  • The CFB boilers technology is facing a number of challenges. Among them, boiler tube erosion, sintering by bed inventory overheating and high self consumed service power are major ones. This study was conducted to obtain allowable bed inventory with the Yeosu Power Plant, a 300 MW class CFB boiler. For the test, bed pressure was reduced from design pressure of 4.5 KPa to 2.5 KPa by reducing bed inventory, at fixed turbine output, coal consumption rate and air flow. Consequently, reducing the lower bed inventory is effective to decrease bed temperature but excessive reducing might increase bed temperature due to lack of circulating fluidized materials. Also, in case of the Yeosu Plant boiler using subbituminous coal as its primary fuel, its bed temperature change is highly affected by not only the amount of bed inventory, but also the boiler capacity and coal contents.

  • The fluidized bed electrode reactor(FBER) with conducting particles has been made use of the removal of metals from dilute electroplating rinse water. The electrolysis was carried out under the conditions of diaphragm current density with 2~28A/$dm^2$ and bed expansion with 20~50%. Recirculating batch operations have been shown that the metal concentration dropped exponentially and may be taken down to 10 ppm. And then, the current efficiency at a concentration of 10 ppm copper was 37% under the conditions of 30% bed expansion and 6 A/$dm^2$, and at concentrated electrolyte (2000ppm copper) was over 80% in the range of 8~28A/$dm^2$ and 20~50% bed expansion. One of the technical possibilities of fluidized bed electrolysis is the separation of copper and nickel from a mixed solution of copper and nickel.

  • In this paper, numerical simulations on conical fluidized bed combustors were carried out to estimate the effect of coefficients of restitution between particle and particle and particle to wall on hydrodynamics and heat transfer. The Eulerian-Eulerian two-fluid model was used to simulate the hydrodynamics and heat transfer in a conical fluidized bed combustor. The solid phase properties were calculated by applying the kinetic theory of granular flow. Simulations results show that increasing the restitution coefficient between the particle and particle results in increasing the bed pressure drop. On other hand, the increasing of particle to wall coefficient of restitution results in decreasing the bed pressure drop. It is found that the coefficient of restitution has little effect on heat transfer.

  • This study evaluates the economic feasibility of industrializing fluidized bed dryer for wood particles. The theoretically required heat energy and energy efficiency were evaluated using a pilot scale fluidized bed dryer. When Mongolian Oak wood particles with 50% initial moisture content were dried in the fluidized bed dryer with air of $70^{\circ}C$ air circulating at 1.1-1.3 m/s for 30 minutes, the total theoretically required heat energy was 2,177 kJ. Of this, 1,763 kJ (approximately 81.0%) was used to heat the air flowing in from outside the dryer and 386 kJ (approximately 17.7%) was used to heat and remove water from the wood particles. Actual energy consumed was 7,560 kJ, giving energy efficiency of 28.8%. Thus, to industrialize a drying method such as fluidized bed drying, where the dryer volume is significantly larger than the volume of wood particles, it is necessary to minimize energy loss and maximize energy efficiency by designing the dryer size considering the amount of wood particles and choosing a suitable air circulation rate.

  • Mixed-firing of a bituminous and an anthracite coal carried out in a batch fluidized bed combustor(0.109 m-I.D., 0.9 m-height). Effect of particle size an mixing fraction of anthracite and bituminous coal combustion characteristics were studied. The temperature profiles and pressure fluctuation properties were measured to interpret the combustion characteristics in a batch fluidized bed combustor. The used domestic anthracite coal has heating value of 2010 kcal/kg and the imported high-calorific bituminous coal has heating value of 6520 kcal/kg. The combustion characteristics in a batch fluidized bed combustor could be interpreted by using pressure fluctuation properties and temperature increasing rates. It was found that the optimum anthracite mixing percentage could be predicted analyzing the combustion rate and fluidization characteristics, The optimum mixing fraction was about 30 %. The different burning region of fluidized bed combustor was measured by temperature increasing rates.

  • The objects of this study were to investigate emissions of air pollutant the particles as well as the combustibility of the low grade domestic anthracite coal and imported high-calorific bituminous coal in the fluidized bed coal combustor. The production of air pollution from anthracite-bituminous coal blend combustion in a fluidized bed coal combustor was evaluated. The effects of air velocity and anthracite fraction on the reaching time of steady state condition was also evaluated. We used coal samples the domestic low grade anthracite coal with heating value of 2,010 kcal/kg and the imported high grade bituminous coal with heating value of 6,520 kcal/kg. The experimental results are presented as follows. The time of reaching to steady state was affected by the temperature variation. The steady state time was about 120 minute at 0.3 m/s which was the fastest. It has been found that $O_2$ and $CO_2$ concentration were reached steady state at about 100 minute. As the height of fluidized bed becomes higher, the concentration s of $SO_2$ and $NO_x$ mainly increased. The concentration of freeboard was the highest and emission concentration was diminished. Also, as anthracite fraction increased, the emission of $SO_x$ concentration was increased. But, it has been found that the variation of $NO_x$ concentration with anthracite fraction was negligible and the difference of emission concentration according to air flow rates was negligible, too. It has been found that $O_2$ concentration decreased and $CO_2$ concentration increased as the height of fluidized bed increased. As anthracite fraction increased, the mass of elutriation particles increased, and $CO_2$ concentration decreased. Also, as air velocity increased, $O_2$ concentration decreased and $CO_2$ concentration increased. Regardless-of anthracite fraction and flow rate, the combustible weight percentage in elutriation particles were high in the case of fine particles.

  • In this study, hydrogen sulfide ($H_2S$), ammonia ($NH_3$), and benzene, which represent the major odor from a natural leather process plant, were removed using a fluidized bed bioreactor and biofilter including Thiobacillus sp. IW and a MY microbial consortium. The critical removal rate was $12g m^{-3}h^{-1}\;for\;H_2S,\;11g m^{-3}h^{-1}\;for\;NH_3\;and\;28 g m^{-3}h^{-1}$ for benzene by the fluidized bed bioreactor, and $8.5g m^{-3}h^{-1}\;for\;H_2S\;7g m^{-3}h^{-1}\;for\;NH_3,\;and\;25 g m^{-3}h^{-1}$ for benzene in the biofilter. The average removal efficiency of $H_2S$, $NH_3$, and benzene by continuous operation for over 30 days with the fluidized bed bioreactor was $95{\pm}3\%,\;99{\pm}1\%,\;and\;98{\pm}5\%$, respectively, whereas that with the biofilter was $96{\pm}4\%,\;95{\pm}4\%,\;and\;97{\pm}3\%$, respectively. Therefore, the critical removal rate of $H_2S$, $NH_3$, and benzene was higher in the fluidized bed bioreactor, whereas the removal efficiency on the continuous operation was similar in both bioreactors.

  • During the commissioning period in Tonghae thermal power plant which is the largest circulating fluidized bed boiler in the nation, a considerable amount of clinker was formed at FBAC and seal pot. Various attempts, for example, concentration analysis, surface phenomena, thermal characterization, and crystal structure of ash, bed sand, limestone, clinker, and mixture of each gradients have been studied to identify the causes of clinker formed in circulating fluidized bed boiler. As the results, the characterization of black particles in which separated from the clinker is more similar to that of bed sand, on the other hand, white particles are more similar to ash. In addition, the sintering temperature of sand is over $1,200^{\circ}C$ and this temperature was decreased as limestone is added to bed material. The cause of clinker was proved that ash was sticked to molten or sintered sand or limestone in the area of high temperature in the circulating system.

  • Effects of packing materials on the pressure fluctuations in a fluidized bed have been analysed using statistical method to interpret fluidized bed behavior. The experiments were carried out in a fluidized bed of 6.7cm - ID, and the experimental variables were particle size and its distributions, fluidizing velocity, aspect ratio, and packing materials, etc. Screen packings are used as packing material, the properties of the pressure fluctuations in the fluidized bed were measured by a differential pressure transducer. The measured properties for the pressure fluctuations were the mean, the standard deviation, and the major frequency of the power spectral density functions, etc. The standard deviations of the pressure fluctuations have been slightly affected in the radial directions of fluidized bed, and almost constant in axial directions the height above 4.5cm of the distributor of fuidized bed without packing materials. The major frequency decreased with increaing packing size, whereas it showed maximum at 10% of packing materials. It has been found that the standard deviation of the pressure fluctuations can effectively explain the fluidized phenomena, and the packing materials severely affected the properties of the pressure fluctuations.
