  • A novel and simple method using a cylindrical penetrometer is being developed for the measurement of yield stress. The principle of this technique is based on the measurement of the static equilibrium of a falling penetrometer in a yield stress fluid. The yield stress is simply determined by a balance of forces acting on the penetrometer. The yield stress of Carbopol gels and $TiO_2$ suspensions has been measured using this method. The results are in reasonable agreement with the values from conventional methods. The effects of the dimensions and weight of the penetrometer have been examined. The long-term behaviour was also observed. No measurable creep was seen and equilibrium was found to be very quickly established. The cylindrical penetrometer technique promises to be a simple, quick and reliable static method for the measurement of yield stress.

  • Hydranencephaly is a rare congenital disease defined as an absence of cerebral hemispheres with an intact thalamus, brain stem, and cerebellum. Generally, patients with hydranencephaly require cerebro-spinal fluid diversion due to progressive hydrocephalus. An excellent view of the choroid plexus and advancement of the neurosurgical endoscope were possible, leading to easy coagulation of the choroid plexus to balance cerebro-spinal fluid production without the use of a shunt device. We present this rare case and good treatment outcome from endoscopic coagulation of the choroid plexus.

  • The electro-hydraulic pump is usually used in testing equipments which require one control function. But until now, it is not applied to industrial equipments which are exposed to severe working environment and require various control functions. This paper proposes a technique which controls continuously flow, pressure and power by utilizing switching control mode. Mathematical model is developed from the continuity equation for the pressurized control volume and the torque balance for the swash plate motion. To simplify the model we make the linear state equation by differentiating the nonlinear model. We analyze the stability and disturbance by using the state variable model. Finally, we review the control performances of flow, pressure and power by tests using PID controller.

  • An inverted pendulum mounted on a cart and actuated by a hydraulic servo cylinder was designed and built. Position information of the cart was acquired via a potentiometer and a angle of the pendulum was sensed by an incremental encoder. These were collected by a DAQ board and processed through the Real-Time Windows Target software(included in simulink). A simulink graphical program was implemented as a controller of the hydraulic system that governed the motion of the cart in order to maintain vertical balance of the inverted pendulum. The purpose of this study is to develop an electro-hydraulic inverted pendulum system for a modeling and controling the intrinsic unstable system. The simulation results were compared with the experimental and verified.

  • A gas-assisted hydraulic breaker uses both hydraulic and pneumatic energies and the appropriate balance between them mostly effects its performance. Mathematical modeling of the breaker is established and verified by experiment. Through sensitivity analysis using AMESim, the key design parameters are selected, which mostly affect the performance of the breaker. Taguchi method is used to optimize the key design parameters to maximize the output power for long and short strokes through simulation. As the result, the output power as well as the impact energy are increased significantly compared with the existing design. The pressure pulsation in the supply line is reduced to a tolerable level and the dynamic characteristics of the piston displacement is also improved by the optimization.

  • Hydraulic systems are widely used as a power transfer and/or power control system due to its flexibility, controllability, accuracy and high power density. Valve controlled and/or pump capacity controlled systems are normally adopted as a control device, but nowadays pump speed controlled systems are emerging as a new energy-efficient hydraulic control system. In this paper the pump speed controlled system for the cylinder position control of a counter balance circuit is investigated by simulation study and position control experiments were carried out. As a result, the possibility and efficiency of the pump speed controlled system were verified.

  • We revisit the arrested Ekman boundary layer problem, using a fully non-linear numerical model with the subgrid dissipation modeled by the large eddy simulation method (LES). The main objective of this study is to find out whether the dynamic balance of the arrested Ekman boundary layer explained by MacCready and Rhines (1991) is valid for high Reynolds number. The model solution indicates that for high Reynolds number and low Richardson number flows, the density anomaly diffusion by near-wall turbulent action may become intense enough to homogenize completely the density structure within the boundary layer, in the direction perpendicular to the sloping wall. Then the buoyancy effect becomes negligible allowing a near-equilibrium Ekman boundary layer flow to persist for a long period.

  • In order to control and balance axial thrust of turbo machine, many types of balancing devices are used but most of them are complicated and sometimes cause troubles. In this study, a very simple device of using shallow grooves mounted on a casing wall, known as "J-Groove", is proposed and studied experimentally and theoretically. The result shows that 70% of axial thrust in an industrial 4-stage centrifugal pump can be reduced at the best efficiency point. Moreover, the analytical method of "interfered gap flow" is established and a simple formula which can determine the optimum dimension of groove and its location is proposed.

  • Rotating flow of a stratified fluid contained in a circular cylinder with unstable temperature gradient imposed on the side wall of it has been numerically studied. The temperatures at the endwall disks are constant. The top disk of the container is coider than that of the bottob disk, as much as the temperature difference n${\Delta}$T, (0${\leq}$n${\leq}$3). Flows in the vessel are driven by an impulsive rotation of the hot bottom disk with respect to the central axis of the cylinder. Flow details have been acquired. For this flow, the principal balance in the interior core is characterized by a relationship between the radial temperature gradient and the vertical shear in the azimuthal velocity. As the buoyancy effect becomes appreciable, larger portions of the meridional fluid transport are long-circuit from the bottom disk to the interior region via the side wall.

  • As functional requirement of massive digital information storage devices are on a trend for the higher data transfer rate and lower cost, many different technical efforts are being tested and implemented in the industry. FDB(Fluid Dynamic Soaring) is one of the major breakthroughs in rotor design in terms of TMR budget. Although FDB analysis based on Reynolds' equation is well established and popularly being used for DB design especially for the estimation of bearing stiffness, there are obvious limitations in the approach due to the inherent assumptions. A generalized analysis tool employing the full Navier-Stokes equation and the energy balance is to be beneficial for detailed FDB design In this publication, an efficient geometry modeling method is presented that provides fully integrated inputs for general FVM/FDM codes. By virtue of the flexibility of the presented method, many different detailed FDB design and analysis are carried over with ease.
