Characterization of Acoustic Emission Signal for Welding Flaw and Stress Corrosion of SPPH Steels (SPPH강의 용접결함과 응력부식에 따른 음향 방출 신호의 특성)

  • An investigation has been made on the relationship between characteristics of Acoustic Emission (AE) signal in welding flaw and the stress corrosion defect in-service for the high pressure pipe steel. In order to tackle the problem of welding flaw in high pressure pipe, specimens were made by the aid of the application of both corrosion liquid usage and a quenching method after local heating. The amplitude of signal was $60{\sim}75\;dB$ in the territory which is suspected for defect, and the specimens which only have welding flaw showed gradients of 0.034, 0.034, 0.035. Moreover, there is a certain increase in gradient even though the differences are very slight. That is, corrosion specimens showed new gradients of 0.040, 0.039, 0.041 which put welding flaw and corrosion mechanism together. After pressurizing 3 minutes, AE signal has been detected from welding flaw easily in each part of the section. It is possible to predict the occurrence and also prevent the damage of stress corrosion crack which has characteristics of cleavage fracture.

Evaluation of Canister Weld Flaw Depth for Concrete Storage Cask (콘크리트 저장용기의 캐니스터 용접부 결함깊이 평가)

  • Domestically developed concrete storage casks include an internal canister to maintain the confinement integrity of radio-active materials. In this study, we analyzed the depth of flaws caused by loads that propagate canister weld cracks under normal, off-normal and accident conditions, and evaluated the maximum allowable weld flaw depth needed to secure the structural integrity of the canister weld and to reduce the welding time of the internal canister lid of the concrete storage cask. Structural analyses for normal, off-normal and accident conditions were performed using the general-purpose finite element analysis program ABAQUS; the allowable flaw depth was assessed according to ASME B&PV Code Section XI. Evaluation results revealed an allowable canister weld flaw depth of 18.75 mm for the concrete storage cask, which satisfies the critical flaw depth recommended in NUREG-1536.

  • In this paper, a new piezoelectric transducer for high performance ultrasonic flaw detector used in non-destructive test (NDT) is implemented. Here, the goals for some major characteristics such as piezoelectric strain constant and electro-mechanical coupling factor are fixed in advanced. Then, the parameters obtained by finite element analysis (FEA) are exploited to design and implement the piezoelectric transducer. As a result of experiments using manufactured samples, it is proved that the new PZT ceramics satisfy the goals very well. It has much improved impedance characteristic at the resonant frequency and generation of ultrasonic signals. In addition, ultrasonic flaw detector with the new transducer provides increased flaw detecting gain than the conventional one. Thus, it is considered that the new flaw detector contributes significantly to improve reliability of the NDT.

Flaw Discrimination for Welding Points in Boiler Tubes by Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing (위상배열초음파탐상검사에 의한 보일러관 용접부의 결함 판별)

  • Nuclear safety law's amendment caused many problems to use radiography testing(RT). Phased array ultrasonic testing(PAUT) was adapted instead of RT for NDE of welding points in boiler tubes these days. Unfortunately, PAUT doesn't give us the discrimination characteristics about flaws distinction and flaws size clearly. In this thesis, the distinction characteristics of flaw types and the detection characteristics of flaw size using PAUT of welding points in boiler tubes were analyzed. It was concluded that PAUT can distinguish between planar flaws and rounded flaws, but it is hard to tell apart the types of flaw respectively. We paid attention to the discrimination of flaws size because PAUT tends to underestimate the flaw size of porosity and underestimate or overestimate the flaw size of porosity.

  • For the evaluation of a flaw in a welded stainless steel by the Time of Flight Diffraction(TOFD) Method, we have made the reference specimen for experimentation. As a result, we could analyze a specific character and the inner state of the structure in a welded stainless steel and we came to the conclusion as followed. (1) For analyze the structure state of a section in a welded stainless steel through the optical microscope, we could have analyzed the generated shape and the location of a flaw and the inner parts of the structure state through the microscope of eighty magnification and two hundred magnification about the soundness, the heat affected zone(HAZ) and the welded part. (2) Through the comparison with the shape and the size of a flaw in the welded part about the conventional ultrasonic test and the TOFD Method, we could make an observation the special character of the TOFD Method and principles. (3) We analyzed and collected the merit of the TOFD Method on the basis of the experimental result by the shape and the size of a flaw in the inner welded parts. So, we made up a base that we could use as a basic data for a similar flaw like that. Through the study as mentioned above, we could make an observation the flaw detective method and principles used in the TOFD Method.

A Fundamental Study on the Fracture Mechanism of Steel Plates under Completely Alternating Load (완전교번하중하(完全交番荷重下)에서의 강판(鋼板)의 파괴기구(破壞機構)에 관한 기차적(基磋的) 연구(研究))

  • Transition process of plastic region. displacements, stresses and strains ahead the flaw tips were analysed by the finite element method on the steel plate with the circular hole and the one with the elliptical hole under completely alternating load (repetition of tensile loading, unloading and compressive loading). As the results, the followings were obtained. Transition process of elastic failure (yielding) region was estimated. From this the tendency was confirmed that the fracture would be initiated from ahead the flaw tip, and propagated along the $45^{\circ}$ direction. The fundamental data available in estimating the stress intensity factor that was considered as the core in analysing the fracture mechanism of steel plates were obtained. It was indicated that when unloading after tension the effect of compressive loading, and even the compressive reyield, was occured ahead the flaw tip. Similarly it was indicated that when unloading after compression the effect of tensile loading, and even the tensile reyield, was occured ahead the flaw tip. It was considered that these phenomena were occured because the unloading effect was constrained by the residual strains when unloading. It was considered that the fatigue phenomenon was occured ahead, the flaw tip by repetition of tensile yield, the above compressive reyield, compressive yeild and the above tensile reyield. In addition, the tendency was confirmed that the fracture ahead the flaw tip was occured as the flaw was changed from the circular hole to the elliptical hole and became to be the crack lastly.

A Study on Failure Assessment Diagrams for a Solid Propellant (고체추진제의 파손평가선도 작성에 관한 연구)

  • Failure mechanisms for a solid propellant were discussed, and the stip-yield and the inherent flaw models were applied to them. Then, failure assessment diagram methods were investigated by means of modified two models. Fracture toughness tests using CCT(center-cracked tension) specimens made of a solid propellant were conducted to generate the failure assessment diagrams. The failure assessment diagram of the inherent flaw model was normalized in order to compare with that of the modified strip-yield model. From the comparison of two failure assessment diagrams, it was found that the failure assessment diagram of the modified inherent flaw model more conservatively assesses the failure than that of the modified strip-yield model.

C-Sphere Strength-Size Scaling in a Bearing-Grade Silicon Nitride

  • A "C-sphere" specimen geometry was used to determine the failure strength distributions of a commercially-available bearing-grade silicon nitride ($Si_3N_4$) with ball diameters of 12.7 and 25.4 mm. Strengths for both diameters were determined using the combination of failure load, C-sphere geometry, and finite element analysis and fitted using two-parameter Weibull distributions. Effective areas of both diameters were estimated as a function of Weibull modulus and used to explore whether the strength distributions predictably scaled between each size. They did not. That statistical observation suggested that the same flaw type did not limit the strength of both ball diameters indicating a lack of material homogeneity between the two sizes. Optical fractography confirmed that. It showed there were two distinct strength-limiting flaw types common to both ball diameters, that one flaw type was always associated with lower strength specimens, and that a significantly higher fraction of the 25.4-mm-diameter C-sphere specimens failed from it. Predictable strength-size-scaling would therefore not result as a consequence of this because these flaw types were not homogenously distributed and sampled in both C-sphere geometries.

  • Numerical modeling of a nondestructive testing system plays an important role in many aspects of quantitative nondestructive evaluation (QNDE). The ultimate goal of a model is to predict test results for a specific flaw in a material. Thus, in ultrasonic testing, a system model should include the transducer, its radiation pattern, the beam reflection and propagation, and scattering from defects. In this paper attention is focused on the scattering model and the scattered fields by defects are observed by an elastodynamic boundary element method. Flaw types addressed are void-like and crack-like flaws. When transverse ultrasonic waves are obliquely incident on the flaw, the angular distribution of far-field scattered displacements are calculated and presented in the form of A-scan mode. The component signals obtained from each scattering problem are identified and their differences are addressed. The numerical results are also compared with those obtained by high frequency approximate solutions.

Yield and Fracture of Paper

  • Traditional theories of the tensile failure of paper have assumed that uniform strain progresses throughout the sheet until an imperfection within the structure causes a catastrophic break. The resistance to tensile elongation is assumed to be elastic , at first, throughout the structure, followed by an overall plastic yield. However, linear image strain analysis (LISA) has demonstrated that the yield in tensile loading of paper is quite non-uniform throughout the structure, Traditional theories have failed to define the flaws that trigger catastrophic failure. It was assumed that a shive or perhaps a low basis weight area filled that role. Studies of the fracture mechanics of paper have typically utilized a well-defined flaw around which yield and failure could be examined . The flaw was a simple razor cut normal to the direction of tensile loading. Such testing is labeled mode I analysis. The included fla in the paper was always normal to the tensile loading direction, never at another orientation . However, shives or low basis weight zones are likely to be at random angular orientations in the sheet. The effects of angular flaws within the tensile test were examined. The strain energy density theory and experimental work demonstrate the change in crack propagation from mode I to mode IIas the initial flaw angle of crack propagation as a function of the initial flaw angle is predicted and experimentally demonstrated.
