The Use of Bracing Systems with MR Dampers in Super Tall Buildings

  • High-rise buildings are increasingly viewed as having both technical and economic advantages, especially in areas of high population density. Increasingly taller buildings are being built worldwide. Increased heights entail increasing flexibility, which can result in serviceability problems associated with significant displacements and accelerations at higher floors. The purpose of this paper is to present the concept of a versatile vibration control technology (MR dampers with bracings) that can be used in super tall buildings. The proposed technology is shown to be effective, from a serviceability point of view, as well as resulting in dramatically reduced design wind loads, thus creating more resilient and sustainable buildings.

  • The safety concern of slipping on floors in South Korea has come to the fore as a social problem, but the occurrence of such accidents has not decreased. Slip and fall accidents have several causes, but they are especially common when there is soapy water on the floor during a shower or a bath. Despite this situation, it can be said that there is a lack of standards on surface contamination materials used in floor slip resistance testing. Therefore, in this study, we conducted a survey to identify the components and quantity of soapy water that actually results from a user taking a shower, and the standardization of contamination materials. Based on the results of this experiment, we provide a surface contamination material that can replace the soapy water used in floor slip resistance testing.

Challenges in Structural Design of Bumeo W-project

  • W-Project is 60-story mixed-use residential building complex project in Daegu, the third biggest city in South Korea. There are lots explorable items to be solved to secure structural safety and meet the serviceability requirements. This paper describes what kind of structural system is optimized based on the architectural requirements and structural components design and the grade of concrete strength altered on floors. The defining process of lateral resisting system of outrigger compared to the core ratio of typical plan is illustrated in detail.

  • This paper evaluates the effectiveness of three nonlinear static methods for the prediction of the dynamic response of in-plan irregular buildings. The methods considered are the method suggested in Eurocode 8, a method previously proposed by some of the authors and based on corrective eccentricities and a new method in which two pushover analyses are considered, one with lateral forces applied to the centres of mass of the floors and the other with only translational response. The numerical analyses are carried out on a set of refined models of reinforced concrete framed buildings. The response predicted by the nonlinear static analyses is compared to that provided by nonlinear dynamic analyses. The effectiveness of the nonlinear static methods is evaluated in terms of absolute and interstorey displacements.

Simulation of the Kitchen and Bathroom Exhaust Systems in High-Rise Apartment Buildings (고층 아파트의 주방 및 욕실 배기 시스템 시뮬레이션)

  • The objective of this study is to find major variables which influence the performance of kitchen and bathroom exhaust systems in high-rise apartment buildings. For this purpose, the influencing factors on the exhaust airflow rates from the kitchen or bathroom are identified and in every cases, which are made of combinations between the influencing factors, the exhaust airflow rates are calculated through the simulations. The results of the simulation show that the exhaust airflow rates from the kitchen and bathroom mainly depends on outdoor air temperature, number of floors, airtightness of the building envelope, fan on ratio, vertically connected to same shaft, exhaust fan capacity for kitchen or bathroom, roof ventilator capacity and shaft area for kitchen or bathroom exhaust.

  • The purposes of this study were to compare and analyze application cases of POP(Point of Purchase) in each ISM(In Store Merchandising) for domestic and imported cosmetics. to present basic data for setting up effective marketing strategies according to types of ISM. The results were as follows : 1. In the Department Stores, counselling comers for customers were located at all domestic and imported cosmetics. A small quantify of new release cosmetic items were displayed in order to elevate those added value in most cosmetics floors excepts Estee Lauder. 2. In the Discount Stores, most cosmetic items were displayed in category or in color for customers to choose those easily. 3. In the Cosmetics Specialties. display for show case couldn't be accessible by customers and cosmetic items were disordered because too many itmes from various companies were displayed

  • The manufacturing equipment on most shop floors consists of numerical control machines, and the condition of each piece of equipment is monitored and controlled by an internal sensor or programmable logic controller (PLC). To control and monitor production lines that consist of an equipment or production module, a separate control and monitoring system such as a manufacturing execution system should be introduced. However, there is no standardized system, and it is costly and difficult to build a system for small or medium-sized plants. In this paper, a PLC-based supervisory system for operation control of a group of production machines is proposed, and the developed PLC-based system is evaluated by applying it to a computer numerical control machine.

Variations of Concentration Levels of Volatile Organic Compounds in the Indoor Air due to Floor Waxing (왁스 청소에 기인한 실내 공기 중 휘발성 유기화합물의 농도변화)

  • Wax is a protectant for floors that is used widely in Korea and is considered an emission source of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the indoor environment. This study examined the concentration change of indoor VOCs due to waxing and also due to wiping the floor with an oiled dustcloth. VOCs were identified using a cryogenic concentration/thermal desorption system with capillary GC that utilized a liquid nitrogen cryostat and induction heating. The major components emitted from the waxing were nonane, decane, undecane, $C_2$-benzene, and $C_3$-benzene. The concentrations of nonane were 1,276 $\mu\textrm{g}$/㎥ an hour after wax applications, 832 $\mu\textrm{g}$/㎥ after 3 days, and less than 10$\mu\textrm{g}$/㎥) after 15 days. Another emission source of VOCs in indoor was the oiled dustcloth used for cleaning the floor. The oiled dustcloth gave VOCs concentrations three times higher than the normal undusted floor.

  • The aim of this study is to suggest the method of measuring the dynamic stiffness and loss factor of materials used under floating floors in the dwelling by korea standard (KS F 2868). According to the results, the amplitude change of an impact source have no effect on the variation of the dynamic stiffness and loss factor. Comparing with the heating before, heating makes lower the dynamic stiffness except the EPS. In EVA material, the loss factor is increased by heating.

  • Resilient materials are generally used for the floating floors to reduce the floor impact sound. Dynamic stiffness of resilient material, which has the most to do with the floor impact sound reduction. The resilient materials available in Korea include EPS (Styrofoam), recycled urethane types, EVA (Ethylene Vinylacetate) foam rubber, foam PE (Polyethylene), glass fiber & rock wool, recycled tire, foam polypropylene, compressed polyester, and other synthetic materials. In this study, we tested floor impact sound reduction characteristic to a lot of kinds of resilient material. The result of test showed that the amount of the heavy-weight impact sound reduction appeared by being influenced from this dynamic stiffness of resilient material. The dynamic stiffness looked like between other resilient materials, a similar to the amount of the heavy-weight impact sound reduction was shown.
