  • CPAM has been applied to the paper industry for the purpose of wet-end improvement for a long time. And molecular weight and charge density have been managed most important quality factors to make CPAM for this application. Recently branched CPAM was developed to improve retention and drainage characteristics and we considered branch degree of CPAM as important factor as molecular weight and charge density. In this experiment, we tried to investigate physical and chemical properties to determine branch degree and flocculation efficiency using Arbocell pulp which was recently developed micro size pulp and finally we applied retention and drainage test under the ONP stock condition.

  • The equilibrium dsorption of starch on activated alumina and kaolin was studied to provide the fundamental data for investigating the effect of polymer adsorption on the flocculation of solid particles. The new polymer adsor-ption model(PAH-FH) predicting the adsorption equilibria of polymers on the solid surface has been developed using the solution theory and the concepts of Gibbs dividing surface in conjunction with the Flory-Huggins eq-uation and the adsorption behaviors of polymers were examined by this model The accurate adsorption equilibrium data of starch on alumina and kaolin were determined within the tempera-ture range of 298-318K by the ignition loss method. Using these experimenta data the model developed in this study was evaluated. It was shown that this model could predict the adsorption isotherm more accura-tely than the Langmuir model as well as could describe the characteristics of the adsorption equilibria through model parameters.

  • The large particles of suspended matter in raw water can be removed by allowing them to settle out in a presedimentation basin. But there are smaller particles in almost all surface water and some groundwater that will not settle out within a reasonable time without some help to accelerate the process, In the coagulation and flocculation processes, nonsettleable solids are converted into large and heavier settleable solids by physical-chemical changes broght about by adding and mixing coagulant chemicals into the raw water. The object of this research was to improve corrective injection method for low dissolution liquid in the water treatment plant. A sort of chemical feed equipment are diaphram pump, flow control in combined magnetic flowmeter md control valve, roto dipper wheel system and tube pump. Particularly low dissolution liquid (Calcium Hydroxide) put in a bit by feed equipment, tube pump is very useful method for corrective injection method in the water treatment plant.

  • In this study, low cost bio-flocculants, chitosan, cationic starch and Mg-sericite, were used as a flocculant to harvest freshwater microalgae, Chlorella vulgaris. Chitosan, cationic starch and Mg-sericite separated successfully >98% of C. vulgaris at following optimal parameters: 90 mg/L chitosan at pH 6-7, 70 mg/L cationic starch at pH 9-10 and 50 mg/L Mg-sericite at pH 4-5. A relatively high correlation coefficient (R2) of 0.9993 for chitosan, 0.9971 for catonic starch and 0.9924 for Mg-sericite was obtained. The investigated flocculants amount increased linearly with increasing the microalgae amount. The biopolymer, Mg-sericite, was more effective than that of other investigated flocculants. These results indicated that a bio-flocculants, chitosan, cationic starch and Mg-sericite, could prove to be an effective flocculant for economical production of microalgae biomass. In addition, Mg-sericite was more effective comparing to the other investigated flocculants.

  • In this experimental study, it is concerned to develop a simple equation using jar-test results in order to predict the optimum dosage of coagulant, PAC(polyaluminum chloride). Considering the relationships with the reactions of coagulation and flocculation, the four independent variables (e.g. turbidity, temperature, pH and alkalinity) are selected out of many parameters and they are put into calculations to develop an equation by means of multi-regression method. As the result, the dosing rate of PAC is proportional to turbidity, pH and alkalinity, but in inverse to temperature. And the developed equation is as follow, $$D_c=\frac{3.2{\cdot}T^{0.37}{\cdot}A^{0.04}{\cdot}P^{0.5}}{t^{0.1}},\;(R^2=0.9443)$$ And also, comparing between the estimated value from the equation and the real dosing rate in the plant, Kwangam and Tdukdo, during 1988~1991, it is represented an agreement having a relative error of 16.4%, 17.8%, respectively.

  • In this study, Mg-Sericite was used as a flocculant to harvest freshwater microalgae, Chlorella. vulgaris. Mg-Sericite separated successfully >95% of the C. vulgaris at the following optimal parameters: Mg/Si mol ratio 1.25 to 1.50, mixing time of 20 min and settling time of 20 min. The harvesting efficiency was pH dependent. The highest harvesting efficiency ($99{\pm}0.3%$) was obtained at Mg/Si mol ratio 1.5 and pH 9 to 11. These results indicated that a biopolymer, Mg-Sericite, can be a promising flocculant due to its high efficiency, low dose requirements, short mixing and settling times. This harvesting method is helpful to lower the production cost of algae for biodiesel.

  • Today's paper industry tries to use greater amount of high yield pulp and recycled fiber and to close mill water system, which results in higher fines content and buildup of organic and inorganic contaminants in white water system. Researches are being focused to develop chemical additives that provide good retention and drainage in a closed papermaking system. A microparticle retention system consisted of cationic guar gum and anionic colloidal silica so has been developed to meet the requirements for improving machine speed and product quality. The objective of this investigation was to determine the effects of the degree of cationic guar gums, charge density and structure of anionic colloidal silica sols, and the degree of system closure on the performances of this microparticle retention system. Cationic guar gums and anionic colloidal silica sols with higher charge densities showed better retention performance. Particularly, wider maximum in retention was obtained when structure colloidal silica was used suggesting as mechanism of microparticle bridging is functioning in this system.

  • The application of flexo printed ONP and OCC leads to brightness decrease of deinked stock in ONP recycling system. The largest problems are due to accumulation of flexo ink & introduction of brown fibers. All these are emphasized by variations in the amount of flexo printed ONP and OCC in recovered ONP stock. Most of the brightness problems caused by flexo ink can be helped and solved by applying a proper polyelectrolytes as coagulation agent and flocculation agent. This requires exact evaluation of sedimentation or dissolved air flotation potentials of flexo ink and polyelectrolytes. Effect of bleaching chemical (H2O2) addition level on the increase of brightness of OCC included stock has been investigated by lab scale test.

  • The efficiency of retention systems including compozil-G, hydrocol, compozil-S, and micropolymer under highly closed papermaking system was evaluated using contaminated white waters prepared in the laboratory. Compozil-G and compozil-S performed better in retention than hydrocol and micropolymer systems. This suggested that stronger hydrogen bonding between fiber and guar gum or starch was formed to give stronger flocculation and better retention. Especially compozil-G outperformed compozil-S in retention, and this indicated the presence of stronger interaction between guar and cellulose fibers probably due to their similarity in chemical structure. Two compozil retention systems decreased the cationic demand and COD more effectively than hydrocol and microparticle systems. In particular, compozil-G that uses guar gum was highly effective in decreasing anionic trashes at low dosage.

  • Fluoridation of drinking water to a level of about 0.8mg/l (below 1.5mg/l) for reducing the incidence of tooth decay is recommended. However, concerns about potential problems of unknown effects and overdosing hinders the fluoridation. This study describes the work performed to obtain information on the behavior of fluoride under various conditions in the process of water fluoridation. Effects of water treatment chemicals, water treatment unit, and water distribution on water fluoridation were investigated at both lab and an actual water treatment plant. Residual fluoride concentration was not affected by lime and chlorine dosage up to 20mg/l. Flocculation with PAC slightly decreased the residual fluoride concentration as PAC dosage increased. Average fluoride concentration of 0.87mg/l at an intake basin was decreased to 0.83mg/l by sedimentation, 0.81mg/l by dual media(sand+anthracite) filtration, and 0.79mg/l by granular activated carbon filtration in the water treatment plant.
