  • The objective of this study is to make a comparative study of the operation performance of different type of solar collectors. A flat-plate collector, a single-glazed evacuated collector and a double-glazed evacuated collector are used in this study. These 3 type of collectors are connected in series in the order of a flat-plate collector, a single-glazed evacuated collector and a double-glazed evacuated collector. This experimental facility is a kind of a solar system with a controller, a heat exchanger, a storage tank and a circulation pump. Each collector has a different collection area(flat-plate collector-$6.00m^2$ total area/$5.61m^2$ aperture area, double-glazed evacuated collector-$6.04m^2$ total area/$4.92m^2$ aperture area, single-glazed evacuated collector-$7.65m^2$ total area/$5.61m^2$ aperture area) and its performance characteristic respectively. The experiments have been demonstrated at around $70^{\circ}C$ operating temperature(flat-plate collector inlet temperature). The thermal collecting efficiencies of each collector are obtained under the different insolation and operation condition as a result.

  • In this study we classified sediment types of tidal flat using Landsat-5 images. This is for groping the method which can analyze correctly various kinds of sediment faces through satellite images. This work was performed by referencing ground truth of sediment faces which was investigated in the field. With this data we classified Landsat-5 image of 1997's to grope a most suitable classification method. As a result, in case of south Kanghwa island area, it was the optimum way to compound band 4, 5, 7 of Landsat-5 TM imagery. And, this work classified 3 kinds of sediment faces - M(mud), sM(sandy mud) and (g)M(slightly gravelly mud) - in land and mixed water area. It is anticipated that if this method is applied to a image of extremely lower sea level time, it can classify the sediment types of a broad tidal flat area. This is expected to be a beginning of estimating the effect of sediment faces to the change of the tidal flat ecosystem.

  • It has been known that shallow-water regions, such as tidal flats, sea grass and sea weed beds have water purification capability, and they also serve as nursery grounds for many fishes. On the other hand, tidal flat areas are economically attractive sites for reclamation, to be used for developing industries. When developing shallow-water areas, we have to propose a plan to mitigate the environmental impact associated with such a development plan. However, it is difficult to estimate the affects on the ecosystem and water purification, and the literature related to this matter is insufficient. In order to evaluate the ability of coastal tidal flat and to predict the future changes, it is necessary to develop a reliable prediction technique and construction of data by using a field investigation. In this study, we carried out a numerical model test for the tidal flat ecosystem, using the pelagic system and the benthic system, simultaneously, in order to show a change in the tidal flat ecosystem. The flow of nitrogen, phosphorus and carbon has been identified as a primary consideration of marine ecosystem components, and the capability of water purification and the change of the tidal flat were predicted using this flow. In order to make a more reliable prediction, a field investigation to determine tide, current and creatures of the object coastal area has been done. The purification capability of this shallow-water region is estimated from the model results. According to the results of experiments, the tidal flat has a capability of water purification (Sink) of 11mgN/m2/day, but the other area has a load (Source) of 20mgN/m2/day. As a result, we could confirm that the tidal flat of an object coastal area plays an important role in water purification.

  • As one of the fundamental survey to evaluate purification capacity of pollutants at the tidal flat sediments, we studied vertical environmental characteristics in three tidal flat sediments, Chunjangdae, Eueunri and Gyewhado. These are dissmilar to external feature in each other. The results of this study may be summarized as followed; As the results of particle analysis, Eueunri tidal flat fediment located in Keum river estuary consists of 98.98% as silt & clay, Chunjangdae tidal flat sediment located in SeocheonGun consists of 97.99% as sand. And Gyewhado tidal flat sediment located in Saemankeum in Saemankeum area consists area consists of 32.81% as silt & clay and 67.19% as sand. The concentration of organic pollutants(I.L., COD, POC, PON) in Eueunri tidal flat sediment which highly content of silt & clay were 3~4 times higher than others. The concentration of organic pollutants at each layer were slightly increase goes with deepen layer. The linear correlation between I.L. and COD, POC, PON were obtained. Correlation coefficients were in range of 0.821~0.940. Also the correlation between pH and COD, POC, PON were high(>r=0.9). Filteration rate in Chunjangdae tidal flat sediment was 0.01584cm/s as mean value, but the other were almost nothing filtered off.

  • To decide on the designation of a tidal-flat Provincial Park, a study area was defined in line with domestic and international case studies of Provincial Parks. A survey on landscape, geology, biota, and cultural resources was conducted in four tidal-flat areas including Bigeum-myeon and Docho-myeon, which are part of the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in Shinan, Jeollanam-do. To identify areas most suitable to be designated as Provincial Park, a PSR evaluation process was adopted. This has resulted in the selection of the 'Palgupo' area surrounding Bigeum, Docho, Haui, Shinui, Jaeun, Amtae, Palgeum, Anjwa and Jangsan. Also the tidal-flat areas at Aphae-myeon, which are ecologically linked with the Jeungdo Tidal-flat Provincial Park, were included. The selected areas resulting from this study will meet various characteristics of tidal-flat ecosystems including naturalness, ecological network, rarity and eco-cultural diversity. After the tidal-flat Provincial Park has been specified, there is a need to perform a long-term sustainable management plan.

  • Novel steel fibre reinforced ultra-lightweight cement composite (ULCC) with compressive strength of 87.3MPa and density of $1649kg/m^3$ was developed for the flat slabs in civil buildings. This paper investigated structural behaviours of ULCC flat slabs according to a 4-specimen test program under concentrated loading and some reported test results. The investigated governing parameters on the structural behaviours of the ULCC slabs include volume fraction of the steel fibre and the patch loading area. The test results revealed that ULCC flat slabs with and without flexure reinforcement failed in different failure mode, and an increase in volume fraction of the steel fibre and loading area led to an increase in flexural resistance for the ULCC slabs without flexural reinforcement. Based on the experiment results, the analytical models were developed and also validated. The validations showed that the analytical models developed in this paper could predict the ultimate strength of the ULCC flat slabs with and without flexure reinforcement reasonably well.

  • The Saemangeum tidal flat with an area of approxirnately $233km^2$ is one of the biggest estuarine tidal flats on the west coast of Korea. Because of its location in the estuary of Mangyeong and Dongjin Rivers, the tidal flat receives large amount of sediments. A 33-km long sea dyke, enclosing a coastal zone of $401km^2$, was constructed to reclaim tidal flat in the Saemangeum area. The dyke construction radically changes the local tidal current regime and estuarine circulation. These have an effect on sedimentary environments in the tidal flat. On the tidal flats of the study area net deposition occurred, but net erosion occurred near tidal channel in 2004. The comparison of topography and surface sediments in summer 2004 with those in summer 1988 before the dyke construction showed that elevation increased with maximum 80cm and mean grain sizes were fining at Gwanghwal tidal flats. Sedimentary facies of two cores from Gwanghwal tidal flat revealed homogeneous layers in the upper part suggesting rapid deposition after the dyke construction. The sedimentation rate in Gwanghwal tidal flat(GW 6) using $^{210}Pb$ analysis was about 5.4cm/yr which is well matched with the sedimentation pattern revealed by change in topography.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the impact of sand addition to an intertidal for the development of the Manila clam habitat on benthic community structure. For this, we focused on the spatio-temporal changes in the surface sediment condition and benthic community structure including Manila clam before and after the event. Study site was the lower part of Ojjeom tidal flat in Gonam-myeon, Taean-gun where sand added to on July 2010. We set three stations at each of sand adding area (experimental plot) and non sand-adding area (control plot) and did sampling works ten times from June 2010 to October 2011. Directly after the event, surface sediments changed to very coarse sand, but the state was not maintained over two months because of seasonal sedimentation and finally got back to the original grain sizes in eight months. The number of species and density were temporarily reduced right after the event and polychaetes such as Sternaspis scutata, Ampharete arctica were most negatively affected by the event. However, the number of species and density quickly recovered from the reduction in four to six weeks owing to the recolonization by the existing species and species in the vicinity of the plot. However, despite the recovery of ecological indies, species composition was continuously changed from one to another, thereby community structure stayed unstable condition, especially in some stations with finer sediment in their original condition. After sand addition, density of Manila clam was prominently increased at only one station with coarser sediment in its original condition.

  • Surface sediments for sedimentary analyses were sampled at 199 stations in the study area in August 2003. The surface sediments consisted of six sedimentary facies. Generally, sandy mud sediments dominated in the southern tidal flat of Ganghwa Island and sand sediments dominated in channel and subtidal zones of the western part of Ganghwa Island. The area of sandy mud sediment extended to eastward tidal flat compared to sedimentary facies in August 1997. In 30 surface sediment samples from the Ganghwa tidal flat and subtidal zone, 61 species were recorded in total assemblages, including 34 species of living population. Ammonia beccarii and Elphidium etigoense in living population and Ammonia beccarii, Elphidium etigoense, Jadammina sp. and Textularia earlandi in total assemblage were widely distributed. Generally, relatively large numbers of species and high values of species diversity occurred in the area of western part of tidal flat. Cluster analysis of total assemblages discriminates four biofacies. Biofacies 1 indicated eastern part of the tidal flat and biofacies 4 indicated western part of the tidal flat. Biofacies 3 were transitional zone between biofacies 1 and 4.

  • This study was carried out to survey for morphological change of lower tidal flat near Byunsan-Gosapo beach using single-beam echosounder and sound velocity profiler. Since October 2009 in the center of the region, the erosion occurred about 10~50cm, while either side of the study area is little change. Erosion occurred at the beach, each beach area in the southwest area rather than further accumulation occurred sandbank formed. Observed in the study area near the center of the erosion is the result of ongoing changes that were temporarily due to seasonal changes is not clear. However, the northwestward waves were expected to be a major source of erosion. Because of this, continue to observe the terrain and the local ocean circulation studies will be required.
