Recently, as a means of resolving the issue of legal liability in the event of an accident or a disaster, a wide variety of simulation techniques, such as structural and structure-fluid interaction analysis, have been used in the field of forensic engineering. The plate girder bridge discussed in this paper was being constructed between a pier and an abutment to expand an existing bridge, but an accident whereby the bridge overturned occurred at the end of the concrete laying process for a protective wall. This accident was caused by additional loads not being considered at the time of the design as well as the actual construction being different from the design. The additional loads ultimately generated a negative support force. In this study, we determined the cause of the accident by comparing the structural stability of the original design with that of the additional, non-conforming construction using MIDAS structural analysis.
In the present study, a methodology for developing fragilities of arch concrete dams to assess their performance against seismic hazards is introduced. Firstly, the probability risk and fragility curves are presented, followed by implementation and representation of the way this method is used. Amirkabir arch concrete dam was subjected to non-linear dynamic analyses. A modified three dimensional rotating smeared crack model was used to take the nonlinear behavior of mass concrete into account. The proposed model considers major characteristics of mass concrete. These characteristics are pre-softening behavior, softening initiation criteria, fracture energy conservation, suitable damping mechanism and strain rate effect. In the present analysis, complete fluid-structure interaction is included to account for appropriate fluid compressibility and absorptive reservoir boundary conditions. In this study, the Amirkabir arch concrete dam is subjected to a set of 8 three-component earthquakes each scaled to 10 increasing intensity levels. Using proposed nonlinear smeared crack model, nonlinear analysis is performed where the structure is subjected to a large set of scaled and un-scaled ground motions and the maximum responses are extracted for each one and plotted. Based on the results, fragility curves were plotted according to various and possible damages indexes. Discrete damage probabilities were calculated using statistical methods for each considered performance level and incremental nonlinear analysis. Then, fragility curves were constructed based on the lognormal distribution assumption. Two damage indexes were introduced and compared to one another. The results indicate that the dam has a proper stability under earthquake conditions at MCE level. Moreover, displacement damages index is more conservative and impractical in the fragility analysis than tensional damage index.
In ocean industry, free surface type ART (Anti Roll tank) system has been widely used to suppress the roll motion of floating structures. In those, various obstacles have been devised to obtain the sufficient damping and to enhance the controllability of freely rushing water inside the tank. Most of previous researches have paid on the development of simple mathematical formula for coupled ship-ARTs analysis although other numerical and experimental approaches exist. Little attention has been focused on the use of 3D panel method for preliminary design of free surface type ART despite its advantages in computational time and general capacity for hydrodynamic damping estimation. This study aims at developing a potential theory based hydrodynamic code for the analysis of floating structure with baffled ARTs. The sloshing in baffled tanks is modeled through the linear potential theory with FE discretization and it coupled with hydrodynamic equations of floating structures discretized by BEM and FEM, resulting in direct coupled FE-BE formulation. The general capacity of proposed formulation is emphasized through the coupled hydrodynamic analysis of floating structure and sloshing inside baffled ARTs. In addition, the numerical methods for natural sloshing frequency tuning and estimation of hydrodynamic damping ratio of liquid sloshing in baffled tanks undergoing wave exiting loads are developed through the proposed formulation. In numerical examples, effects of natural frequency tuning and baffle ratios on the maximum and significant roll motions are investigated.

When a large ship is advancing in waves, ship undergoes the hydroelastic response, and this have influence on structural stability and the fatigue destruction etc. of ship. The main objective of this research is to develop an accurate and convenient method on the hydroelastic response analysis of ships on the real sea states. We analyzed hydroelastic responses, which is formulated by finite element method. The numerical approach for the hydroelastic responses is based on the combination of the three dimensional source distribution method, the dynamic response analysis and the spectral analysis method. The calculated results show good agreement with the experimental and calculated ones by Watanabe.
There have been many academic researches on the aerodynamic design of wind turbine based on blade element method (BEM) and momentum theory (MT, or actuating disk theory). However, in the real world, the turbine blade design requires many additional constraints more than theoretical analysis. The standard procedure is studied in the present paper to design new blades for the wind turbine system ranged from the small size from 1 to 10 kW. From the experience of full design of a 10 kW blade, the authors tried to set up a standard procedure for the aerodynamic design based on IEC 61400-2. Wind-turbine scale, rotating speed, and geometrical chord/twist distribution at the segmented span positions are calculated with a suitable BEM/MT code, and the geometrical shape of tip and root should be modified after considering various parameters: wing-tip vortex, aerodynamic noise, turbine efficiency, structural safety, convenience of fabrication, and even economic factor likes price, etc. The evaluated data is passed to the next procedure of structural design, but some of them should still be corresponded with each other: the fluid-structure interaction is one of those problems not yet solved, for example. Consequently, the design procedure of small wind-turbine blades is set up for the mass production of commercial products in this research.

In this study, the flow characteristics and structural safety of a 500W class vertical-axis wind turbines(VAWT) for a fishing boat are investigated by numerical simulations. Guide vanes to increase the performance of the VAWT are investigated. And the best guide vane in the numerical simulations is applied to the VAWT. Also, modal analyses are performed to find out the natural frequencies of the VAWT, and the resonance safety of the VAWT is evaluated. The structural analysis of the VAWT is carried out by one-way FSI(Fluid Structure Interaction). And the results are used for the evaluation of structural safety according to IEC 61400-1 code. Finally, the possibility of the installation of the VAWT on the wheelhouse of a 9.77ton class fishing boat is checked. The results of the present research could be used as one of the fundamental data to design a VAWT for a fishing boat.

Sloshing loads, produced by the violent liquid free-surface motions inside the cargo tank have become an important design parameter in ship building industry since there have been demands for the increased sizes of the cargo containment system of LNG carriers. In this study, sloshing impact pressure acting on the shell of the spherical cargo tank of an LNG carrier as well as dynamic pressure and flow behavior around the pump tower located at the center of the tank have been calculated. Comparative numerical sloshing simulations for a spherical LNG tank using 2-D LR.FLUIDS which is based on the finite difference method and 3-D MSC.DYTRAN which is capable of calculating nonlinear fluid-structure interaction have been carried out. A method of calculating sloshing-induced dynamic loads and the subsequent structural strength analysis for pump tower of a spherical LNG carrier using MSC. DYTRAN and MSC.NASTRAN have been presented.

This research focused on minimizing the response of fixed cylindrical offshore structures to a ship impact considering the seawater fluid part. A collision between a ship and offshore structure is generally a complex problem and it is often impractical to perform rigorous finite element analyses to include all the effects and sequences during the collision. The structural behavior of a fixed cylindrical type offshore substructure with a seawater fluid part has a simpler response and small deformation due to the dissipation of impact energy. Upon applying the impact force of a ship to the cylindrical structure, the maximum acceleration, internal energy, and plastic strain are calculated for each load cases using Ls-dyna finite element software. In the maximum cases 2.0 m/s velocity, the response result for the structure was carried out to compare between having a fluid region and no fluid region. Fluid-structure interaction analysis was performed using the ALE method, which make it possible to apply a fluid region on the impact problem. The case of a fixed cylindrical type offshore structure without a seawater fluid part can be a more conservative design.

In this paper, the wind-induced response characteristics of freeform shaped tall building is studied by using FSI analysis. The analytical models are twist shaped ones at representing type of atypical tall building, and this study focused on the relationship between twist angle and wind acceleration. Firstly, 1-way FSI analysis is performed, so maximum lateral displacement of the analytical model for 100 years return period wind speed is calculated, then the elastic modulus of a structure that satisfies the constraints condition is evaluated. And 2-way FSI analysis is carried out. so acceleration of the analytical model for the evaluated modulus of elasticity and arbitrary density is predicted through time history analysis. The basic model is a set of a square shape, height is 400m, slenderness ratio is 8, and twist model is rotated at square model from 0 to 90 degrees at intervals of 15 degrees and from 90 to 360 degrees at intervals of 90 degrees. According to the result of predicting wind acceleration by the shape of each model, the wind vibration effect of square shape model is confirmed to be sensitive more than a twist shape ones.

In modern naval ships, the design of submarines has continually evolved to improve survivability and it is also important to design ship against shock response. Exiting underwater ship design has been peformed due to results of static analysis considering shock acceleration by simple method. However, it can not be anticipated good assesment. The present study applied the Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) technique, a fluid-structure interaction approach, to simulate an underwater explosion and investigate the survival capability of a damaged submarine liquefied oxygen tank. The Lagrangian-Eulerian coupling algorithm and the equations of state for explosives and seawater were also reviewed. It is shown that underwater explosion analysis using the ALE technique can accurately evaluate structural damage after attack. This procedure could be applied quantitatively to real structural design.
