  • The interlayer noise of the apartment house is a typical problem that reduces the quality of the residential environment. Therefore, many researchers have developed soundproofing materials that blocks noise between floors. However, most development technologies do not have the noise cut-off effect felt by residents, and may also have a defect in long-term deflection. In this respect, this study developed high-performance interlayer soundproofing material that can overcome existing problems. The developed technology has the noise reduction effect experienced by the residents and it has high durability without long-term deflection. Therefore, high-performance interlayer soundproofing material is expected to contribute to reducing disputes over noise between floors of apartment residents.

  • Automated manufacturing systems are applied to shop floors as tools for increase of productivity and quality and the decrease of manufacturing lead times and industry accidents. One of the most important issue of the present day is the application of Internet. The development of Internet technologies makes manufacturing enterprises break spacial barriers between users and shop floors, and collect various field data in remote sites. In this research, an Internet-based remote control system for a small-sized automated storage and retrieval system is developed for the purpose of real-time monitoring and control of automatic production equipment. The developed system has a client-server architecture and sends real-time images of the automated storage and retrieval system to clients by an CCD camera connected to a server.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine how the purchasers perceive the effects of the unit characteristics within the complex on the apartment prices. Six major characteristics of the apartments : orientations and floors; views; structures; conditions and maintenances of interior materials; interior alterations; and access to the outdoor facilities were included for the analysis. The data were gathered from 284 households in seven private apartment complexes in Ulsan. It was found that the price of the apartment was higher if it was southward, on the royal or semi-royal floors, with the nice view for the riverside or any other landscape resources, or openness. Other characteristics which increase the price were the hall type not the corridor one, inner side of the building, good conditions of interior materials, and extended balcony.

  • The biomechanical analysis of the load carrying effect on different floor surfaces has been conducted. Four different floor surfaces were prepared for ten subjects with each walking at a fixed velocity(1.33 m/sec) while carrying five different loads. The results showed that because of the significant interaction effect between floor slipperiness and the load carrying task, the load carrying effect should be analyzed according to different levels of the floor slipperiness, especially contaminant floors. On oily surfaces, slip distance(SD) and heel velocity (HV) increased whereas stride length(SL) decreased as load increased. In other words, significantly longer SD, faster HV, and no normal gait were found as load increased. As a result, a different protocol should be applied to measure floor slipperiness on oily floors as compared to dry surfaces for tribological approach.

  • Recently, high story apartments are common to solve a housing problem especially in major cities. Apartments are considered as clean, sanitary and convenient to live. However, There are some problems because residents share walls, floors and ceilings with other people. Thus, the residents are often disturbed by neighbours since sound travels the building elements. Especially, impact noise through the floors causes the many complains. And so, it has been drawn attention to isolate by the impact sound. The purpose of this study is to analyze the characteristics of vibration response of 12-type void slabs in the improved void slab by impedance method, and is to find the best improveds void slab on the 12-type void slabs.

  • The reproducibility of measured level is a prior condition for the reliable assessment of the sound insulation performance. To review the reproducibility of impact sound level, 20 floors were selected in highrise apartment house, and then impact sound levels of two kinds of typical floors were measured with 10 times in each receiving point. The impact sound insulation class values were derived with a standard tapping machine and bang machine. Inspection of the result showed that smaller scale of the room caused to lower the reproducibility and that the higher values of standard deviation in lower frequency caused to deteriorate the reliability of assesment. Thus to enhance the reproducibility of the impact sound insulation class, greater allowable deviation of measured level is required in lower frequency than in higher one.

  • Summary of experiments for the investigation of a fire which caused an upward fire spread for over 12 floors through balconies in a high-rise apartment complex is reported. The experiments include indoor tests to obtain fire properties of vertical PMMA fences and outdoor ones with a full scale model of the balcony. The test results suggest significance of the increase of total flame height by the merging of flames and a cooperative effect of the burning of the PMMA fence and combustibles on the balconies for the generation of a tall flame enough to cause ignition on the upper floors.

  • In this study, the control performances of Tuned Mass Damper (TMD) and Tuned Liquid Column Damper (TLCD) are evaluated and compared for seismically excited structures. Results show that TLCD is more effective than TMD for interstory drift control while TLCD is as effective as TMD for acceleration control. In special, it is shown that interstory drifts are maximally controlled in lower floors and accelerations are reduced most in upper floors. This indicates that TLCD is an effective controller for earthquake-induced structures in terms of structural safety as well as serviceability.

  • While most of researches on system identification of building structures are aimed at finding modal parameters first and identifying the corresponding physical parameters by using the transformation in terms of transfer functions and cross spectra, etc., direct physical parameter system identification methods have been proposed recently. Due to the problem of signal/noise (SN) ratios, the previous methods are restricted mostly to earthquake records or forced vibration data. In this paper, a theoretical investigation is performed on the influence of wind disturbances on stiffness identification of building structures using micro-tremor at limited floors. It is concluded that the influence of wind disturbances on stiffness identification of building structures using micro-tremor at limited floors is restricted in case of using time-series data for low-rise buildings and does not cause serious problems.

  • The aim of this research is to evaluate the effects of the number of spans, height of spans, number of floors, height of floors, column to beam moment of inertia ratio, and plastic joints distance of beams from columns on the ductility of moment frames. For the facility in controlling the ductility of the frames, this paper offers a simple relation instead of complex equations of different codes. For this purpose, 500 analyzed and designed frames were randomly selected, and their ductility was calculated by the use of nonlinear static analysis. The results cleared that the column-to-beam moment of inertia ratio had the highest effect on ductility, and if this relation was more than 2.8, there would be no need for using the complex relations of codes for controlling the ductility of frames. Finally, the ductility of the most frames of this research could be estimated by using the combination of genetic algorithm and artificial neural networks properly.
