  • This study reviewed the capturing performance of a canopy hood used in some melting processes of a casting manufacturing factory through a site survey. In addition, this study compared and evaluated the flow field and pressure field for the plans to enhance the hazardous air pollutants collection capacity by using CFD model. The case-2(flange attached + double hood) can be improved in terms of collection performance, but is expected to increase in hood static pressure by about 70% more than the existing structure, so it was shown that its site applicability is not good. It is judged that the shape of case-3(flange attached + double cone attached) is most suitable to improve the suction efficiency. This is because a double cone is installed at the center of the opening to concentrate the flow rate on the edge of the hood and control the hume rising to the center of the hood without a static pressure rise via the slope of the cone.

  • Pre-stressed concrete poles are among the supporting systems used to support transmission lines. It is essential to protect transmission line systems from harsh environmental attacks such as downburst wind events. Typically, these poles are designed to resist synoptic wind loading as current codes do not address high wind events in the form of downbursts. In the current study, the behavior of guyed pre-stressed concrete Transmission lines is studied under downburst loads. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this study is the first investigation to assess the behaviour of guyed pre-stressed concrete poles under downburst events. Due to the localized nature of those events, identifying the critical locations and parameters leading to peak forces on the poles is a challenging task. To overcome this challenge, an in-house built numerical model is developed incorporating the following: (1) a three-dimensional downburst wind field previously developed and validated using computational fluid dynamics simulations; (2) a computationally efficient analytical technique previously developed and validated to predict the non-linear behaviour of the conductors including the effects of the pretension force, sagging, insulator's stiffness and the non-uniform distribution of wind loads, and (3) a non-linear finite element model utilized to simulate the structural behaviour of the guyed pre-stressed concrete pole considering material nonlinearity. A parametric study is conducted by varying the downbursts locations relative to the guyed pole while considering three different span values. The results of this parametric study are utilized to identify critical downburst configurations leading to peak straining actions on the pole and the guys. This is followed by comparing the obtained critical load cases to new load cases proposed to ASCE-74 loading committee. A non-linear failure analysis is then conducted for the three considered guyed pre-stressed concrete transmission line systems to determine the downburst jet velocity at which the pole systems fail.

  • This paper reports on the internal flow of a centrifugal mini pump working at the low flow rate operating conditions. The RNG $\kappa-\varepsilon$ turbulence model was employed to simulate the three-dimensional turbulent flow in the pump. To examine and certify the simulation results, a transparent acrylic centrifugal mini pump model which is suitable for PIV measurement has been developed. The tongue region and the passages region between blades were investigated using PIV. In order to eliminate the effect of refraction on the area closed to the wall and increase the measurement accuracy, the fluorescent particles were scatted into the working fluid with the tracing particles. It is found from the calculation and PIV measurement results that there is a large area of recirculation flow near the tongue at low flow rate operating conditions. The computationally predicted water head using the $\kappa-\varepsilon$ turbulence model at low flow rate operating conditions are in very good agreement with the experimentally measured water head and the mean velocity distributions at investigation area obtained by PIV and calculation showed a satisfactory agreement as well. Meanwhile, the results of PIV measurements show that the flow status in one passage is different to another. And for capturing the internal flow detail information, the $\kappa-\varepsilon$ turbulence model is not very suitable.

  • Air-heating vaporizer usually is used to regasify LNG at satellite areas because of the small demand of natural gas there. The common type of air heating vaporizer which exists in the market is the longitudinally finned type with 8 fins, 55 mm fin length and 2mm fin thickness. To contribute in developing an efficient air-heating vaporizer, experiment on finned type air-heating vaporizer using 8 fins, 50mm(fin length) with 2 mm(fin thickness) which exist in the market and 4 fins, 75 mm(fin length) with 2 mm(fin thickness), which is proposed, were conducted. Then, both types of vaporizers are compared. The experiments were conducted in one hour by varying the ambient condition and the length of the vaporizer. The ambient air was controlled so that it has the same temperature, humidity and air velocity with air condition in every season available and the length was varied 4000 mm, 6000 mm and 8000 mm for each type of vaporizer. Additional experiment with longer duration, i.e. In this experiment, the main aspects in analyzing the characteristics of the air heating vaporizer the inlet-outlet enthalpy difference and the outlet temperature of the working fluid. $LN_2$ is used to substitute LNG because of safety reason. The results show that the characteristics of the finned type 4fin75le vaporizer are comparable to finned type 8fin50le vaporizer.

  • This paper investigates the indoor-air-quality (IAQ) characteristics of the interior space equipped with system air-conditioner. The behaviors of individual variables such as temperature, humidity and concentration of carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) that influence on IAQ of the interior space were characterized under various cooling conditions by numerical and experimental studies. The numerical analysis predicting the temperature behavior of the interior space was conducted, and its results showed a good agreement with the experimental ones. The $CO_2$ concentration and humidity were measured and their time dependent behaviors were monitored and analyzed. From the results, it was found that there existed the differences of the time-dependent behaviors of IAQ variables according to the locations. In addition, it is demonstrated that the large discharge angle of $45^{\circ}$ made the temperature profile more irregular and the high discharge flow of 5.34 m/s produced similar temperature profiles at three different sensing locations. Finally, the humidity of interior space was less sensitive to the changes of the air cooling conditions than the case of temperature and the $CO_2$ concentration increase mainly depended on the number of individuals inside the space.

  • The fundamental characteristics of nonlinear free-surface waves generated by a shallowly submerged 3-dimensional hydrofoil are investigated. The fluid is assumed inviscid, incompressible and its motion irrotational. The surface tension on the free-surface is neglected. The hydrofoil is represented by a horseshoe vortex system whose shape is assumed fixed. Also the strengths of vortices are assumed given. The exact problem for the wave potential due to the horseshoe vortex system is formulated by the variational principle based on the classical Hamilton's principle. The localized finite element method is used in the numerical computations. In order to increase the numerical efficiency, an intermediate nonlinear-to-linear transition buffer subdomain for a smooth matching is introduced between the fully nonlinear computation subdomain and the truncated linear infinite subdomain. Also used is the modal analysis to reduce the computation tome drastically. The effect of inflow velocity, submergence depth of the hydrofoil and the shape of circulation distribution on the wave profiles are thoroughly examined. Especially it was possible to investigate the nonlinear influence of the free vortex on the free vortex. The nonlinear free-surface effect on the induced forces on the hydrofoil is also investigated.

  • A numerical simulation on the wake flow of a wind turbine which is a scaled version of a multi-megawatt wind turbine has been performed. Two different inlet conditions of averaged wind speed including one below and one above the rated wind speed were used in the simulation. Steady-state pitch angles of the blade associated with the two averaged wind speeds were imposed for the simulation. The steady state analysis based on the Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes equations with the method of frame motion were used for the simulation to find the torque of the rotor and the wake field behind the wind turbine. The simulation results were compared with the results obtained from the wind tunnel testing. From comparisons, it was found that the simulation results on the turbine power are pretty close to the experimental values. Also, the wake results were relatively close to the experimental results but there existed some discrepancy in the shape of velocity deficit. The reason for the discrepancy is considered due to the steady state solution with the frame motion method used in the simulation. However, the method is considered useful for solutions with much reduced calculation time and reasonably good accuracy compared to the transient analysis.

  • Fire sprinkler initial spray was analyzed by Large eddy simulation (LES) and Volume of Fluid (VoF) integrated method. The IsoAdvector geometric VoF was used to identify the liquid-gas interface clearly even with the large Courant-Friedrichs-Lewy number. To reduce the computational costs, sector meshes and Adaptive Mesh Refinement up to level 3 were used. Base mesh size was 1 mm, which is roughly equivalent to the initial sprinkler droplet. Top surface radius of boss and deflector size were modified to investigate the effects of sprinkler head design on primary breakup process. When top surface radius of boss was increased, vertical liquid sheet was formed. This phenomenon reduced the sheet breakup radius, sheet thickness and velocity. Due to reduced liquid sheet thickness, a large amount of ligaments was created from the liquid sheet. As a result, there was a dramatic decrease in volume per surface area, indicating an increase in breakup process. Spray pattern viewed in radial direction also changed when top surface radius of boss increased. When top surface radius of boss was increased, a T-shaped pattern was observed while a V-shaped pattern was observed in all other cases. When the deflector size increases, the spray pattern remains V-shaped, even if the top surface radius of boss increased. Further studies on promoting atomization of the water supplied to the lower part of the sprinkler head in the T-shape pattern should be conducted.

  • Various studies about metallic bipolar plates have been conducted to improve fuel cell performance through flow field design optimization. These research works have been mainly focused on fuel cells for vehicle, but not fuel cells for building. In order to reduce the price and volume of fuel cell stacks for building, it is necessary to apply a metallic flow field, In this study, for a metallic flow field applied to a fuel cell for building, the effect of a change in the flow field shape on the performance of a polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell was confirmed using a model and experiments with a down-sizing single cell. As a result, the flow field using a metal foam outperforms the channel type flow field because it has higher internal differential pressure and higher reactants velocity in gas diffusion layer, resulting in higher water removal and higher oxygen concentration in the catalyst layer than the channel type flow field. This study is expected to contribute to providing basic data for selecting the optimal flow field for the full stack of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells for buildings.

  • The pressure drop phenomenon that occurs when the same flow rate is supplied to the gas regulator was analyzed. The regulator moves the position of the piston through the interaction of the force acting on the upper and lower parts of the piston and the spring tension to release the pressure of a specific range in a specific environment as constant pressure, thereby maintaining the pressure. The flow characteristics and pressure control process of the regulator were investigated through a numerical analysis technique as the volume of the fluid inside the regulator changed. As the gap between the piston and the piston seat decreased, the pressure drop increased and the flow velocity increased. It was verified through numerical analysis that the piston was positioned at 0.12mm under the same conditions as the pressure-flow test (inlet pressure 3MPa, outlet pressure 0.8MPa, flow rate 70kg/h).
