  • When manufactured parts undergo large deformations during the manufacturing process, the global specifications of a part based on the concept of tolerance zone defined in the ISO 1101 standard [1] enable one to control the part's global defects. However, the extent of this tolerance zone is too large when the objective is to minimize local defects, such as hollows and bumps. Therefore, it is necessary to address local defects and global defects separately. This paper refers to the ISO 10579 standard [2] for flexible parts, which enables us to define a stressed state in order to measure the part by straightening it to simulate its position in the mechanism. The originality of this approach is that the straightening operation is performed numerically by calculating the displacement of a cloud of points. The results lead to a quantification of the global defects through various simple models and enable us to extract local defects. The outcome is an acceptable tolerance solution. The procedure is first developed for the simple example of a steel bar with a rectangular cross section, then applied to an industrial case involving a complex 3D surface of a turbine blade. The specification is described through ISO standards both in the free state and in the straightened state.

  • In this paper, a new electromagnetic circuit is proposed for an optical pickup actuator with high sensitivity. Contrary to those of conventional actuators, the proposed circuit has two focusing coils which are diagonally placed at the front and rear of a moving part. The configuration which makes the effective length of the focusing coil longer and the moving part lighter, is helpful in increasing the sensitivity of the actuator. However, the asymmetry of the moving part by two focusing coils causes flexible node vibrations in quite low frequency range. This paper shows that the design modification of the moving part for the reconfiguration of mass moment of inertia can reduce the mode vibrations.

  • In accordance with the trend for cooperation of related company, BOM (Bill of Materials) has become an important factor in the manufacturing of production. BOM manages a various basic information of design, production, and process and so on. Especially, automobile industries are related to many company, they build a cooperative system from the communication of information. In this study, we have analyzed a BOM structure of a well-used automobile part industry and proposed a structure of engineering BOM, manufacturing BOM, process BOM for cooperative environment. A proposed various BOM structure are flexible in responding to the situation of structure alternations for automobile part. And also they include in environment factors. It is expected that these BOM structure will be used to basic template in automobile part industry which could be loaded with cooperative hub-system.

  • This paper presents the results of the systems analysis for the FCIM (Flexible Computer Integrated Manufacturing) system at the U.S. Tobyhanna Army Repair Depot, which is one of the RAMP (Rapid Acquisition of Manufactured Part) program sites for CALS implementation in the U.S. military. The FCIM system's acquisition and supply processes are represented by IDEFO function models and FCIM information systems are briefly decribed in this paper. The models presented here can be used at a reference for the development of CALS acquisition and supply systems. In addition. the distinction between input and control information on the IDEFO model it suggested from the practical modeling viewpoint.

  • This paper discusses on the machine loading and tool allocation (MLTA) problem. Mathematical formulation of the problem is given first. Then a heuristic approach based on Group Technology (GT) is presented to deal with the MLTA problem effectively. By using this approach, part-tool group generation and their assignment to adequate machines can easily be obtained in consideration of the work load on each machine, the number of tool-set replacement, and the total number of cutting tools required through the interactive setting of the desired machine utilization rate.

  • The FMS(flexible Manufacturing System) was introduced to the part manufacturing industry more than twenty years ago. Considering the vast capital investment and today's competitive environment, it is very important to effectively manage and control the FMS including the day to day disturbances while meeting customer requirements.(omitted)

  • Rubbing occurs when a rotor contacts with a stator during whirling motion of the rotor. Compared to full annular rub, partial rub against a nonrotating part is more common in practice. In this study, several partial rubbing phenomena of superharmonic and subharmonic vibrations and jump phenomenon are demonstrated experimentally for the cases of light and heavy rub for a flexible rotor. The orbit patterns of forward or backward whirling are also calculated using directional spectrum analysis. The occurrence if subharmonic vibration during heavy rub is demonstrated as one impact per two rotations both experimentally and numerically.

  • Due-date is an important factor in Flexible Manufacturing System scheduling. Even though most of researchers have focused part selection and loading problem using fixed due-date assignment rules, FMSs consist of multi-function machines which facilitate alternative processes. This research investigates interactions of three dispatching mechanisms, three NSS (Next Station Selection) rules and four due-date assignment rules using simulation. Both cost-based and time-based performance measures are considered in this research.

  • This paper presents one possible approach for liberalization of the radio spectrum based around spectrum usage rights (SURs) which are technology and usage neutral. This is challenging technically because of the complexity of defining rights which are flexible and technology-neutral while retaining sufficient safeguards against interference. The work presented here is part of an ongoing process of defining and testing SURs. Of com is currently considering SURs, though is not committed to implementing them at this stage, and will issue further discussion documents on this area in due course.
