  • Optimal flow-field design of bipolar-plates for a commercial class PEM(polymer electrolyte membrane) fuel cell stack was carried out on the basis of three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics(CFD) simulation. A three-dimensional CFD model originally developed by Shimpalee et al., has been utilized for performing large-scale simulation of a single fuel cell consisting of bipolar-plates gas diffusion layers, and a membrane-electrode-assembly(MEA). The CFD model is able to predict the current density, pressure drops, gas velocities, vapor and liquid water contents, temperature distributions, etc. inside a single fuel cell. Depending on simulation results from the CFD modeling of a PEM fuel cell, several flow-fields of bipolar-plates were designed and verified. The final design of the bipolar-plate has been chosen from the simulations and experimental tests and showed the best performance as expected from the simulation results under a normal operating condition. Thus, the CFD simulation approach to design the optimal flow-field of the bipolar-plates was successful. The final design was adopted as the best flow-field to build a commercial scale PEM fuel cell stack, the performance of which shows about 42% higher than that of the older bipolar-plate design.

  • Developed is a computer program for the prediction of the aero-acoustic performance characteristics such as discharge pressure, efficiency, power and noise level in the basic design step of axial flow fan. The flow field and the aerodynamic performance of fan are analyzed by using the streamline curvature computing scheme with total pressure loss and flow deviation models. Fan noise is assumed to be generated due to the pressure fluctuations induced by wake vortices of fan blades and to radiate via dipole distribution. The vortex-induced fluctuating pressure on blade surface is calculated by combining thin airfoil theory and the predicted flow field data. The predicted aerodynamic performances, sound pressure level and noise directivity patterns of fan by the present computer program are favorably compared with the test data of actual fan. Furthermore, the present computer program is shown to be very useful in optimizing design variables of fan with high efficiency and low noise level and in analyzing their design sensitivities.

  • The technology of AC solenoid valves is now considered as a core technology in the fields of the production line of semi-conductor chips and the micro fluid chips for medical applications. And AC solenoid valves, which operate by compressed air, are characterized by high speed response, great repeatability and that the pressure on the cross sectional area of poppet is kept constant regardless of the fluctuation of the pressure exerted on the ports. In this study, AC solenoid valves that posses the high-speed responsibility and the high rate of flow have designed and analyzed through the law of equivalent magnetic circuit and Finite Element Method (FEM) respectively. In case of poppet, Flow field characteristic was analyzed by the variation of poppet and it was able to display flow field by changing the location of the poppet. Also, we verified possibility of the design through the static and dynamic pressure and the 3D distribution curve of the force by working the front poppet.

  • Micro On-Off valves are currently recognized as the core technology in the fields of the micro fluid chip fur medical applications and production lines of semi-conduct chip. Micro valves that operate by compressed air need the high-speed responsibility, repeatability, the absorbability and the uniform pressure by the poppet. In this study, Micro On-Off valves that posses the high-speed responsibility and the high rate of flow have designed and analyzed through the law of equivalent magnetic circuit and Finite Element Method (FEM) respectively. In case of poppet, Flow field characteristic was analyzed by the variation of poppet and it was able to display flow field by changing the location of the poppet. • The flow field in multiple fluid sphere systems was studied analytically. The expanded zero vorticity cell model based on Kuwabara's theory (1959) was applied and the effects of gas slippage at the collecting surface were considered. Also, the solid sphere system was extended to fluid sphere including the effects of the induced internal circulation inside the liquid droplet spheres or gas bubble systems. As a result, the obtained analytic solution was converged to the existing solutions for flow field around solid and bubble sphere systems with proper boundary conditions. Based on the resolved flow field, the terminal velocity around the collecting fluid spheres was obtained. Subsequently, this study evaluated the most general solution for flow field around the multiple fluid sphere systems. The obtained flow field in multiple fluid sphere could be used as a fundamental consideration of wet scrubber design and devices for removing particles by fluid-fluid interactions.

  • Six sigma methode was applied for optimization of flow field design of a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC). The optimization between number of channel and channel/rib width was suggested in this paper with six sigma method. With the help of six sigma design of experiment (DOE) the number of experiments may be reduced dramatically. The fuel cell channel design optimization with results of these experiments with a 100 $cm^2$ serpentine flow field indicates a optimization data for a given constant operating conditions.

  • Flow and temperature field in reactors are important factors for design of thermal chemical vapor deposition system to grow carbon nanotubes. In this study, effects of the variations of the inlet and outlet areas of the CVD reactor to the flow characteristics and temperature field are numerically analyzed. High temperature of the gas in the entrance region is obtained with slow gas speed resulted from the enlarged inlet area. Variation of the exit area has little effects on the flow field and temperature in the reactor. However the largest area among considered cases gives the highest gas temperature though the differences are small.

  • Cross-flow fans are widely used in various applications, due to their large capacity of mass flow and size compactness. The flow field of the cross-flow fan is, however, complex and has many design parameters. Thus, the general design guide has not been sufficiently established yet and the design strategies of cross-flow fans have been mostly based on experiments. In the present study, the performance and their two-dimensional flow characteristics are numerically analyzed by using the STAR-CD(commercial computational fluid dynamics code). The simulation is done by varying the several design parameters such as the impeller blade shapes and the gap between the stabilizer and impeller. The computational results are compared with the experimental data at the fan outlet region. Finally, some helpful guides for the optimum design of cross-flow fans are proposed.

  • The catalyst layer design is one of the most important factors to enhance the performance of PEMFC(Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell) system. The hydrophobic and ion conductive type is studied for the MEA(Membrane Electrolyte Assembly). It is found that those have some limitations for performance enhancement when they are used separately. Thus, the dual catalyst type, a mixed model, is developed for the better MEA performance. In the meantime, the design of flow field plate is subsequently carried out in order to give more enhanced output during its operation. The conductivity of flow field plate showed better performance in the case of manufactured by the more compressed process(20MPa) than by the less compressed process(10MPa). The micro-structure of the flow field plate is examined in details using SEM(Scanning Electron Microscope) to analyse the effects on the different compression processes.
