The Characteristics of an Ultrasonic Sprayer by using Piezoelectric Ceramic Resonator (압전 세라믹 진동자를 이용한 초음파 분무기의 분무 특성)

  • The conventional ultrasonic nozzle produces a mist by applying an ultrasonic vibration into a non-flowering liquid. In this paper, we first present a novel designed nozzle type sprayer that is able to apply an ultrasonic vibration directly to the moving liquid and generate a mist instantly. For the novel nozzle, a ring-type actuator of the novel nozzle was designed and built using the PZW-PMN-PZT ceramics. This paper will describe a variety of physical, mechanical, and electrical characteristics of the ultrasonic nozzle. The characteristics of the mist particles was also measured as the amount of the outflow liquid was varied.

  • High expression of osmotically responsive genes1 (HOS1), a key regulator of low temperature response and flowering time, encodes an E3 ubiquitin ligase in Arabidopsis. Here, we report characterization of a newly identified splice variant (HOS1-L) of HOS1. Comparative analyses revealed that HOS1-L has a longer 5' nucleotide sequence than that of the previously identified HOS1 (HOS1-S) and that its protein sequence was more conserved than that of HOS1-S in plants. HOS1-L transcripts were spatio-temporally more abundant than those of HOS1-S. The recovery rate of HOS1-S expression was faster than that of HOS1-L after cold treatment. Diurnal oscillation patterns of HOS1-L revealed that HOS1-L expression was affected by photoperiod. An in vitro pull-down assay revealed that the HOS1-L protein interacted with the ICE1 protein. HOS1-L overexpression caused delayed flowering in wild-type plants. Collectively, these results suggest regulation of HOS1 expression at the post-transcriptional level.

A New Hybrid, Dark Pink Spotted Type Phalaenopsis 'Pink Marble'

  • A new hybrid, Phalaenopsis 'Pink Marble' was made by the National Institute of Horticultural and Herbal Science, Rural Development Administration, in 2005. This hybrid was selected from self-crossed progenies of P. '21-1' (collected number) in 1999. In 2001, one line was selected based on the aspects such as flower color, leaf shape, flower stalk, and vigorous growth. Trials were conducted from 2003 to 2005 for evaluation and selection of this cultivar. 'Pink Marble' had a medium flowering habit and a dark pink spot (RHS, RPN74B) on white petal and sepal when fully opened. The number of flowers on each peduncle was 7.5, and flower diameter was 52.3 cm. The general impression of petals and sepals is a plate shape. The thick sepal could extend the long flowering time. The average length of leaf and peduncle were 16.5 cm and 6.8 cm, respectively. It had a half-erect leaf form, and was a fast-growing cultivar. This hybrid is relatively easy to clone.

Agronomic characters of Korean Adzuki Beans (Vigna angularis (Willd.) Ohwi & Ohashi) (재래종 팥의 작물학적 형질 특성)

  • Agronomic characters of the 361 Korean adzuki beans(Vigna angularis (Willd.) Ohwi & Ohashi) collected in Korea were examined. Korean adzuki beans had predominantly up right growth habit types, followed by the intermediate types (15.3%) and the climbing types (6.9%). Round leaf type was the majority among the collections and followed by elliptical and xiphoid leaf type. Adzuki beans with yellow, light yellow and dark yellow flowers were 89.5%, 9.4% and 1.1%, respectively. The 60.6% of the collections had red seeds and 26.9% had gray seeds. And collections with green seeds, white seeds mixed with gray spot, brown spots on red seeds, black spots on red seeds and dark gray spots on black seeds were also observed. Korean adzuki beans whose number of days from planting to flowering were 69∼75 days were the majority among 361 Korean adzuki beans. The number of days from flowering to majority were 41∼50 days and the number of days from planting to maturity were 111-120days. Adzuki beans having the stem length of 41-60 cm, the pod number per plant of 16-20 and the 100 seed weight of 8∼10 g were 50.2%, 40.2% and 30.5% of collections, respectively.

A New Spray Chrysanthemum Cultivar 'Yes Uri' with Pompon Type and Yellow Color (황색 폼폰형 스프레이국화 'Yes Uri' 육성)

  • A new spray chrysanthemum(Dendranthema grandiflorum Ramat.) cultivar 'Yes Uri' was originated from a cross between 'SP03-033-02' and 'SP03-005-04'. This cultivar was tested on the characteristics from 2005 to 2007 for the evaluation and selection including shading and retarding culture. The natural flowering time of 'Yes Uri' is the late October, but year-round production is possible by shading, lighting and retarding culture. This cultivar was pompon in flower type with a color of bright yellow(RHS 7A), 13.8 flowers per plant and 91.5 cm of plant hight. The diameter of flower was 4.4 cm and the preference was high at 4.14 ranged up to 5.00. The days to flowering under the short day was 8 weeks and plant was very vigorous. It had resistance to white rust and showed 23.6 days of vase life in autumn season.

The Effects of Phosphate to the Growth and Oil Contents in Sesame(Sesamum indicum L.) (참깨의 단경, 분지형에 있어서 인산함량이 함유율과 지상부 생육에 미치는 영향)

  • Effects of phosphorous fertilizer on the growth habit and yield of monoculm and branch types of two leading sesame varieties was investigated. The photosynthetic rate of at each growing stage was high at the flowering stage. The photosynthetic rate of monoculm sesame variety, Pungnyeon was high prior to flowering stage, while the Kwangsan variety, branch type was high after the flowering stage. The level of phosphate were most effective in increasing photosynthesis when standard level of fertilizer was applied in both varieties. Kwangsan variety showed higher photosynthetic rate per unit area, higher NAR, and CGR and higher LAR and RGR at the maximum flowering stage than the Pungnyoeon variety. Those characters attained maximum level when standard levels of phosphorous fertilizer were applied. The protein and oil content of seeds were higher in Kwangsan variety compared with Pungnyeon. However, the carbohydrate of seeds was high for Pungnyeon variety. The highest protein content was attained when standard level of fertilizer were applied. The oil content appeared to increase as the level of applied fertilizer increased. The results suggest that the vegetative growth and seed yields of sesame may be enough with present level of fertilizers. However, higher amount of phosphorous fertilizer may be required to increase the oil content of sesame seeds.

Studies on the Ripening Characteristics, Germination Speed and Quality among Different Floret of Japonica and Tongil Type of Rice under Different Growing Season (수도재배시기별 Japonica 및 Tongil형 품종의 영화간 등숙특성 발아세 및 미질연구)

  • This study was carried out to find out the difference of ripening and growth characteristics among the different florets in same panicle. There were 2 different transplanting date (May 25 and June 10) and 6 varieties were used. Physiological ripening period, ripening speed, 1000 grain weight, germination speed and grain quality were studied among the different florets (1, 5 and 8 days after heading) in same panicle. Physiological ripening period was long in late transplanting, late flowering floret, and late varieties by 3-9 days in Japonica. Ripening speed and 1000 grain weight were high in early transplanting and early flowering florets. There was positive correlation among the ripening speed, 1000 grain weight and a average temperature but negative correlation between the ripening and physiological ripening period. Germination speed was excellent in early flowering floret after heading. There was difference in amylose content within varieties and different flowering grains and there was significant correlation between grain quality and meteorological factors in some varieties.

Effect of Substrates on the Growth and Flowering of Freesia hybrid 'Gold Rich' in Nutrient Culture (프리지아(Freesia hybrida) '골드리치'의 양액재배 시 인공배지별 생육 및 개화특성)

  • This study was conducted to determine the effects of various growth substrates on the growth and flowering of hydroponically grown Freesia hybrid 'Gold Rich'. Perlite, peat moss and a perlite: peat moss mixture (1 : 1 ratio, v / v) were used as the growing media. The greatest plant height before flower bud differentiation was attained using mixed medium compared to the others. The type of medium used did not influence leaf number, mineral content or SPAD value in leaves. Flowering began at 137 days after planting in mixed medium, which was 13 days earlier than in perlite medium. The whole plant fresh weight was 21.3 g heavier in mixed medium than in perlite medium (40.9 g). A similar result was obtained for shoot length, with the highest value (96.6 cm) obtained in mixed medium, i.e., 20 cm higher than in perlite medium (76.6 cm). Floret number per plant was also the highest in mixed medium (14.4), i.e., 1.7 - times higher than in perlite medium. Therefore, among the substrates tested in this experiment, we recommend using mixed perlite: peat moss medium (1 : 1 ratio, v / v) for hydroponic culture of freesia, as the use of this medium improved the physical properties of the plants, producing the best results in terms of plant growth and cut-flower quality.

A Light Pink Freesia 'Pink Ribbon' with Double and Simultaneous Flowering of Many Florets (연분홍색 겹꽃 동시개화성 프리지아 신품종 '핑크리본' 육성)

  • A light pink double freesia (Freesia hybrida Hort.) 'Pink Ribbon' was developed from a cross of breeding a line, 'Pink Jewel' derived 'Michelle' and 'Rossini' and 'Purple Rain' followed by seedling and line selections at the National Institute of Horticultural and Herbal Science (NIHHS), Rural Development Administration (RDA) in 2008. Growth and flowering characteristic tests were conducted from 2004 to 2007. 'Pink Ribbon' has double type flower with light pink color (RHS, RP66C). It has simultaneous flowering of many florets, good flower shape, upright leaves and stalks. The average cut flower yield of 'Purple Rain' observed in the greenhouse from 2005 to 2007 was 7.7 cuttings per plant. It has good production of cormlets, vigorous growth, too. 'Purple Rain' could be cultured under greenhouse conditions in Korea.

The Characteristics of Progenies derived from Lilium lancifolium and Asiatic hybrid "Dreamland" (참나리와 Asiatic hybrid "Dreamland"의 교잡 후대 특성)

  • Lilium lancifolium, which is one of the Korean native lilies, possesses several useful genetic characteristics such as growth vigor, bulbil formation and resistance to Fusarium. Hybridization was performed to insert useful traits of Asiatic hybrid "Dreamland" as the male parent with upward direction and dark brown spotless on the petal into L. lancifolium as the female parent. The rate of pollen germination of L. lancifolium and "Dreamland" were 30% and 60%, respectively. The pollen germination ratio of $F_1$ progenies at flowering date was 25-57%, which is between the parents'pollen germination ratio. The individual flowering time was between 113 days and 131 days after planting. Of 99% of all plants, the leaf shape index was more than five, which means that the leaf shape of $F_1$ plants is more influenced by female than male parent. The flower color was separated into four types. 51.5% of the progenies showed orange and 44.2% showed light orange, respectively. The colors seemed to be highly influenced by female parents. Mixed colors of parents, orange yellow and light yellow orange, were 3.1%, 1.2%, respectively. Flowering directions were segregated by three different ways, upside, side, and downside. Side direction, which is medium type between female and male parent, was 73%. All progenies showed lots of spot on petals except one offspring. The percentage of bulbil formation on leaf axil was 49.4%. Among those, the maximum number of bulbil formation was 25. The mean number of bulbil formation per plant was five.
