The flow field of a 1 Ton/Day entrained-flow gasifier constructed in KIER was numerical simulate in this paper. The standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model and simple procedure was used with the Primitive-Variable methods during computation. In order to find the influence factors of the flow field which may have great effects on coal gasification process inside gasifier, difference geometry parameters at various operating conditions were studied by simulation methods. The calculation results show that the basic shape of the flow field is still parabolic even the oxygen gas is injected from the off-axis position. There exist an obvious external recirculation zone with a length less than 1.0m and a small internal recirculation region nears the inlet part. The flow field inside the new gasifier is nearly similar as that of the old 0.5T/D gasifier at same position if the design of burner remains unchanged.
Prediction methods for cavitation noise are presented. At first, direct numerical simulation of cavitating flow noise has been performed, and acoustic analogy equation based on the cavitation noise modeling is derived. For the direct numerical simulation, a density based homogenous equilibrium model is employed to simulate cavitating two-phase flow and the governing equations are solved with high-order numerical schemes to resolve cavitation noise. The compressible Navier-Stokes equations for mixture fluids are discretized with a sixth-order central compact scheme, and the steep gradient of flow variables and supersonic regions are treated with the selective spatial filtering technique. The direct simulation of cavitating flow noise is performed for a 2D circular cylinder at cavitation number 0.7 and 1. The far-field noise is also predicted with the derived analogy equation. Noise spectrum predicted with the equation is well compared with the result of direct numerical simulation and also agree well with the theory.
A new technique for numerical calculation of viscoelastic flow based on the combination of Neural Net-works (NN) and Brownian Dynamics simulation or Stochastic Simulation Technique (SST) is presented in this paper. This method uses a "universal approximator" based on neural network methodology in combination with the kinetic theory of polymeric liquid in which the stress is computed from the molecular configuration rather than from closed form constitutive equations. Thus the new method obviates not only the need for a rheological constitutive equation to describe the fluid (as in the original Calculation Of Non-Newtonian Flows: Finite Elements St Stochastic Simulation Techniques (CONNFFESSIT) idea) but also any kind of finite element-type discretisation of the domain and its boundary for numerical solution of the governing PDE's. As an illustration of the method, the time development of the planar Couette flow is studied for two molecular kinetic models with finite extensibility, namely the Finitely Extensible Nonlinear Elastic (FENE) and FENE-Peterlin (FENE-P) models.P) models.
Recently, the rapid evolution of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) has enabled its key role in industries and predictive sciences. From diverse research disciplines, however, are there strong needs for integrated analytical tools for multi-phenomena beyond simple flow simulation. Based on the concurrent simulation of multi-dynamics, multi-phenomena beyond simple flow simulation. Based on the concurrent simulation of multi-dynamics, multi-physics and multi-scale phenomena, the multi-phenomena CFD technology enables us to perform the flow simulation for integrated and complex systems. From the multi-phenomena CFD analysis, the high-precision analytical and predictive capacity can enhance the fast development of industrial technologies. It is also expected to further enhance the applicability of the simulation technique to medical and bio technology, new and renewable energy, nanotechnology, and scientific computing, among others.
Tidal flow and water quality were simulated in this paper to assess environmental impact caused by pier construction projects in Onsan harbor system. The Surfacewater Modeling System (SMS) was applied to the Onsan harbor system, where coastal reclamation and dredging were planned to build the piers. A finite element mesh was constructed and refined to cover the complicated geometry of the Onsan harbor and the proposed reclamation area. The time variable change of tidal height at harbor inlet was given as an input condition to tidal simulation. The water quality simulation was based on the discharge rate of suspended solids at the reclamation area. The simulation results have shown reasonable agreements with real situations in both tidal flow and water quality. According to the proposed plan, tidal flow and water quality were predicted during and after the pier construction. The tidal simulation study showed that there would be no discernible change of tidal current in the harbor except for the dredged area. The water quality simulation, however, predicted that suspended solids would increase significantly near the reclaimed and dredged areas during construction.
In this paper for simulating spatially and temporally varied moving storm in a watershed a distributed model was developed. The model is conducted by two major flow simulations which overland flow simulation and channel network flow simulation. Two dimensional continuity equation and momentum equation of kinematic approximation are used in the overland flow simulation. On the other hand, in the channel networks simulation two types of governing equations which are one dimensional continuity and momentum equations between two adjacent sections in a channel, and continuity and energy equations at a channel junction are applied. The finite element formulations were used in the overland flow simulation and the implicit finite difference formulations were used in the channel network simulation. The finite element formulations for the overland flow are analyzed by the Gauss elimination method and the finite difference formulations for the channel network flow are analyzed by the double sweep method having advantages of computational speed and reduced computer storages. Several recurrent coefficient equations for channel network simulation are suggested in the paper.
Detached Eddy Simulation (DES) is applied to an axisymmetric base flow at supersonic mainstream. DES is a hybrid approach to modeling turbulence that combines the best features of the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes RANS) and large-eddy simulation (LES) approaches. In the Reynolds-averaged mode, the model is currently based on either the Spalart-Allmaras (S-A) turbulence model. In the large eddy simulation mode, it is based on the Smagorinski subgrid scale model. Accurate predictions of the base flowfield and base pressure are successfully achieved by using the DES methodology with less computational cost than that of pure LES and monotone integrated large-eddy simulation (MILES) approaches. The DES accurately resolves the physics of unsteady turbulent motions, such as shear layer rollup, large-eddy motions in the downstream region, small-eddy motions inside the recirculating region. Comparison of the results shows that it is necessary to resolve approaching boundary layers and free shear-layer velocity profiles from the base edge correctly for the accurate prediction of base flows. The consideration of an empirical constant CDES for a compressible flow analysis may suggest that the optimal value of empirical constant CDES may be larger in the flows with strong compressibility than in incompressible flows.

This study presents the feasibility of CFD(computational fluid dynamic) analysis using the flow angularity wind tunnel test technique. The CFD analyzed data by the flow angularity technique has been constructed as the database to get store trajectories by 6-DOF simulation. The database has been checked out store aerodynamic coefficients by the analyses at each position under wing. After that process, the simulated trajectories by database have been compared with the store trajectories by CTS(Captive Trajectory Simulation) of CFD. The trajectories provided by the database of flow angularity have a good agreement with the store trajectories by CFD.
Flow around Savonius rotor is studied by means of the numerical simulation. Three-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equations are solved numerically. Overgrid system is employed in order to enable the flow calculation of complex geometry. The basic equations in each region are solved by using the standard MAC method. The physical quantities such as the velocity and the pressure among each region are transferred through the overlapping region which is common in each region. Some numerical results of static and rotating rotor will be presented.
