In the development and mass production of polymers, there are many uncontrollable variables. Even small changes in chemical composition, structure, and processing conditions can lead to large variations in properties. Therefore, Traditional linear modeling techniques that assume a general environment often produce significant errors when applied to field data. In this study, we propose a new modeling method (GPR-SEM) that combines Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) and Gaussian Process Regression (GPR) to study the Friction-Coefficient and Flexural-Strength properties of Polyacetal resin, an engineering plastic, in order to meet the recent trend of using plastics in industrial drive components. And we also consider the possibility of using it for materials modeling with nonlinearity.

RC flat plate, which has no large flexural stiffness by boundary beams, may be governed by serviceability as well as strength condition. A construction sequence and its impact on distributions of construction loads among slabs tied by shores are decisive factors on immediate and long term performances of flat plate. The over-loading and tensile cracking in early-aged slabs significantly increase the deflection of flat plate system. In this study, for slab deflections, the practical analysis scheme using a linear analysis program is formulated with considering construction sequence and concrete cracking effects. The concept of the effective moment of inertia in calculating deflections of one-way bending member, that is presented in structural design codes, is extended to the finite element analysis of the two-way slab system of flat plates. Effects of over-loads during construction on deflections of flat plate system are analyzed by applying the proposed practical analysis scheme into the critical construction load conditions calculated from the simplified method.

PURPOSES : The purpose of this study is to validate the design criteria of the concrete modular road system, which is a new semi-bridge-type concept road, through a comparison of numerical analysis results and actual loading test results under static axial loads. METHODS : To design the semi-bridge-type modular road, both the bridge design code and the concrete structural design code were adopted. The standard truck load (KL-510) was applied as the major traffic vehicle for the design loading condition. The dimension of the modular slab was designed in consideration of self-weight, axial load, environmental load, and combined loads, with ultimate limit state coefficients. The ANSYS APDL (2010) program was used for case studies of center and edge loading, and the analysis results were compared with the actual mock-up test results. RESULTS : A full-scale mock-up test was successfully conducted. The maximum longitudinal steel strains were measured as about 35 and 83.5 micro-strain (within elastic range) at center and edge loading locations, respectively, under a 100 kN dual-wheel loading condition by accelerating pavement tester. CONCLUSIONS : Based on the results of the comparison between the numerical analysis and the full-scale test, the maximum converted stress range at the edge location is 32~51% of the required standard flexural strength under the two times over-weight loading condition. In the case of edge loading, the maximum converted stresses from the Westergaard equation, the ANSYS APDL analysis, and the mock-up test are 1.95, 1.7, and 2.3 times of that of the center loading case, respectively. The primary reason for this difference is related to the assumption of the boundary conditions of the vertical connection between the slab module and the crossbeam module. Even though more research is required to fully define the boundary conditions, the proposed design criteria for the concrete modular road finally seems to be reasonable.
This paper presented an integral design procedure for demountable bolted composite frames with semi-rigid joints. Moment-rotation relationships of beam-to-column joints were predicted with analytical models aiming to provide accurate and reliable analytical solutions. Among this, initial stiffness of beam-to-column joints was derived on the basis of Timoshenko's plate theory, and moment capacity was derived in accordance with Eurocodes. The predictions were validated with relevant test results prior to further applications. Frame analysis was conducted by using Abaqus software with material and geometrical nonlinearity considered. Variable lateral loads incorporating wind actions and earthquake actions in accordance with Australian Standards were adopted to evaluate the flexural behaviour of the composite frames. Strength and serviceability limit state criteria were utilized to verify configurations of designed models. A wide range of frames with the varied number of storeys and bays were thereafter programmed to ascertain bending moment envelopes under various load combinations. The analytical results suggest that the proposed approach is capable of predicting the moment-rotation performance of the semi-rigid joints reasonably well. Outcomes of the frame analysis indicate that the load combination with dead loads and live loads only leads to maximum sagging and hogging moment magnitudes in beams. As for lateral loads, wind actions are more crucial to dominate the design of the demountable composite frames than earthquake actions. No hogging moment reversal is expected in the composite beams given that the frames are designed properly. The proposed analysis procedure is demonstrated to be a simple and efficient method, which can be applied into engineering practice.
Purpose: Zirconia is differentiated from other ceramics because of its high resistance to corrosion and wear, excellent flexural strength (900~1400 MPa), and high hardness. Dental zirconia with proven mechanical/biological stability is suitable for the manufacture of implants. However, there are limited in vivo studies evaluating stress distribution in zirconia compared with that in titanium implants and studies analyzing finite elements. This study was conducted to evaluate the stress distribution of the supporting bone surrounding zirconia and titanium implants using the finite element analysis method. Methods: For finite element analysis, a single implant-supported restoration was designed. Using a universal analysis program, eight occlusal points were set in the direction of the occlusal long axis. The occlusal load was simulated at 700 N. Results: The zirconia implant (47.7 MPa) von Mises stress decreased by 5.3% in the upper cortical bone compared with the titanium implant (50.2 MPa) von Mises stress. Similarly, the zirconia implant (20.8 MPa) von Mises stress decreased by almost 4% in the cancellous bone compared with the titanium implant (21.7 MPa) von Mises stress. The principal stress in the cortical and cancellous bone exhibited a similar propensity to von Mises stress. Conclusion: In the supporting bone, the zirconia implant is able to reduce bone resorption caused by mechanically transferred stress. It is believed that the zirconia implant can be a potential substitute for the titanium implant by reinforcing aesthetic characteristics and improving stress distribution.

A simple model for reinforced concrete shear walls with boundary elements is proposed, which is a macro-model composed of spring elements representing flexure and shear behaviors. The flexural behaviour is represented by vertical springs at the wall ends, where the moment strength and rotational capacity of the wall are based on section analysis. The shear behaviour is represented by a horizontal spring at the wall center, where the key parameters for the shear behavior are based on the flexural behaviour since the shear walls with boundary elements are governed by the flexure. The proposed model was prepared with the results of hysteretic tests of the shear walls, and then the reliability of the hysteretic rule and variables was investigated by nonlinear dynamic analyses. Using parametric study with nonlinear dynamic analyses, the effect of the variables on demand and capacity, which are major parameters in seismic performance evaluation, are investigated. Results show that the measured and calculated shear forces versus the shear distortion relationships are slightly different, but the global response is well simulated. Furthermore, the demand and capacity are also changed in a similar way to the change in the major parameters so that the proposed model may be appropriate for reinforced concrete shear walls with boundary elements.
This study discussed the influence of mixtures and curing conditions on the development of strength and microstructure of RPC using ternary pozzolanic materials. Through pilot experiment, various RPC was manufactured by adding single or mixed ternary pozzolanic materials such as silica fume, blast furnace slag and fly ash by mass of cement, up to 0~65%, and cured by using 4 types of method which are water and air-dried curing at $20^{\circ}C$, steam and hot-water curing at $90^{\circ}C$. The results show that the use of ternary pozzolanic materials and a suitable curing method are an effective method for improving development of strength and microstructure of RPC. The unit volume of cement was greatly reduced in RPC with ternary pozzolanic materials and unlike hydration reaction in cement, the pozzolanic reaction noticeably contributes to a reduction in hydration heat and dry shrinkage. A considerable improvement was found in the flexural strength of RPC using ternary pozzolanic materials, and then the utilization of a structural member subjected to bending was expected. The X-ray diffractometer (XRD) analysis and Scanning Electronic Microscope (SEM) revealed that the microstructure of RPC was denser by using the ternary pozzolanic materials than the original RPC containing silica fume only.
The use of spliced reinforcing bars in sustainable concrete members to manage inadequate bars length is a common practical issue which is may be due to some limitations. The lap splicing means two bars overlapped in parallel with specified length called the splice length in order to provide the required bond between the two bars. The bond between sustainable concrete and spliced steel bars is another important issue. The normal strength sustainable concrete specimens of sizes 1700×150×150 mm with tension reinforcement lap spliced were selected according to testing device length limitations. These members were designed to fail in flexure in order to investigate the lap spliced tension bars effect. The selected lap spliced tension bars were of 10 mm size with smooth and deformed surfaces in order to investigate the surface nature accompanied with the splice nature. The sustainable concrete mechanical properties and mix workability were also studied. This study reveals that the effect of number of spliced bars on the response of beams reinforced with smooth bars is found to be more obvious than deformed one. Finite element modeling in three dimensions was carried out for the tested beams using ABAQUS software. A parametric study is carried out using finite elements on considering the following parameters, concrete compressive strength, load type and opening in cross section (hollow section) for weight reduction purposes. The laboratory and numerical results show good agreements in terms of ultimate load and deflection with an average difference of 10% and 15% in ultimate load and deflection respectively.
Nanocelluloses, mainly cellulose nanofibrils (CNF) and cellulose nanocrystals (CNC, i.e., defect-free, rod-like crystalline residues after acid hydrolysis of fibers), have been the subject of recent interest. Due to the presence of hydroxyl groups on the surface of nanocelluloses, their surfaces are reactive, making them suitable candidates for reinforcing materials for manufacturing polymer composites. In this study, CNF was used as a reinforcing material for manufacturing cement composites. CNF was prepared by TEMPO (2,2,6,6,-tetramethyl piperidine-1-oxyl radical) oxidation procedure combined with extensive homogenization and ultrasonication. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis of the suspension showed the width of CNF between 10 and 15 nm. The compressive strength of cement composites containing 0.5% CNF was comparable to that of conventional cement composites. On the other hand, the tensile and flexural strength were improved by 49.7% and 38.8%, respectively, compared to those of conventional cement composites. Also, at an ambient condition, the degree of self-shrinkage reduction reached to 18.9% in one day, followed by 5.9% in 28 days after molding.
To determine the effect of chemical structure of aromatic amino curing agents on thermal and mechanical properties, standard epoxy resin DGEBF (diglycidylether of bisphenol F) was cured with diaminodiphenyl methane (DDM) and diaminodiphenyl sulphone (DDS) in a stoichiometrically equivalent ratio. From this work the effect of aromatic amino curing agents on the thermal and mechanical properties is significantly influenced by the chemical structure of curing agents. In contrast, the results show that the DGEBF/DDS system having the sulfone structure between the benzene rings had higher values in the thermal stability, density, shrinkage ($\%$), thermal expansion coefficient, tensile modulus and strength, flexural modulus and strength than the DGEBF/DDM system having methylene structure between the benzene rings, whereas the DGEBF/DDS system presented low values in maximum exothermic temperature, conversion of epoxide, and grass transition temperature. These results are caused by the relative effects of sulfone group having strong electronegativity and methylene group having (+) repulsive property. The result of fractography shows that the grain distribution of DGEBF/DDS system is more irregular than that of the DGEBF/DDM system.
