  • Thermal-fluid analysis is performed numerically to figure out the characteristics of heat transfer in a thermosyphon varying with the aspect ratio of geometry and the filling ratio of working fluid. The computational results are reasonable compared with the experimental data and visualized. The thermal resistance and the convective heat transfer coefficients are evaluated with the aspect ratio of thermosyphon and the filling ratio of working fluid, respectively. In conclusion, the thermal resistance decreases as the length of evaporator increases. However, the variation of a condenser length is nearly independent on the thermal resistance. In order to raise the performance of thermosyphon, the working fluid needs to be filled over 75%. In addition, Nusselt numbers in the evaporator and the condenser show 275 and 304, respectively.

  • Mixed convective vortex flow in the three-dimensional rectangular channel filled with high viscous fluid(Pr=909) is investigated computationally under various operating conditions. The Reynolds number is varied from 0 to $5{\times}10^{-1}$, the Rayleigh number from $10^3$ to $5{\times}10^4$. The three-dimensional governing equations are discretized using the finite volume method. The effects of Reynolds number and Rayleigh number are presented and discussed. From a parametric study, it is found that vortex flow pattern of mixed convection in rectangular channels can be classified into three flow patterns basically, but the new vortex flow structures containing wave rolls are found, which are affected by Rayleigh number and Reynolds number. From this results, we can draw a flow regime map to delineate various vortex flow patterns in the high viscosity fluid mixed convective flow.

  • We present a short review for authors' previous work on direct numerical simulations for inertialess hard particle suspensions formulated either with a Newtonian fluid or with viscoelastic polymeric fluids to understand the microstructural evolution and the bulk material behavior. We employ two well-defined bi-periodic domain concepts such that a single cell problem with a small number of particles may represent a large number of repeated structures: one is the sliding bi-periodic frame for simple shear flow and the other is the extensional bi-periodic frame for planar elongational flow. For implicit treatment of hydrodynamic interaction between particle and fluid, we use the finite-element/fictitious-domain method similar to the distributed Lagrangian multiplier (DLM) method together with the rigid ring description. The bi-periodic boundary conditions can be effectively incorportated as constraint equations and implemented by Lagrangian multipliers. The bulk stress can be evaluated by simple boundary integrals of stresslets on the particle boundary in such formulations. Some 2-D example results are presented to show effects of the solid fraction and the particle configuration on the shear and elongational viscosity along with the micro-structural evolution for both particles and fluid. Effects of the fluid elasticity has been also presented.

  • In the engine room and the aft part areas of the ship, there exist so many tank structures contacting with fresh water or sea water or oil. If these structures exhibit excessive vibrations during the sea trials, it takes a lot of cost, time and effort to improve vibration situation because the reinforcement work requires emptying the fluid out of the tanks, additional welding and special painting. It is therefore very important to predict a precise vibration characteristics of the tank structures at the design stage, however it is not easy to estimate vibration characteristics of the structures because of difficulties for accurate evaluation of the added (or virtual) mass effect due to the fluid inside the tank. In this paper, numerical and experimental approaches have been performed to present same fundamental data necessary for anti-vibration design of tank structures contacting with fluid, by investigating vibration behaviors of rectangular tank structure for various water depths.

  • A right cylindrical tank with sloping bottom and top (${\beta}-effect$) is filled with two-layered fluid and is put on the rotating table. External fluid of same density as the lower-layer fluid is continuously injected to drive the lower-layer current. By minimizing the interfacial stress between two layers the motion in the lower-layer deformed the shape of interface such that the upper-layer adjust itself to the variations of the interface in terms of its direction of flow patterns .The most significant parameter is the internal Froude Number($F_1$) and when $F_1$ is greater than 6 two-cellular circulation of the upper-layer changes its direction, there by creates a separation of Western boundary current. The separation position moves to the most northward when $F_1$ equals to 6.

  • Daehwa tungsten-molybdenum deposits is fissure filled quartz veins occurring in Precambrian granite gneiss adjacent to the contact with Mesozoic biotite granite mass. Essential ore minerals are molybdenum and wolframite accompaning scheelite, cassiterite, chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite, pyrite and bismuthinites. Gangue minerals are quartz and little muscovte, fluorite, beryl and Carbonate minerals. Fluid inclusions in quartz, fluorite, beryl, scheelite and calcite have filling temperature ranges of $170-353^{\circ}C$. According to the studies of mineral paragenesis and filling temperature of fluid inclusion indicate that main tungsten and molybdnum mineralization have taken place with the minerals whose filling temperature ranges 205 to $353^{\circ}C$. Liquid $CO_2$ bearing fluid inclusions are characteristic in the quartz and early fluorite of tungsten and tungsten bearing molybdenum veins but hardly recognized from molybdemun veins. Estimated $CO_2$ concentration according to diagram proposed by the Takenouchi ranges from 10 to 20wt%. These facts suggest that tungsten mineralization may be related to the $CO_2$ content of the hydrothermal solution during the mineralizing period.

  • The present investigation deals, heat and mass transfer characteristics with the effect of slip on the hydromagnetic pulsatile flow through a parallel plate channel filled with saturated porous medium. Based on the pulsatile flow nature, exact solution of the governing equations for the fluid velocity, temperature and concentration are obtained by using two term perturbation technique subject to physically appropriate boundary conditions. The expressions of skin friction, Nusselt number and Sherwood number are also derived. The numerical values of the fluid velocity, temperature and concentration are displayed graphically whereas those of shear stress, rate of heat transfer and rate of mass transfer at the plate are presented in tabular form for various values of pertinent flow parameters. By increasing the slip parameter at the cold wall the velocity increases whereas the effect is totally reversed in the case of shear stress at the cold wall.

  • A numerical investigation has been carried out for a solar system, which consists of all glass solar vacuum tubes Water is heated as it flows through the coaxial fluid conduit inserted in each tube. The space between the exterior of the fluid conduit and the glass tube is filled with antifreeze solution. This is to facilitate heat transfer from the solar heated absorber surface to water and to prevent the functional problems due to freezing in frigid weather conditions. A one-dimensional steady state model is fully described which will be used to develop three-dimensional model using STAR-CD. These models could be used efficiently in designing all-glass solar collector tubes with different geometrical parameters other than those considered in the present analysis. Results show good agreement when compared with other experimental data demonstrating the reliability of the present model.
