  • In this study, shape optimization of micro-static mixer with a cantilever beam was accomplished for mixing the mixing efficiency by using successive response surface approximations. Variables were chosen as the length of cantilever beam and the angle between horizontal and the cantilever beam. Sequential approximate optimization method was used to deal with both highly nonlinear and non-smooth characteristics of flow field in a micro-static mixer. Shape optimization problem of a micro-static mixer can be divided into a series of simple subproblems. Approximation to solve the subproblems was performed by response surface approximation, which does not require the sensitivity analysis. To verify the reliability of approximated objective function and the accuracy of it, ANOVA analysis and variables selection method were implemented, respectively. It was verified that successive response surface approximation worked very well and the mixing efficiency was improved very much comparing with the initial shape of a micro-static mixer.

  • Heat transfer on packed bed is considered to be important for the effective designs of chemical reaction equipment, air conditioning system, and storage type heat exchanger, etc. Currently studies are being carried out quite actively in this field in order to increase the heat transfer efficiency. The effect of heat transfer is closely relater to materials, shapes, porosities and packing states of packed bed as well as mutual dimensional relations between particles and the container. Investigation shows that heat transfer results appear to be influenced by such parameters as fluid velocity through packed bed, mass flow, and thermal properties. It is noted that viscosity is also considered to be an important factor in this problem. In this study, effective thermal conductivities on packed bed, effects of thermal conductivity (Ke) and friction factor (Fk) according to change of porosity(.epsilon.) and Reynolds number(Reh(, and pressure loss of the fluid, are experimentally investigated. Results show that the effective thermal conductivity increases and the friction factor decreased, as against the increase of Reynolds number. But as the increase of porosity increase them both.

  • Automobile sunroof buffeting is the tonal noise of low frequency around 20Hz. It occurs due to the acoustic feedback process between the shear layer detached from the leading edge of sunroof opening and the Helmholtz resonator-like property of a car cabin. In this paper, PIV visualization technique is applied to the unsteady flow field around sunroof opening of an SUV in the full-scale automotive wind tunnel in order to find out buffeting mechanism. A phase-marking PIV measurement method, in which image and sound pressure are recorded simultaneously, and a phase-rearrangement post-processing program were developed for capturing noise-related velocity fields without expensive synchronization systems. Through this study, some characteristics of the real-car sunroof shear layers under various deflector conditions were identified and these results can provide insights into the noise reduction mechanism of the tube-type deflector.

  • In this study, the overall performance and the local flow field of the centrifugal compressor with the refrigerant HFC-l34a were numerically studied using CFX-TASCflow. The thermodynamic and transport properties of the refrigerant gas were modeled by REFPROP which is NIST refrigerant properties database. The impacts of a grid qualify, discretization scheme, turbulent model and interaction between a impeller and a cascade diffuser were analyzed comparatively. The results were compared with experimental data and 1-D design results using COMPAL and agreed well with others. The numerical method and data obtained in this study can be applied to the design and modification of centrifugal compressors with real gases

  • The Characteristics of atmospheric flow and dispersion of air pollutants in the mountainous coastal area were studied using two-dimensional model by the combination of land-sea breezes and transport. The pollutants emitted into the simulated wind field in considering with the mesoscale local circulations. The typical effects of land-sea breezes and tophography of coastal area on the dispersion are discussed in detail, and the model is proved as an useful tool to pridict real time pollutant transport by the results of application studies in Pusan, Korea where the urbanized coastal area with mountainous topography. It was found that sulfur dioxide ($SO_2$) are differently transported and concentrated as going inland by the influence of the sea breeze with topographic changes. Key words : land-sea breezes, sulfur dioxide, dispersion, coastal area.

  • A finite-volume method using multi-block grid technique has been developed in order to investigate the flow field around multi-body. Here the matching grids are used at the interface between blocks and the boundary conditions are imposed there to exchange physical values across the interface. For the test problems, the laminar viscous flaw around one-and two-cylinder are simulated and the results are compared with experiments and other numerical results.

  • The velocity and pressure fields of a ship's propulsion mechanism of the Weis-Fogh type, in which a airfoil moves reciprocally in a channel, are studied in this paper using the advanced vortex method. The airfoil and the channel are approximated by a finite number of source and vortex panels, and the free vortices are introduced from the body surfaces. The viscous diffusion of fluid is represented using the core-spreading model to the discrete vortices. The velocity is calculated on the basis of the generalized Biot-Savart low and the pressure field is calculated from integrating the equation given by the instantaneous velocity and vorticity fields. Two-dimensional unsteady viscose flows of this propulsion mechanism are numerically clarified, and the calculated results agree well with the experimental ones.

  • The goal of this paper is to investigate the generation characteristics of the main impulsive noise sources generated by the supersonic flow discharging from a muzzle. For this, this paper investigates two fundamental mechanisms to sound generation in shocked flows: shock motion and shock deformation. Shock motion is modeled numerically by examining the interaction of a sound wave with a shock. The numerical approach is validated by comparison with results obtained by linear theory for a small disturbance case. Shock deformations are modeled numerically by examining the interaction of a vortex ring with a blast wave. A numerical approach of a dispersion-relation-preserving(DRP) scheme is used to investigate the sound generation and propagation by their interactions in near-field.

  • The method of flame hole dynamics is demonstrated as a mean to simulate turbulent flame extinction. The core of the flame hole dynamics involves derivation of a random walk mapping for the flame holes, created by local quenching, between burning and quenched states provided that the dynamic characteristics of flame edges is known. Then, the random walk mapping is projected to a background turbulent field. The numerical simulations are carried out with further simplifications of flame string and unconditioned scalar dissipation rate. The simulation results show how the chance of partial quenching is influenced by the crossover scalar dissipation rate. Finally, a list of improvements, necessary to achieve more realistic turbulent flame quenching simulation, are discussed.
