The elastic analysis of floor slabs using the p-version of finite element method encounters stress singularities at certain types of reentrant corners, openings and cut-outs. Results obtained using the computer code based on C.deg. - hierarchic plate element formulated by Reissner-Mindlin theory are compared with theoretical predictions and with computational results reported in the literature. The convergence rate of h-, p- and hp-version can be estimated on the basis of the energy norm in global sense. If accuracy in terms of the number of degree-of-freedom is used as a criterion, the solutions presented here are the most efficient that have been published up to date. Examples are the rhombic plate with the obtuse angle of 150.deg. and the square plate with cut-outs.
Modern earthquake-resistant design aims to isolate architectural precast concrete panels from the structural system so as to reduce the interaction with the supporting structure and hence minimize damage. The present study seeks to maximize the cladding-structure interaction by developing an energy-dissipating cladding system (EDCS) that is capable of functioning both as a structural brace, as well as a source of energy dissipation. The EDCS is designed to provide added stiffness and damping to buildings with steel moment resisting frames with the goal of favorably modifying the building response to earthquake-induced forces without demanding any inelastic action and ductility from the basic lateral force resisting system. Because many modern building facades typically have continuous and large openings on top of the precast cladding panels at each floor level for window system, the present study focuses on spandrel type precast concrete cladding panel. The preliminary design of the EDCS was based on existing guidelines and research data on architectural precast concrete cladding and supplemental energy dissipation devices. For the component-level study, the preliminary design was validated and further refined based on the results of nonlinear finite element analyses. The stiffness and strength characteristics of the EDCS were established from a series of nonlinear finite element analyses and are discussed in detail in this paper.
The behavior of shear-wall dominant, low-rise, multistory reinforced concrete building structures is investigated. Because there are no beams or columns and the slab and wall thicknesses are approximately equal, available codes give little information relative to design for gravity and lateral loads. Items which effect the analysis of shear-wall dominant building structures, i.e., material nonlinearity including rotating crack capability, 3-D behavior, slab-wall interaction, floor flexibilities, stress concentrations around openings, the location and the amount of main discrete reinforcement are investigated. For this purpose 2 and 5 story building structures are modelled. To see the importance of 3-D modelling, the same structures are modelled by both 2-D and 3-D models. Loads are applied first the vertical then lateral loads which are static equivalent earthquake loads. The 3-D models of the structures are loaded in both in the longitudinal and transverse directions. A nonlinear isoparametric plate element with arbitrarily places edge nodes is adapted in order to consider the amount and location of the main reinforcement. Finally the importance of 3-D effects including the T-C coupling between walls are indicated.
The mock-ups of ventilation system, which has been widely adopted for the bathroom with the area of 100 $m^2$ apartment housing, were established and tested to design mechanical ventilation for apartment housing bathroom where air supply exhaust are relatively important. These ventilation mock-ups were capable of controlling intake and exhaust, which has the size of supply openings as 40cm${\times}$1cm, 40cm${\times}$3cm, 40cm${\times}$5cm. They were established at five locations, spaced 40cm from each other at a height of 25cm from the floor. The exhaust fans were located at four corners and center of the ceiling. The results this ventilation effect measurement by different condition are showing that when the size of air supply is bigger and the location is lower, the effect of ventilation was relatively higher. In addition, as the distance between exhaust fan and air supply was farther, the ventilation effect were getting highly efficient.
In cold season, the elevator systems in super high-rise buildings would make noises at the door-gaps on high floors, and the elevator doors on the 1st floor would suffer from opening/closing trouble due to the pressure differences. Such pressure differences are also the main driving power of smokes through the hoistway in the case of fire. In addition, the pressure differences should be overcome to use the elevator systems as a measure of emergency escape. This paper reviews the way of hoistway pressurization to reduce the adverse influences. Simulations achieved a good result close to the requirements of NFPA 92A and IBC 2012 under the condition that the hoistway should be pressurized after pressure equalizing between floors and hoistway with the openings through the hoistway wall.
An experiment was conducted to study incidences of heat loss in greenhouse in Gyeongnam province using thermal imaging camera in order to determine ways minimizing greenhouse heat loss. Measurements of this work showed that temperature differences between two experiment zones before and after installation of thermal curtains were about $2.0{\sim}3.0^{\circ}C$ and $1.0{\sim}2.0^{\circ}C$ respectively. There was a high correlation between the temperature data measured using a thermal imaging camera and a temperature sensor. There was no serious difference among areas, but between places on the first and second floor with thermal curtains for heat insulation, there was a relatively larger heat loss on the first floor than the second floor. Then in general the greenhouse types had no particular bearing on this matter, there was a relatively large heat loss in the parts of side wall window, the gaps and the parts folded of horizontal thermal curtains, the gutter parts, and the gaps of thermal curtain in the side wall window and facade back side for heat insulation, aren't completely sealed. It was found that there was a substantial heat loss due to infiltration through cracks on covering material, doors, ventilating openings, roof gables and floors, in particular.

In general, shear walls are employed as lateral resistance system. Most of shear wall structures require openings in shear walls and thus shear walls are linked by floor slabs or coupling beams resulting in the coupled shear wall structures. In this study, an LRB (lead rubber bearing) was introduced in the middle of the coupling beam of the coupled shear wall structures and the wind-induced response reduction effect of this system was investigated. In order to evaluate the control performance of the proposed method, 20- and 30-story building structures were used as example structures and boundary nonlinear time history analyses have been performed using artificial wind excitation. Japanese vibration evaluation criteria was employed to evaluate whether the proposed system could improve the serviceability of the tall coupled shear wall structures under wind excitation. Based on analytical results, it has been shown that the proposed method that connects shear walls with LRBs can improve the wind-induced response control effect.
The interaction between the surface radiation and the mixed convection transport from an isolated thermal source, with a uniform surface heat flux input and located in a rectangular enclosure, is stuied numerically. The enclosure simulates a practical system such an air cooled electric device, where an air-stream flows through the openings on the two vertical walls. The heat source represents an electric component located in such an enclosure. The size of this cavity is $0.1[m]{\times}0.1[m]$. The inlet velocity is assumed as 0.07[m/s] and the inlet temperature is maintained as $27^{\circ}C$. The inflow is kept at a fixed position. Laminar, two dimensional flow is assumed, and the problem lies in the mixed convection regime, governed by buoyancy force and surface readiation. The significant variables include the location of the out-flow opening, of the heat source and the wall emissivity. The basic nature of the resulting interaction betwwn the externally induced air stream and the buoyancy-driven flow generated by the source is investigated. As a result, the best location of the heat source to make the active heat transfer is 0.075[m] from the left wall on the floor. The trends observed are also discussed in terms of heat removal from practical systems such as electric circuitry.

Most of shear wall structures require openings in shear walls and thus shear walls are linked by floor slabs or coupling beams resulting in the coupled shear wall structures. When these structures are subjected to seismic excitations, excessive shear forces are induced in coupling beams. Accordingly, brittle failure of coupling beams may occur or shear walls may yield first. To avoid this problem, damping devices can be installed in coupling beams. It can increase the vibration control effect and improve the seismic resistance performance of the coupled shear wall structure by avoiding stress concentration and the brittle failure of coupling beams. Based on this background research, an LRB (lead rubber bearing) was introduced in the middle of the coupling beam in this study and the authors investigated the seismic response control effect and stress distribution of the proposed system. To this end, a modeling technique that can effectively predict the structural behavior of coupled shear wall structures has been proposed. With this proposed technique, time history analyses of the example coupled shear wall structure subjected to seismic excitation were performed and the vibration control effects of the seismic responses were investigated.
