  • The high-pressure die-casting is one of the most effective methods to produce a large amount of products in short cycle time. This process, however, has a problem that the gas porosity defect appears easily. The generation of gas porosity is known mainly due to the air entrapment during the injection stage. Most of numerical simulations for the molten metal flow pattern observations have done in the treating of one phase fluid flow but the gas-liquid interface is essentially multi- phase phenomenon. In this paper, the two-phase fluid flow numerical simulation methods have been adapted to predict the gas porosity generations in the molten metal. The accuracy and the usefulness of the new simulation module have been emphasized and verified through some comparison experiments.

  • The flow characteristics under recirculation cool vent mode is numerically studied using commercial fluid dynamic code(CFX). For the reliable analysis, real vehicle and human FE model is employed in grid generation process. The geometrical location and shape of panel vent, and exhaust vent is set as that of real vehicle model. The flowrate of the working fluid is determined as 330CMH which is equivalent to 70 percent of maximum capacity of HVAC system. The high velocity regions are formed around 4 each panel vent. Because of the non-symmetrically located exhaust, non-uniform flow and partial backflow near the door trim is observed. Streaklines start from each panel vent show the flow pattern of the airflow in the passenger's compartment very well.

  • Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is nowadays a powerful and reliable tool for simulating different flow processes and temperature. CFD is used to analyze the various pot geometries and operative variables in 55% Al-Zn pot of CGL. In this research, different strip velocities were assumed and then shown the flow pattern in the pot that was similar in the different strip velocities. Temperature distribution in the pot depended on inductors and inlet strip temperature at the steady condition. Generation of dross particles and transport models were considered to describe dross particles evolution inside the pot. In order to observe dross influence by scrap location, dross particles were generated upon the sink roll. Floating time of dross particles is different by scraper locations above the sink roll.

  • In this study, with the finite element method we numerically investigate the deformation of liquid drops surrounded by Newtonian or non-Newtonian viscous medium in the axisymmetric contraction flow. 1, 2 or 4 Newtonian or non-Newtonian drops are considered and the truncated power-law model is applied In order to describe non-Newtonian viscous behavior for both fluids. In this type of flow the drop exhibits considerably large deformation, and thus techniques of unstructured mesh generation and auto-remeshing are employed to accurately express the fluid mechanical behavior. We examine the deformation pattern of liquid drops with viscosity dependence different from that of the surrounding medium and also explain their interactions by comparing relative position or speed of drop front.

Performance Evaluation of Ocean Small Hydropower Plant by Analyzing Water Level and Flow Rate of Circulating Water (방류수의 수위 및 유량 분석을 통한 해양 소수력 성능평가)

  • The Samcheonpo ocean small hydropower plant (SHP) has a special feature of using marginal hydraulic head of circulating water system of fossil fuel power plant as a power source and having the characteristics of general hydropower generation and tidal power generation as well. Also, it contributes to reducing green house gases and developing clean energy source by recycling circulating water energy otherwise dissipated into the ocean. The efficiency of small hydropower plant is directly affected by effective head and flow rate of discharged water. Therefore, the efficiency characteristics of ocean hydropower plant are analyzed with the variation of water level and flow rate of discharged water, which is based on the accumulated operation data of the Samcheonpo hydropower plant. After the start of small hydropower plant operation, definite rise of water level was observed. As a result of flow pattern change from free flow to submerged flow, the instability of water surface in overall open channel is increased but it doesn't reach the extent of overflowing channel or having an effect on circulation system. Performance evaluation result shows that the generating power and efficiency of small hydropower exceeds design requirements in all conditions. Analysis results of CWP's water flow rate verify that the amount of flowing water is measured less and the highest efficiency of small hydropower plant is achieved when the effective head has its maximum value. In conclusion, efficiency curve derived from water flow rate considering tidal level shows the best fitting result with design criteria curve and it is verified that overall efficiency of hydropower system is satisfactory.

  • In this study, we presents a simple microfluidic approach for generating uniform Poly(ethylene glycol)(PEG) microfiber. Elongated flow pattern of monomer induced by sheath flow of immiscible oil as continuous phase is generated in Y-shape junction and in situ polymerization by UV exposure. For uniform microfiber, we investigate the optimized flow condition and draw phase diagram as function of Ca and Qd. At the region for stable elongated flow pattern, the microfiber generated in microfluidic chip is very uniform and highly reproducible. Importantly, the thickness of microfibers can be easily controlled by flow rate of continuous and disperse phase. We also demonstrate the feasibility for biological application as encapsulating FITC-BSA in PEG microfiber.

  • Based on the detailed analysis of output characteristics of PV array and residential load usage pattern, a design method to calculate optimal battery capacity for stand-alone PV generation systems is proposed. And also, according to power flow Actual irradiation and temperature data are analyzed to compose a PV array simulator and also six representative home appliances are electrically modeled for load simulator, along with 24hours usage pattern. The surplus and insufficient power can be calculated from the proposed simulation platform, so that selection of an optimal battery capacity can be possible. The theoretical analysis and design process will be explained, along with informative simulation results.

  • Kerosene Burner has widely used in domestic heating appliance. Higher combustion efficiency is required to save fuel and clean exhaust gas. The combustion characteristics in kerosene burner highly depends on the performance of evaporating liquid kerosene. And performance of evaporating effect on generation of tar. In this study, flow and heat transfer of kerosene burner is simulated by FLUENT/UNS using unstructured mesh system and discrete phase model to analyze performance of evaporating kerosene liquid. The simulated results show very complicated flow pattern and back flow at the exit of burner.

  • This study experimented to understand the effect of transporting ice slurry through in pipe with valve. And at this experiment it used ethylene glycol-water solution and a concentration is 30wt%. The experimental apparatus was constructed of ice slurry generation tank, turbo flow meter, manometers for differential pressure measuring, PIV system for flow pattern measuring. illumination and along a horizontal circular tube with valve as test section. The experiments were carried out under various conditions, with velocity of fluid at the entry ranging from 0.5 to 1.5 m/s and concentration of IPF is 30%. Also valve open rate is 50%, 75%, 100%.

Estimation of Freight Trip Generation Rates based on Commodity Flow Survey in Korea

  • In Korea, almost 700 industrial parks are under operation. Generally, industrial parks consist of national industrial parks and local industrial parks which are managed by a central government and by local governments respectively. The developing countries such as Korea, China and Vietnam etc. have constructed many industrial parks, which result in the change of land use pattern and also affect future trip demands. Therefore, in estimating traffic demands, it is very important to consider the industrial park development. This study aims to improve the methodology in estimating a freight trip generation rate with the data based on a nationwide commodity freight survey. The result showed that it is desirable to apply freight trip generation rate by the industry sector in estimating freight trip generations and using the production area of firm as an indicator. Specially, the reliability of the rates through a survey could be made sure because a sample rate based on firms in industrial parks was over 25% and the response rate was over 67%. The sample rate and response rate are very superior as compared to surveys conducted in many other countries. Because industrial parks have significant effects on forecasting transportation demand in pre-feasibility studies of transport and logistics projects, it is expected that the accuracy of freight trip demands would be improved through the results of this study.
