  • Three year-old peony (Paeonia. lactiflora Pall. cv. Taebaek) was cultivated in green-house at Jan. 15, Feb. 15, or Mar. 15, respectively. The mean of temperature during the forcing cultivation was higher (air; $1.0{\sim}11.1^{\circ}C$, soil; $1.1{\sim}7.4^{\circ}C$) than that of open-field condition. From sprouting to flowering in peony cultivated at Jan. 15 was about 54 days, which is shorted the cut flower periods (ca. 26 days) compared with the open-field cultivation. However, earlier forcing cultivars were very susceptible to pathogens such as powdery mildew or gray mold. The yield in green house was also lower than in the open-field cultivation. The content of bioactive compounds such as paeoniflorin and albiflorin in green-house cultivars was similar that of open-field cultivars. These results showed the forcing cultivation time of peony at Feb. 15 in green-house was most desirable for commercialization.

  • This experiment was conducted to investigate growth and flowering characteristics of Iris koreana and Iris minutoaurea Makino native to Korea for potting plant of early spring treated by forcing date and temperature. As forcing date delayed from November 1 to December 1, the plant height and number of leaves were increased, however no difference in the number of flower and date of flowering. In Iris koreana, the plant was not flowering in forcing on November 1, flowering 30% on November and 100% on December 1. However all the forcing plant flowered in Iris minutoaurea Makino. As forcing temperature increased from $7^{\circ}C$ to $15^{\circ}C$, the plant height and number of leaves were decreased, however the number of flower in $7^{\circ}C$ was increased and date of flowering was earlier than ones of higher temperature. In Iris koreana, the plant was not flowered in forcing $12^{\circ}C$ and $15^{\circ}C$, all flowered in forcing $7^{\circ}C$. Iris minutoaurea Makino was flowered 30% forcing in $12^{\circ}C$ and all flowered forcing in $7^{\circ}C$.

  • A new spary chrysanthemum (Dendranthema grandiflorum) cultivar 'Eye Ball' was developed from a cross between 'Rima' and 'Yen' followed by selections of seedlings and lines at the Flower Rearch Institute, Gyeongnam Agricultural Research and Extension Services (ARES) from 2002 to 2006. Its characteristics were investigated three times from 2004 to 2006 under forcing culture in spring and retarding culture in autumn. The natural flowering time of 'Eye Ball' was October 20th, but year-round production was possible by shading and lighting. Its flower was 3.1cm in diameter, and had 38.4 petals and 26.8 flowers per stem in autumn. Its petal was narrow (0.4 cm) and pink with green in color at the flower center. To flower in the short day condition, for 'Eye Ball' was about 47 days in spring, and 'Eye Ball' showed a vase life of 20.9 days in autumn. This cultivar was registered for a commercialization in 2007. 'Eye Ball' would be cultured under the greenhouse and rain shelter condition in Korea.

  • The study aimed to identify leaf sheath through the investigation a characteristic of leaf by planting depth and leaf sheath function through the investigation of effect of leaf sheath removals on growth and flowering in forcing of Lilium cultivars. The number of leaf sheath of 'Jolanda', 'Dream Land', 'Casablanca' were 6, 5, 11 in 0cm planting depth and 6, 5, 14 in 6cm planting depth. The number of leaf sheath in 'Jolanda' and 'Dream Land' were little different in according to planting depth. The other hand, the number of leaf sheath in 'Casablanca' were increased 3 when it were planted in 6cm planting depth. As leaf sheath were removed, plant height and stem root growth were decreased in 'Le Reve' and 'Casablanca'. Whereas the growth of basal root and flower number varied among of Lillium and stem diameter, the days of flowering and flower size were little different.
