  • This article presents a combined structure of serial and parallel mechanisms for a humanoid robot. The 3 DOF parallel structure is designed and added to the waist of the humanoid robot arm to give flexible bending and rotating motions. Forward and inverse kinematics of a serial and parallel robot have been analyzed to generate motions. Simulation studies of verifying kinematics solutions of the parallel robot have been done. Experimental studies of mimicking shake-hands motion have been conducted to show the feasibility and usability of the combined structure.

  • The purposes of this paper are the review and derivation of design characteristics for the new construction of the practical flexible manufacturing system. The basic ideas to analyze the manufacturing system which is the automatically operated are dependant on the various manufacturing procedures in factory. The practical flexible manufacturing systems have various mechanical subsystems appropriated fur the final manufacturing products. Therefore the systems have the various kinds of hardwares as well as softwares. We study the software for the practical flexible manufacturing system designed and developed in the Halla University with the related company. Specially the design concepts and using specifications of all subsystems which are composed of mechanical and electronic movements of the product are analyzed and introduced in this dissertation.

  • A new control strategy to actively control the vibration of a very flexible single link manipulator is proposed and experimentally realized. The control scheme consists of two actuators; a motor mounted at the beam hub and a piezoceramic bonded to the surface of the flexible link. The control torque of the motor to produce a desired angular motion is firstly determined by employing a sliding mode control theory on the equivalent rigid dynamics. The torque is then applied to the flexible manipulator in order to activate the commanded motion. During the motion, underirable oscillation is actively suppressed by applying a feedback control voltage to the piezoceramic actuator. Consequently, the desired tip position is favorably accomplished without vibration. Measured control responses are presented in order to demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed control methodology.

  • This paper concerns a SCARA robot with the flexible forearm linked to the rigid upper arm. The equations of motion are derived by the Lagrangian mechanics. For controller design, the perturbation approach is taken to separate the original equations of motion into linear equations describing small perturbed motions and nonlinear equations describing purely rigid motion of the robot. To effect the desired payload motion, open loop control inputs are determined based on the inverse dynamics of the latter. In order to reduce the positional error during maneuver, an active vibration suppression is done. To this end, a feedback control is designed for robustness against disturbance on the basis of the linear equations and the LQR theory modified to have a prescribed degree of stability. The proposed control scheme shows satisfactory performances in experiments as well as in numerical simulations.

  • In this paper, our aim is to develop a model for two cooperating flexible manipulators handling a rigid object by using lumped parameters. This model is in turn analyzed on MATLAB. In order to validate the model, a precise simulation model is developed using $ADAMS^{TM}$ (Automatic Dynamic Analysis of Mechanical System). Moreover, to clarify the discussion, the motions of a dual-arm experimental flexible manipulator are considered. Using the developed model, we control a robotic system with a symmetric hybrid position/force control scheme. Finally, experiments and simulations are performed, and a comparison of simulation results with experimental results is given to a rerify the validity of our model.

  • Linear controllers, such as LQG/LTR controller, have been investigated to control flexible link manipulators. The performance and complexity of these depend largely on the linearized model upon which the controller is designed. In this study, singular perturbation model is tested in designing a LQG/LTR controller for a flexible link manipulator. The order of the resulting controller is much lower than the one based on a full model. Through numerical study, it is shown that the performance of the proposed controller reaches reasonably to the one based on the full model.

  • We suggest how to program off-line robot path along shoes' outsole shape in the footwear buffing process by a 5-axis microscribe system like robot arms. This microscribe system developed consists a 5-axis robot link with a turn table, signal processing circuit, PC and an application software program. It makes a robot path on the shoe's upper through the movement of a microscribe with many joints. To do this, first it reads 5-encoder's pulse values while a robot arm points a shoes' outsole shape from the initial status. This system developed calculates the encoder pulse values for the robot arm's rotation and transmits the angle pulse values to the PC through a circuit. Then, Denavit-Hartenberg's(D-H) direct kinematics is used to make the global coordinate from robot joint one. The determinant is obtained with kinematics equation and D-H variable representation. To drive the kinematics equation, we have to set up the standard coordinates first. The many links and the more complicated structure cause the difficult kinematics problem to solve in the geometrical way. Thus, we can solve the robot's kinematics problems efficiently and systematically by Denavit-Hartenberg's representation. Finally, with the coordinate values calculated above, it can draw a buffing gauge-line on the upper. Also, it can program off-line robot path on the shoes' upper. We are subjected to obtaining shoes' outline points, which are 2 outlines coupled with the points and the normal vector based on the points. These data is supposed to be transformed into .dxf file to be used for data of automatic buffing robot. This system developed is simulated by using spline curves coupled with each point from dxf file in Autocad. As a result of applying this system to the buffing robot in the flexible footwear manufacturing system, it can be used effectively to program the path of a real buffing robot.

  • The presence of joint elasticity or the arm flexibility causes low damped oscillatory position error along a desired trajectory. We utilize a stochastic model for describing the fast dynamics and the approximation error. A second order shaping filter is synthesized such that its spectrum matches that of the fast dynamics. Augmenting the state vector of slow part with that of shaping filter, we obtain a nonlinear dynamics to which a Gaussian white noise is injected. This modeling approach leads us to the design of an extended Kalman filter(KEF) and a linear quadratic Gaussian(LQG) control scheme. We present the simulation results of this control method. The simulation results show us that our Kalman filtering approach is one of prospective methods in controlling the flexible arms.

  • Cooperation and collaboration with robots are key functions of robotic utility that are currently developing. Thus, robots should be safe and resemble human beings to cope with these needs. In particular, dual-arm robots that mimic human kinetics are becoming the focus of recent industrial robotics research. Their size is similar to the size of a human adult; however, they lack natural, human-like motion. One of the critical reasons for this is the shoulder complex. Most recent dual-arm robots have only 2 degrees of freedoms (DOFs), which significantly limits the workspace and mobility of the shoulders and arms. Therefore, a redundant shoulder complex could be very important in new developments that enable new capabilities. However, constructing a kinematically redundant shoulder complex is difficult because of spatial constraints. Therefore, we propose a novel, redundant shoulder complex for a human-like robot that is driven by flexible wire tendons. This kinematically redundant shoulder complex allows human-like robots to move more naturally because of redundant DOFs. To control the proposed shoulder complex, a hybrid control scheme is used. The positioning precision has also been considered, and the ability of the shoulder complex to perform several human-like motions has been verified.
