A flexible-base coupled-two-beam (CTB) discrete model with equivalent tuned mass dampers is used to assess the effect of soil-structure interaction (SSI) and different types of lateral resisting systems on the design of passive dynamic absorbers (PDAs) under the action of along-wind and across-wind loads due to vortex shedding. A total of five different PDAs are considered in this study: (1) tuned mass damper (TMD), (2) circular tuned sloshing damper (C-TSD), (3) rectangular tuned sloshing damper (R-TSD), (4) two-way liquid damper (TWLD) and (5) pendulum tuned mass damper (PTMD). By modifying the non-dimensional lateral stiffness ratio, the CTB model can consider lateral deformations varying from those of a flexural cantilever beam to those of a shear cantilever beam. The Monte Carlo simulation method was used to generate along-wind and across-wind loads correlated along the height of a real shear wall-frame building, which has similar fundamental periods of vibration and different modes of lateral deformation in the xz and yz planes, respectively. Ambient vibration tests were conducted on the building to identify its real lateral behavior and thus choose the most suitable parameters for the CTB model. Both alongwind and across-wind responses of the 144-meter-tall building were computed considering four soil types (hard rock, dense soil, stiff soil and soft soil) and a single PDA on its top, that is, 96 time-history analyses were carried out to assess the effect of SSI and lateral resisting system on the PDAs design. Based on the parametric analyses, the response significantly increases as the soil flexibility increases for both type of lateral wind loads, particularly for flexural-type deformations. The results show a great effectiveness of PDAs in controlling across-wind peak displacements and both along-wind and across-wind RMS accelerations, on the contrary, PDAs were ineffective in controlling along-wind peak displacements on all soil types and different kind of lateral deformation. Generally speaking, the maximum possible value of the PDA mass efficiency index increases as the soil flexibility increases, on the contrary, it decreases as the non-dimensional lateral stiffness ratio of the building increases; therefore, there is a significant increase of the vibration control effectiveness of PDAs for lateral flexural-type deformations on soft soils.
A simple hyperbolic shear deformation theory taking into account transverse shear deformation effects is proposed for the free flexural vibration analysis of thick functionally graded plates resting on elastic foundations. By considering further supposition, the present formulation introduces only four unknowns and its governing equations are therefore reduced. Hamilton's principle is employed to obtain equations of motion and Navier-type analytical solutions for simply-supported plates are compared with the available solutions in literature to check the accuracy of the proposed theory. Numerical results are computed to examine the effects of the power-law index and side-to-thickness ratio on the natural frequencies.
Finding reasonable flexural modes from the full vehicle modal testing has always been a difficult job to N&V engineers due to FRF inconsistency, nonlinearity, heavy damping and, in many cases, interactions between global body structural modes and massive isolate/non-isolated subsystem modes. This paper provides a brier overview of the mode map validation using single-run FRF measurement with highly sensitive accelerometers fur the full vehicle modal analysis and then it can be used to characterize the vehicle's global/local vibration performances, especially customer perceived "structural feel" typically below 40Hz.
Delamination of cover concrete due to re-bar corrosion is a critical damage reducing structural safety of reinforced concrete structures. Therefore, it should be detected and evaluated to provide appropriate maintenance to recover structural integrity. Impact-echo method, which utilizes thickness vibration characteristics of delaminated concrete section, is effective for detection and evaluation of small areal size delamination. However, it may not be applicable for large areal size delamination in which flexural vibration modes are dominated. In this study, applicability of vibration mode shapes of delaminated concrete section is investigated for visualization of delamination region in concrete structures. Numerical and experimental modal tests are performed to estimate mode shapes of delaminated concrete section and linear absolute summation technique is proposed for effective visualization of delamination region based on estimated mode shapes.
In this paper, approximate solutions of the von Karman equations for the free flexural vibration of a transversely isotropic thin rectangular plate with two simply supported edges and two clamped edges are obtained. Applying one term Ritz-Galerkin procedure, the spatial dependent part of the equation is separated and time dependent function is found to be the Duffing's equation. Then the relation between nonlinear period and amplitude of the vibration is obtained by using averaging method which is a method of the perturbation procedure. It can be seen that averaging method is easy and agrees well with prior results.
Dynamic characteristics of smart laminated composite plates with passive constrained layer damping have been investigated to design structure with maximum possible damping capacity. The equations of motion are derived for flexural vibrations of symmetrical, multi-layer laminated plates. The damping ratio and modal damping of the first bending and torsional modes are calculated by means of iterative complex eigensolution method. The structural damping index(SDI) is introduced to determine the optimum placement of viscoelastic patch. This paper addresses a design strategy of laminated composite plate under vibrations.
In this study, the seismic control performance of energy dissipation devices installed in a shear all-frame structure is investigated through nonlinear time history analysis of a 12-story building. Inelastic shear walls are modeled using the multiple vertical line element model (MVLEM) and inelastic columns and girders were modeled using fiber beam elements. For a seismic load increased by 38% compared to the design load, the seismic control performance was analyzed based on the results of a nonlinear time history analysis in terms of the inter-story drift, the story shear and the flexural strain. Friction type dampers was found to performs best if they are installed in the form of a brace adjacent to the shear wall with the friction force of 15 % of the maximum story shear force induced in the original building structure without dampers.
Sandwich elements have high flexural rigidity and high strength per density. They also have excellent anti-vibration and anti-noise characteristics. Therefore, they are used for structures of airplanes and high speed ships that must be light, as well as strong. In this paper, the Reissner-Mindlin's plate theory is studied from a Hamilton's principle point of view. This theory is modified to include the influence of shear deformation and rotary inertia, and the equation of motion is derived using energy relationships. The theory is applied to a rectangular sandwich model which has isotropic, asymmetrical faces and an isotropic core. Investigations are conducted for five different plate thicknesses. These plates are identical to the sandwich plates currently used in various structural elements of surface effect ships (SES). The boundary conditions are set to simple supports and fixed supports. The elastic and shear moduli are obtained from the four-point bending tests on the sandwich beams.
In this study, the modified finite element- transfer matrix methods are proposed for free vibration analysis of asymmetric structures, the bearing system of which consists of shear wall-frames. In the study, a multi-storey structure is divided into as many elements as the number of storeys and storey masses are influenced as separated at alignments of storeys. The shear walls and frames are assumed to be flexural and shear cantilever beam structures. The storey stiffness matrix is obtained by formulating the governing equation at the center of mass for the shear walls and the frames in the i.th floor. The system transfer matrix is constructed in the dimension of $6{\times}6$ by transforming the obtained stiffness matrix. Thus, the dimension, which is $12n{\times}12n$ in classical finite elements, is reduced to the dimension of $6{\times}6$. To study the suitability of the method, the results are assessed by solving two examples taken from the literature.
This paper deals with the free vibrations of circular curved beams with thin-walled cross-section. The differential equation for the coupled flexural-torsional vibrations of such beams with warping is solved numerically to obtain natural frequencies and mode shapes. The Runge-Kutta and determinant search methods, respectively, are used to solve the governing differential equation and to compute the eigenvalues. The lowest three natural frequencies and corresponding mode shapes are calculated for the thin-walled horizontally curved beams with hinged-hinged, hinged-clamped, and clamped-clamped end constraints. A wide range of opening angle of beam, warping parameter, and two different values of slenderness ratios are considered. Numerical results are compared with existing exact and numerical solutions by other methods.
