  • HPFRCCs (high-performance fiber reinforced cementitious composites), which is relatively more ductile and has the characteristic of high toughness with high fiber volume fractions, can be used in structures subjected to extreme loads and exposed to durability problems. In the case of PVA (polyvinyl alcohol) fiber, it is noted by former studies that around 2% fiber volume fractions contributes to the most effective performance at HPFRCCs. In this study, flexural tests were carried out to evaluate the flexural behavior of HPFRCCs and to optimize mix proportions. Two sets of hybrid fiber reinforced high performance specimens with total fiber volume fraction of 2 % were tested: the first set prepared by addition of short and long PVA fibers at different combination of fiber volume fractions, and the second set by addition of steel. In addition, in order to assess the performances of the HPFRCCs against to high strain rates, drop weight tests were conducted. Lastly, the sprayed FRP was applied on the bottom surface of specimens to compare their impact responses with non-reinforcing specimens. The experimental results showed that the specimen prepared with 1.6% short fibers (REC 15) and 0.4% long fiber (RF4000) outperformed the other specimens under flexure, and impact loading.

  • The prestressing steel wire, which is applied a tension to reinforce the structure, is applied flexure simultaneously by the duct and the deviator. In order to evaluate the deflected tensile performance of the prestressing steel wire subjected to both tensile and flexural stresses, the numerical analysis for 600 cases with variables of wire diameters, mandrel diameters, and friction coefficient between mandrel and steel wire was performed. As the result of analysis, the larger the diameter of the steel wire was, the lower the deflected tensile performance was, and the effect decreased with the increase of the wire elongation. The effect of mandrel diameter and friction coefficient between mandrel and wire on the deflected tensile performance of the wire was very small. But the deflected tensile performance and the friction coefficient between mandrel and strand showed a relatively high correlation. Therefore, it is necessary to make enough large elongation to secure the deflected tensile performance. If there is a restriction on the elongation, it is necessary to reduce the diameter of the steel wire to an appropriate value, and to increase the friction between steel wires by adjusting the surface condition of the steel wire.

  • As a new type of ballastless track, longitudinal continuous slab track (CST) has been widely used in China. It can partly isolate the interaction between the ballastless track and the bridge and thus the rail expansion device would be unnecessary. Compared with the traditional track, CST is composed of multi layers of continuous structures and various connecting components. In order to investigate the performance of CST on a long-span bridge, the spatial finite element model considering each layer of the CST structure, connecting components, bridge, and subgrade is established and verified according to the theory of beam-rail interaction. The nonlinear resistance of materials between multilayer track structures is measured by experiments, while the temperature gradients of the bridge and CST are based on the long-term measured data. This study compares the force distribution rules of ballasted track and CST as respectively applied to a long span bridge. The effects of different damage conditions on CST structures are also discussed. The results show that the additional rail stress is small and the CST structure has a high safety factor under the measured temperature load. The rail expansion device can be cancelled when CST is adopted on the long span bridge. Beam end rotation caused by temperature gradient and vertical load will have a significant effect on the rail stress of CST. The additional flexure stress should be considered with the additional expansion stress simultaneously when the rail stress of CST requires to be checked. Both the maximum sliding friction coefficient of sliding layer and cracking condition of concrete plate should be considered to decide the arrangement of connecting components and the ultimate expansion span of the bridge when adopting CST.

  • The objective of this work is to design Surface Antenna Structure (SAS) and investigate fatigue behavior of SAS that is asymmetric sandwich structure. This term, SAS, indicates that structural surface becomes antenna. Constituent materials are selected considering electrical properties, dielectric constant and tangent loss as well as mechanical properties. For the antenna performance, SSSFIP elements inserted into structural layers were designed fur satellite communication at a resonant frequency of 12.5 GHz and final demonstration article was $16{\;}{\tiems}{\;}8$ array antenna. From electrical measurements, it was shown that antenna performances were in good agreement with design requirements. In cyclic 4-point bending, flexure behavior was investigated by static and fatigue test. Fatigue life curve of SAS was obtained. The fatigue load was determined experimentally at a 0.75 (1.875kN) load level, Experimental results were compared with single load level fatigue life prediction equations (SFLPE) and in good agreement with SFLPE. SAS concept is the first serious attempt at integration fur both antenna and composite engineers and promises innovative future communication technology.

  • Traditional nonlinear static and dynamic analyses do not accurately estimate the energy dissipation capacity of reinforced concrete structure. Recently, simple equations which can accurately calculate the energy dissipation capacity of flexure-dominated RC members, were developed in the companion study. In the present study, nonlinear static and dynamic analytical methods improved using the energy-evaluation method were developed. For nonlinear static analysis, the Capacity Spectrum Method was improved by using the energy-spectrum curve newly developed. For nonlinear dynamic analysis, a simplified energy-based cyclic model of reinforced concrete member was developed. Unlike the existing cyclic models which are the stiffness-based models, the proposed cyclic model can accurately estimate the energy dissipating during complete load-cycles. The procedure of the proposed methods was established and the computer program incorporating the analytical method was developed. The proposed analytical methods can estimate accurately the energy dissipation capacity varying with the design parameters such as shape of cross-section, reinforcement ratio and arrangement, and can address the effect of the energy dissipation capacity on the structural performance under earthquake load.

  • The finite element analysis for optimizing a mirror system consisting of a large-diameter mirror and flexures requires numerous, repetitive calculations and corrections of the actual model to satisfy the given design conditions. In general, modification of this real model is conducted by reconfiguring nodes of the elements. The reconfiguration is very time-consuming work, to fix the continuity of each of the newly formed component nodes at the interfaces. But the process is a very important factor in determining the analysis time. To save time in modeling and actual computation, and to attain faster convergence, we present a new opto-mechanical analysis using non-shared node connections at each of the interfaces of the optical components. By comparing the results between the new element model and a conventional element model with shared node connections, we found that the opto-mechanical performance was almost the same, but the time to reach the given condition was drastically reduced.

  • Steel concentrically braced frame is an efficient system that can acquire resistance against the lateral force of buildings with the least amount of quantity. In this study is intended to proceed on the research of schemes for reinforcement by supplementing previously installed H-formed brace with non-welded cold-formed plastic stiffening materials restricting the flexure and buckling and acquire a consistent strength on the tensile and compressive force. As for the measures of supplementing previously-installed inverted V-formed braced frame, stiffening materials in the previous studies were converted to weak-axial supplementing materials to suggest a specific scheme evaluating the structural function through an experiment of members, interpretation of members, and frame-focused experiment. Reinforced brace satisfied the requirement to be prevent AISC brace from being ruptured due to imbalanced strength in the beam.

  • The objective of the study in this paper was to develop a beam-column element to model members with purely flexural yielding, as well as members with yielding under combined flexure and axial force during severe earthquake ground motins. The developed element can be considered as an one-component series hinge type model. It has the capability to model plastic axial deformation and changes in axial stiffness, and employs hardening rules to handle monotonic, cyclic or arbitrary loading. In general, when compared to experimental results and fiber model predictions, the element showed significantly better performance than the bilinear hinger model and could properly model the beam-column behavior of bare steel members in moment resisting frames. The developed element can more accurately predict local deformation demands and overall responses of structural systems under earthquake loadings than the bilinear hinge element.

  • Recently, high performance steels have been utilized to structural materials in buildings and bridges with the demand for high-rise and long-span of main structures. In this paper, flexure-compression members with the high-strength steel were experimentally evaluated to satisfy the design criteria when stub columns fabricated with HSA800 steel were eccentrically loaded. This test was conducted on box-shaped and H-shaped steels stub columns with high-strength steel to verify the P-M interaction of members subjected to combined forces according to axial load ratios. The results showed that all specimens were satisfied the requirements of Korean Building Code(KBC2009) for using of structural members.

  • This study estimates the flexural behavior of reinforced recycled aggregate concrete beams. Three specimens with different types and water absorption of coarse aggregates were constructed and tested. Not only all specimens were designed to be subjected to 4-point concentrated loads, but also the shear span-to-depth ratio of 2.5 was adjusted to all specimens to increase the effect of shear. A nonlinear flexural analysis considering the tension stiffening effect of concrete was performed to predict the moment versus curvature relationships of the specimens. Furthermore, a nonlinear finite element analysis considering the effect of shear was carried out to estimate the behavior of the specimens. It can be found from experimental results that the flexural strength and the crack properties of the specimens with recycled coarse aggregate having a water absorption of 6% were similar to those of the specimen with natural aggregates. The comparison between the experimental and analytical results showed that existing analytical methods can be successfully used to predict the behavior of reinforced recycled aggregate concrete beams.
