMAn concentrations. Holography patterning was carried out using the fluorescent photopolymer under a photo-mask. A grating was confirmed using microscope techniques in the recorded area under the pattern. Importantly the recorded area showed enhanced fluorescence compared to the unrecorded part, allowing fluorescence patterns at micro scale along with the submicron grating pattern. The fluorescence pattern recorded on the photopolymer film provides additional readability of holographic reading and thus is useful for secure recording and reading of information.
In order to investigate the oligomerization state of the plasma membrane proteolipid apoprotein purified from the bovine kidney, fluorescence polarization experiment was carried out in the two different solvent systems, i.e., water and organic solvent(chloroform-methanol). The molecular volumes of the proteins estimated from the Perrin equation, were to be 45,258$A^3$ and 17,608$A^3$ in water and organic solvent, respectively. These values indicate that a trimerization is possibly occurring in the aqueous environment. As an auxiliary experiment for the calculation of the molecular volume using Perrin equation, fluorescence quenching constants ($K_q$) with the quencher acrylamide and fluorescence lifetimes (${\tau}_F$) of the intrinsic fluorophore tryptophan residue were estimated in the two different solvent systems. $K_q$ in water was 18.21$M^{-1}$ and it was 46.24$M^{-1}$ in organic solvent. Fluorescence lifetimes of tryptophan residue were calculated to be 2.80 nsec. in water and 3.81 nsec. in organic solvent, respectively.
