The flow rate of various sand through circular orifice can be measured from a knowledge of a few easily measurable properties of the system. These are the orifice column and particle diameters, the angle of inclination of the orifice with the horizontal and an angle of repose of the granular sand material. Straight lines were obtained when the logarithm of the flow rate was plotted versus the logarithm of orfice diameter. No influence of excessive compaction and bed height was observed and the flow rate increased with decrease of particle diameter. The profile of flow developed the edge of the aperture in a way independent of its size. Linear relationship was observed between the angle of inclination of the orifice and the flow rate.
This study presents the theoretical approach for volume concentration, velocity profile, and granular discharge on the fluid-granule mixed flow downstream of the scour hole at the outlet of the hydraulic structure. Concept of dilatant model was applied for the stress-strain relationships of fluid-granule mixed flow since the flow downstream of the scour hole corresponds to debris flow, where momentum transfers through particle collisions. Mathematical formulations were derived using momentum equation and stress-strain relation of the fluid-granule mixture. Velocity profile under the assumption of uniform concentration over flowing layer showed the downward convex type. Deposition angle of downstream hump was found to be a function of an upstream slope angle, a dynamic friction angle and a volume concentration irrespective of flow itself, Granular discharge and the overflow depth were obtained with given values of inflow rates. Experimental results showed relatively good agreements with theoretical ones.

A numerical analysis was performed on the fluid flow in injector orifice of a liquid rocket engine. The present computational code was verified against the published data for turbulent flow in a pipe with a sudden expansion-contraction. Considered were the parameters for the flow analysis in an injector orifice: Reynolds number, ratio of mass flow rate of the injector orifice and inlet flow rate, and slant angle of the injector orifice. The discharge coefficient increased slightly as the Reynolds number increased. The slant angle of the injector changed critically the discharge coefficient. The discharge coefficient increased by 7% when the slant angle changed from $-30^{\circ}$ to $30^{\circ}$ The ratio of mass flow rate had relatively little impact on the discharge coefficient.
Missile and fighter aircraft have been challenged by low restoring nose-down pitching moment at high angle of attach. The consequence of weak nose-down pitching moment can be resulting in a deep stall condition. Especially, the pressure oscillation has a huge effect on noise generation, structure damage, aerodynamic performance and safety, because the flow has strong unsteadiness at high angle of attack. In this paper, the unsteady aerodynamics coefficients were analyzed at high angle of attack up to 50 degrees around two dimensional NACA0012 airfoil. The two dimensional unsteady compressible Navier-Stokes equation with a LES turbulent model was calculated by OHOC (Optimized High-Order Compact) scheme. The flow conditions are Mach number of 0.3 and Reynolds number of $10^5$. The lift, drag, pressure, entropy distribution, etc. are analyzed according to the angle of attack. The results of average lift coefficients are compared with other results according to the angle of attack. From a certain high angle of attack, the strong vortex formed by the leading edge are flowing downstream as like Karman vortex around a circular cylinder. The primary and secondary oscillating frequencies are analyzed by the effects of these unsteady aerodynamic characteristics.

This paper is the first of 2 companion papers which investigate in-cylinder swirl generation characteristics according to inlet valve angle. Two DOHC 4 valve engines, one has wide intake valve angle and the other has narrow valve angle, were used to compare the characteristics of swirl motion generation in the cylinder. One intake port was deactivated to induce swirl flow. A PIV (Particle Image Velocimetry) was applied to measure in-cylinder velocity field according to inlet valve angle during intake stroke. The results show that the stronger swirl motion is observed in wide valve angle engine at the early intake stage; however, the swirl motion is gradually distorted by the intake flow component passing through valve area near the cylinder wall as the stroke proceeds. The tumble motion also does so in wide angle. On the contrary, the swirl and tumble motions, which are not clear at the initial stage, become better and better arranged as the piston goes down and up again after bottom dead center.

A supersonic viscous flow over a five-degree half-angle cone is studied computationally with three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations. Steady asymmetric solutions show that the asymmetric flow separation is caused by convective instability. The effects of angle of attacks, Reynolds numbers, and Mach numbers have been investigated and it is found that those factors affect the generation of the side force. The side force has the maximum value at ${\alpha}=22^{\circ}$, while over ${\alpha}=22^{\circ}$, asymmetric vortex becomes transient, which results in the unsteady shedding. At the angle of attack of 22 degrees, the side force increases with Reynolds number and decreases with Mach number. The increase of the side force stops over the critical Reynolds number for the present configuration.
Recently for the impressive gains of performance and efficiency over vaneless diffuser with apparently little or no loss in flow range, the use of LSVD(Low Solidity Vaned Diffuser) is well recommended. The experiments on the effect of the vane turning angle variation(positive, negative, zero) with other design parameters fixed on the performance and flow range were carried out. Diffuser with zero turning angle has the best characteristics in terms of performance and efficiency and The FFT results show the different frequency characteristics due to the vane turning angle in low flow range.
The vortex flow characteristics of a sharp-edged delta wing at high angles of attack were studied using a computational technique. Three dimensional, compressible Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations were solved to understand the effects of the angle of yaw, angle of attack, and free stream velocity on the development and interaction of vortices and the relationship between suction pressure distributions and vortex flow characteristics. The present computations gave qualitatively reasonable predictions of vortical flows over a delta wing, compared with past wind tunnel measurements. With an increase in the angle of yaw, the symmetry of the pair of leading edge vortices was broken and the vortex strength was decreased on both windward and leeward sides. An increase in the free stream velocity resulted in stronger leading edge vortices with an outboard movement.

Even though the benefit of flight at high angle-of-attack is to be able to reduce the speed of flight and maneuvers in complex flight environment, the flight at high angle-of-attack, however, is easy to be in stall which is characterized by sever unsteady flow separation over an airfoil. Current unsteady numerical analysis using DES was conducted to predict the aerodynamic characteristics of a NACA 0021 airfoil at high angle-of-attack conditions. And this provides the comparison with the steady numerical one with the typical turbulence models. The unsteady calculation by DES is appropriate in terms of predicting the aerodynamic performance of NACA 0021 airfoil at high angle-of-attack conditions.

Natural convection within inclined high aspect-ratio rectangular cavity was analysed by using finite element method. For a cavity of sapect-ratio 20, the flow patterns of secondary vortices and the heat transfer characteristics on the wall were obtained with the variation of tilt angle as well as Ra and Pr. The observation on the governing equations shows that the increase of Ra/Pr and the existence of nonzero tilt angle make the flow pattern more complicated and so it becomes difficult to obtain converging solution. The max. value of Ra/Pr attained in this study was 3x10$\^$4/at 0$\^$0/ tilt angle and 1.1x10$\^$4/ at 45.deg. tilt angle for aspect ratio 20and Pr=0.7. Finally an empirical formula for Nusselt number which can accout for the effect of tilt angle is obtained for laminar flow regime.
