  • This paper presents a model of a layered, delaminated composite beam. The beam is modelled by beam finite elements, and the delamination is modelled by additional boundary conditions. In the present study, the laminated beam contains only one delaminated region through the thickness direction which extends to the full width of the beam. It is also assumed that the delamination is open. The influence of the delamination length and position upon changes in the bending natural frequencies of the composite laminated cantilever beam is investigated.

  • The magnetic fluid polishing technique can polish the tool of complex shape, because the polishing method which polishes as compress the workpiece by the magnetism abrasives to arrange to the linear according to the line of magnetic force. Therefore, we producted the magnetic fluid polishing device in order that mirror like finishing processes the tool surface. In order to a polishing condition selection, polishing characteristic was estimated by polishing conditions which are magnetic flux density, polishing speed, grain size, magnetic fluid. The tool was polished to the selected polishing condition. The result to evaluate the polished tool's performance with the cutting force and tool wear, the polished tool's performance was improved compared with the tool not to polish.

  • Objective: The aim of the study was to compare the effect of two plant additives, rich in polyphenolic compounds, supplemented to sheep diets on microorganisms and carbohydrate fermentation in rumen. Methods: In the experiment, 6 ewes of the Polish Mountain breed were fitted with ruminal cannulas. Sheep were divided into three feeding groups. The study was performed in a cross-over design of two animals in each group, with three experimental periods (n = 6 per each group). The animals were fed a control diet (CON) or additionally received 3 g of dry and milled lingonberry leaves (VVI) or oak bark (QUE). Additionally, plant material was analyzed for tannins concentration. Results: Regardless of sampling time, QUE diet increased the number of total protozoa, as well as Entodinium spp., Diplodinium spp. and Isotrichidae family, while decreased bacterial mass. In turn, a reduced number of Diplodinium spp. and increased Ophryoscolex spp. population were noted in VVI fed sheep. During whole sampling time (0, 2, 4, and 8 h), the number of protozoa in ruminal fluid of QUE sheep was gradually reduced as opposed to animals receiving CON and VVI diet, where rapid shifts in the protozoa number were observed. Moreover, supplementing sheep with QUE diet increased molar proportions of butyrate and isoacids in ruminal fluid. Unfortunately, none of the tested additives affected gas production. Conclusion: The addition of VVI or QUE in a small dose to sheep diets differently affected rumen microorganisms and fermentation parameters, probably because of various contribution of catechins in tested plant materials. However, it is stated that QUE diet seems to create more favorable conditions for growth and development of ciliates. Nonetheless, the results of the present study showed that VVI and QUE additives could serve as potential natural modulators of microorganism populations and, consequently, carbohydrate digestion in ruminants.

  • Glass fibre reinforced polymers (GFRP) are widely exploited in many industrial branches. Due to this Structural Health Monitoring systems containing embedded fibre optics sensors are applied. One of the problems that can influence on composite element durability is water contamination that can be introduced into material structure during manufacturing. Such inclusion can be a damage origin significantly decreasing mechanical properties of an element. A non-destructive method that can be applied for inspection of an internal structure of elements is THz spectroscopy. It can be used for identifications of material discontinuities that results in changes of absorption, refractive index or scattering of propagating THz waves. The limitations of THz propagation through water makes this technique a promising solution for detection of a water inclusion. The paper presents an application of THz spectroscopy for detection and localisation of a water drop inclusion embedded in a GFRP material between two fibre optics with fibre Bragg grating sensors. The proposed filtering method allowed to determine a 3D shape of the water drop.

  • Recent industrial developments are constantly advancing, and rapid technological development is demanding high technology level in related fields. The need for polishing is increasing even more to improve quality. In order to improve the surface quality, the final finishing process or polishing process is a very important part. Research on super precise polishing method using MR fluid is actively being carried out in domestic and foreign countries. Fine magnetic abrasive grains are aligned in the direction of a magnetic force line formed by a magnetic field and serve as a brush to polish a metal surface. This method has the advantage that the shape of the tool is not fixed and is not affected by the shape of the workpiece or the machining area. We will design the electromagnets for the MR polish polishing system and apply the magnetic field analysis using the magnetic field analysis program (ANSYS). The data obtained through this process suggests an efficient method to increase the magnetic flux density important for polishing. We will investigate the influence of the Al6061-T6 specimen on the surface of the MR polishing machine based on the optimized design.

  • The ultra-precision polishing method using MR fluid has come into the spotlight for polishing metals and optical materials. The MR fluid jet polishing process can be controlled using a change of viscosity by an imposed magnetic field. The MR fluid used for polishing process is a mixture of CI particles, DI water, $Na_2CO_3$ and glycerin. The efficiency of polishing depends on parameters such as polishing time, magnetic field, stand-off distance, pressure, etc. In this paper, the MR fluid jet polishing was used to polish nickel and brass mold materials, which is used to fabricate backlight units for 3-D optical devices in mobile display industries. In MR jet polishing, ferromagnetic materials like nickel can decrease the polishing efficiency by interaction with the cohesiveness of the MR fluid more than non-ferromagnetic materials like copper. A series of tests with different polishing times showed that the surface roughness of brass (Ra=1.84 nm) was lower than that of nickel (Ra=2.31 nm) after polishing for 20 minutes.

  • Fluid jet polishing is a method of jetting a fluid to polish a concave or free-form surface. However, the fluid jet method is difficult to form a stable polishing spot because of the lack of concentration. In order to solve this problem, MR fluid jet polishing system using an abrasive mixed with an MR fluid whose viscosity changes according to the intensity of a magnetic field is under study. MR fluid jet polishing is not easy to formulate for precise optimal conditions and material removal due to numerous fluid compositions and process conditions. Therefore, in this paper, quantitative data on the factors that have significant influence on the machining conditions are presented using various simulations and the correlation studies are conducted. In order to verify applicability of the fabricated MR fluid jet polishing system by nozzle diameter, the flow pattern and velocity distribution of MR fluid and polishing slurry of MR fluid jet polishing were analyzed by flow analysis and shear stress due to magnetic field changes was analyzed. The MR fluid of the MR fluid jet polishing and the flow pattern and velocity distribution of the polishing slurry were analyzed according to the nozzle diameter and the effects of nozzle diameter on the polishing effect were discussed. The analysis showed that the maximum shear stress was 0.45 mm at the diameter of 0.5 mm, 0.73 mm at 1.0 mm, and 1.24 mm at 1.5 mm. The cross-sectional shape is symmetrical and smooth W-shape is generated, which is consistent with typical fluid spray polishing result. Therefore, it was confirmed that the high-quality surface polishing process can be stably performed using the developed system.

  • The aspherical lens was designed to be able to array a focal point. For this reason, it has very curved surface. The aspherical lens is fabricated by injection molding or diamond turning machine. With the aspherical lens, tool marks and surface roughness affect the optical characteristics, such as transmissivity. However, it is difficult to polish free form surface shapes uniformly with conventional methods. Therefore, in this paper, the ultra-precision polishing method with MR fluid was used to polish an aspherical lens with 4-axis position control systems. A Tool path and polishing mechanism were developed to polish the aspherical lens shape. An MR polishing experiment was performed using a generated tool path with a PMMA aspherical lens after the turning process. As a result, surface roughness was improved from $R_a=40.99nm$, $R_{max}=357.1nm$ to $R_a=4.54nm$, $R_{max}=35.72nm$. Finally, the MR polishing system can be applied to the finishing process of fabrication of the aspherical lens.

  • The objective of this study is to develop a reliable method for locating cracks in a beam using data fusion of fractal dimension features of operating deflection shapes. The Katz's fractal dimension curve of an operating deflection shape is used as a basic feature of damage. Like most available damage features, the Katz's fractal dimension curve has a notable limitation in characterizing damage: it is unresponsive to damage near the nodes of structural deformation responses, e.g., operating deflection shapes. To address this limitation, data fusion of Katz's fractal dimension curves of various operating deflection shapes is used to create a sophisticated fractal damage feature, the 'overall Katz's fractal dimension curve'. This overall Katz's fractal dimension curve has the distinctive capability of overcoming the nodal effect of operating deflection shapes so that it maximizes responsiveness to damage and reliability of damage localization. The method is applied to the detection of damage in numerical and experimental cases of cantilever beams with single/multiple cracks, with high-resolution operating deflection shapes acquired by a scanning laser vibrometer. Results show that the overall Katz's fractal dimension curve can locate single/multiple cracks in beams with significantly improved accuracy and reliability in comparison to the existing method. Data fusion of fractal dimension features of operating deflection shapes provides a viable strategy for identifying damage in beam-type structures, with robustness against node effects.
