  • During past 20 years we have witnessed brilliant advances in major components of computer system, including CPU, memory, network device and HDD. Among these components, in spite of its tremendous advance in capacity, the HDD is the most performance dragging device until now and there is little affirmative forecasting that this problem will be resolved in the near future. We present a new approach to solve this problem using the NAND Flash memory. Researches utilizing Flash memory as storage medium are abundant these days, but almost all of them are targeted to mobile or embedded devices. Our research aims to develop the NAND Flash memory based storage system enough even for enterprise level server systems. This paper present structural and operational mechanism to overcome the weaknesses of existing NAND Flash memory based storage system, and its evaluation.

  • Recently, NAND flash based storage devices are being used as a storage device in various fields through hiding the limitations of NAND flash memory and maximizing the advantages. In particular, those storage devices contain a software layer called Flash Translation Layer(FTL) to hide the "erase-before-write" characteristics of NAND flash memory. FTL includes the metadata for managing the data requested from host. That metadata is stored in internal memory because metadata is very frequently accessed data for processing the requests from host. Thus, if the power-loss occurs, all data in memory is lost. So metadata management scheme is necessary to store the metadata periodically and to load the metadata in the initialization step. Therefore we proposed the scheme which satisfies the core requirements for metadata management and efficient operation. And we verified the efficiency of proposed scheme by experiments.

  • Due to advantages of NAND flash memory such as non-volatility, low access latency, low energy consumption, light weight, small size and shock resistance, it has become a better alternative over traditional magnetic disk drives, and has been widely used. Traditional DBMSs including mobile DBMSs may run on flash memory without any modification by using Flash Translation Layer (FTL), which emulates a random access block device to hide the characteristics of flash memory such as "erase-before-update". However, most existing FTLs are optimized for file systems, not for DBMSs, and traditional DBMSs are not aware of them. Also, traditional DBMSs do not consider the characteristics of flash memory. In this paper, we propose a flash-conscious storage system for DBMSs that utilizes flash memory as a main storage medium, and carefully put the characteristics of flash memory into considerations. The proposed flash-conscious storage system exploits log records to avoid costly update operations. It is shown that the proposed storage system outperforms the state.

  • The DBMS are widely used in embedded systems. The flash memory is used as a storage device of a embedded system. The optimizer of existing database system assumes that the storage device is disk. There is overhead to overwrite on flash memory unlike disk. The block of flash memory should be erased before write. Due to this reason, query optimization model based on disk does not adequate for flash-aware database. Especially embedded system should minimize the consumption of energy, but consumes more energy because of excessive erase operations. This paper proposes new energy based cost model of embedded database and shows the comparison between disk based cost model and energy based cost model.

  • As the development of an information technique, gradually, mobile device is going to be miniaturized and operates at high speed. By such the requirements, the devices using a flash memory as a storage media are increasing. The flash memory consumes low power, is a small size, and has a fast access time like the main memory. But the flash memory must erase for recording and the erase cycle is limited. JFFS is a representative filesystem which reflects the characteristics of the flash memory. JFFS to be consisted of LSF structure, writes new data to the flash memory in sequential, which is not related to a file size. Mounting a filesystem or an error recovery is achieved through the sequential approach. Therefore, the mounting delay time is happened according to the file system size. This paper proposes a MJFFS to use a multi-checkpoint information to manage a mass flash file system efficiently. A MJFFS, which improves JFFS, divides a flash memory into the block for suitable to the block device, and stores file information of a checkpoint structure at fixed interval. Therefore mounting and error recovery processing reduce efficiently a number of filesystem access by collecting a smaller checkpoint information than capacity of actual files. A MJFFS will be suitable to a mobile device owing to accomplish fast mounting and error recovery using advantage of log foundation filesystem and overcoming defect of JFFS.

  • Recently the mobile DBMS (Database Management System) is popular to store and manage large data in a mobile device. Especially, the research and development about mobile storage structure and querying method for navigation map data in a mobile device have been performed. The performance of the mobile DBMS in which random data accesses are most queries if the NAND flash memory is used as storage media of the DBMS is degraded. The reason is that the performance of flash memory is good in writing sequentially but bad in writing randomly as the features of the NAND flash memory. So, new storage structure and querying policies of the mobile DBMS are needed in the mobile DBMS in which a flash memory is used as storage media. In this paper, we have studied the policy of the database page management to enhance the performance of the frequent random update and applied this policy to the navigation-specialized mobile DBMS which supports incremental map update. And also we have evaluated the performance of this policy by experiments.

  • In this paper device driver for camera capture in hand held mobile system is implemented based on microsoft windows CE operating system. We also study the storage device driver based on the FAT fie system by using NAND flash memory as a storage device. We use the MBA2440 PDA board for implementing the hardware for image capture by using CMOS camera module producted by PixelPlus company. This camera module has VGA $640{\times}480$ pixel resolution. We also make application program which can be cooperated with the device driver for testing its performance, for example image capture speed and quality of captured image. We check that the application can be cooperated well not only with the device driver for camera capture but also with the device driver for FAT file system designed especially for the NAND flash memory.

  • Recently, with the advance of wireless internet and the frequent use of mobile devices, demand for LBS(Location Based Service) is increasing, and research is required on spatial indexes for the storage and maintenance of spatial data to provide efficient LBS in mobile device environments. In addition, the use of flash memory as an auxiliary storage device is increasing in order to store large spatial data in a mobile terminal with small storage space. However, the application of existing spatial indexes to flash-memory lowers index performance due to the frequent updates of nodes. To solve this problem, research is being conducted on flash-memory based spatial indexes, but the efficiency of such spatial indexes is lowered by low utilization of buffer and flash-memory space. Accordingly, in order to solve problems in existing flash-memory based spatial indexes, this paper proposed FR-Tree (Flash-Memory based R-Tree) that uses the node compression technique and the delayed write operation technique. The node compression technique of FR-Tree increased the utilization of flash-memory space by compressing MBR(Minimum Bounding Rectangle) of spatial data using relative coordinates and MBR size. And, the delayed write operation technique reduced the number of write operations in flash memory by storing spatial data in the buffer temporarily and reflecting them in flash memory at once instead of reflecting the insert, update and delete of spatial data in flash-memory for each operation. Especially, the utilization of buffer space was enhanced by preventing the redundant storage of the same spatial data in the buffer. Finally, we perform ed various performance evaluations and proved the superiority of FR-Tree to the existing spatial indexes.

  • Existing flash storage devices such as universal flash storage and solid state disk support command queuing to improve storage I/O bandwidth. Command queuing allows multiple read/write requests to be pending in a device queue. Because multi-channel and multi-way architecture of flash storage devices can handle multiple requests simultaneously, command queuing is an indispensable technique for utilizing parallel architecture. However, command queuing can be harmful to the latency of fsync system call, which is critical to application responsiveness. We propose a dynamic queue depth adaptation technique, which reduces the queue depth if user application is expected to send fsync calls. Experiments show that the proposed technique reduces the fsync latency by 79% on average compared to the original scheme.

  • With the rapid growth of mobility technology, the industrial sector is demanding storage devices that can reliably process data from various equipment and sensors in vehicles. NAND flash memory is being utilized as a storage device in mobility environments because it has the advantages of low power and fast data processing speed as well as strong external shock resistance. However, flash memory is characterized by data corruption due to long-term exposure to high temperatures. Therefore, a dedicated system for temperature management is required in mobility environments where high temperature exposure due to weather or external heat sources such as solar radiation is frequent. This paper designs a dedicated temperature management system for managing storage device temperature in a mobility environment. The designed temperature management system is a hybrid of traditional air cooling and water cooling technologies. The cooling method is designed to operate adaptively according to the temperature of the storage device, and it is designed not to operate when the temperature step is low to improve energy efficiency. Finally, experiments were conducted to analyze the temperature difference between each cooling method and different heat dissipation materials, proving that the temperature management policy is effective in maintaining performance.
