  • This study is on the spacial flexbility of house. In the recent days, it is true that the qualitative aspect of residence rather than the quantitative one has emphasized. But the inhabitants of residence undergo adaptation problems to deal with changing needs constantly. Residence must be the place to satisfy inhabitant's desire to live and dwell. According to changes in family life cylce and personal demand, the flexibility in housing should be beneficial. This study attempts to solve relationships of these need changes and inhabitant's adaptation through the spatial flexibility. Throughout the process of main discourse, some theoretical backgrounds of housing are applied. And to introduce the flexibility of residential space, concepts of flexibility according to 'time' and 'spatial structure' are employed. In addition to functionality and comfort, living should provide a touch of humanity attuned to individual sensibilities. The purpose of this study is to suggest a method can move interior structure by the flexible planning.

  • Human activity pattern has been changed as the contemporary urban society changes. Diverse activities repeat regular patterns as time passes. Diagram is a simple drawing which aims to organize and unify various information. The elements of the social behaviour could be spatialized by means of diagram applications. By using diagrams, architects understand contemporary urban society and form new space conditions. Time-based activity patterns consists of activity pattern in a restricted space and in urban structure for space use. Activity patterns for different time zones are explained by two types of diagrams, space occupation and flexibility of space, By the characteristic of space system structred by these diagrams, activities and programs are rearranged and variety of space is allowed through flexibility. Also, programs are mixed to apply to simultaneous occurrence of ever-changing human activities.

  • This study aims to suggest improvement plans and explain about the current situation for facilitating Long-life housing, based on the results on flexibility items among 27 items consisting the "Housing Performance Grading System". From the 9th of January, 2006 to the month of July in 2011, study has analyzed evaluation results on 216 different types for each grade and reviewed evaluation criteria and methods. Current evaluation criteria applies quantitative analysis, by calculating in percentage how much bearing walls and columns, which hinder flexibility, take up space in the household. The evaluation rate for each household was assessed in relation to its structural system, and a higher grade was given to column-typed structures. In addition, to facilitate long-life housing, this study extracted harmful factors, expanding the range of evaluation. The first step was to evaluate structure, which is the basic element. The second step can to evaluate the probability of applying resources in response to the changes of structural systems. As The third step, Flexibility item will evaluate the probability of moving the water-using area, suggesting gradual approach. Thus, through evaluations of flexibility items, the study aims to improve the quality of life in household, by avoiding uniform structures and acquiring more freedom for space designs.

  • This paper presents a global mode modeling of space structures and a control scheme from the practical point of view. Since the size of the satellite has become bigger and the accuracy of attitude control more strictly required, it is necessary to consider the structural flexibility of the spacecraft. Although it is well known that the finite element (FE) model can accurately model the flexibility of the satellite, there are associated problems : FE model has the system matrix with high order and does not provide any physical insights, and is available only after all structural features have been decided. Therefore, it is almost impossible to design attitude and orbit controller using FE model unless the structural features are in place. In order to deal with this problem, the control design scheme with the global mode (GM) model is suggested. This paper describes a flexible structure modeling and three-axis controller design process and demonstrates the adequate performance of the design with respect to the maneuverability by applying it to a large flexible spacecraft model.

  • The present study approached the characteristics of various space compositions in contemporary residential architecture through the concept of ex-formality, and found that ex-formal spaces are composed through the variation of floor, wall, ceiling or roof and derived four types of ex-formal space composition - ex-cubic space composition using folding, plastic space composition using the plasticity of concrete, atypical space composition using geometric manipulation, and non linear space composition using digital technology. Based on this, additionally, we derived elements expressing the characteristics of ex-formal space composition, which are obliqueness, inclination, flexibility in ex-cubic space composition using folding, plasticity and fluidity in plastic space composition using the plasticity of concrete, ex-construction, dynamism and asymmetry in atypical space composition using geometric manipulation, and flexibility, fluidity, self similarity and plasticity in non linear space composition using digital technology. On the other hand, this study purposed to help understand various space expression patterns of contemporary residential architecture by analyzing how these types of ex-formal space composition and polysemous expression characteristics have been represented in contemporary residential architecture since the 1990s.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the planning characteristics and it's applications of container architecture in Seoul and Kyunggi Area. A document research and field survey were used to analyze and classify the spatial characteristics of the container architecture since 2009. Based on the results of the critical review, this research proposed a framework to identify the potential of the container architecture for sustainable and flexible planning. The framework was composed of four dimensions such as flexibility, rapidity, sustainability and economic feasibility. The types of space construction were dynamically self-erecting structure, incremental structure, mobile and disposable architecture. The spacial aspects were commercial spaces, housing spaces such as dormitory and urban compact apartments, and the multi-purpose spaces such as gallery and culture space as well as temporary spaces. It attempted to resolve the concept of flexibility and mobility through the experiment so that they might apply to the space of contemporary city.

  • This paper considers the value of warehousing contract under probabilistic demands. We consider a supply chain consisting of a supplier, a retailer and its third-party warehousing partner who provides the warehousing service to the retailer through an outsourcing contract. A typical contract is specified by initial space commitment and modification schedule. The retailer decides the order quantity for the supplier and space commitment for the outsourcing contract. Since there is close relationship between order quantity and space commitment to minimize the total cost including ordering cost, inventory carrying cost, shortage cost, and warehousing cost, we develop an analytical model under probabilistic demands, where the retailer can determine the optimal order size and space commitment level jointly. We found the closed-form optimum for a single-period case and the optimal conditions for a two-period case. To evaluate the value of contract flexibility for the two-period case, we compared the total cost under two policies; one with modification, under which the base commitment can be changed at the start of each period and the other without modification. From results of our numerical analysis, we showed that the modification policy is more cost-effective as the variability of demand increases.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between play behaviors and young children's playfulness in a variety of play space environments. The subjects were 150 4-year old children of 29 mixed-age classes in childcare centers of Seoul and Gyeonggi area. The results were as follows; (1) Their play behaviors differed according to their play environment in terms of classroom spaces. Solitary-active play behaviors were more frequently observed in large play spaces than small. (2) Leading participation, cognitive flexibility, voluntary full immersion, and total playfulness scores correlated negatively with reticent behavior. Leading participation, voluntary full immersion, and total playfulness scores, on the other hand, correlated positively with group play behavior. (3) In small play spaces, leading participation, voluntary full immersion correlated negatively with reticent behavior, but leading participation correlated positively with group play. In middle play spaces, cognitive flexibility correlated negatively with reticent behavior. In large play spaces, voluntary full immersion correlated negatively with parallel play, but leading participation, cognitive flexibility, expressions of joy, voluntary full immersion, and total playfulness score correlated positively with group play.

  • Transformation of complexity and diverse life style of contemporary men have call for increase in demand of single's and couple's living space of one-room apartment. Feasibility for intensive use of one-room apartment, regardless of it's openness and flexible character, multiple function in a single concentrated room without privacy and lack of confrontation of the changes in diverse living pattern enhance uniformity which reflects as an essential problem. Therefore, this study is to present a direction of one-room apartment interior space planning to differentiate from the existing system of uniformity and it's problems. Within the concept of flexibility, establishment of the flexibility factors for the application of hinged system with a movable furniture to compose a flexible space. In conclusion, the applications of hinged system concept of sliding, folding, over-hangings, are applied in existing one-room apartment plan to enhance flexible space planning which to drive in motivation and adaptation of the dweller's life cycle.
