  • In this study, oil palm biomass such as empty fruit bunch (EFP) and palm kernel shell (PKS) was used as raw materials for making pellets. EFB and PKS are valuable lignocellulosic biomass that can be used for various purposes. If EFB and PKS are used as alternative raw materials for making pellets instead of wood, wood could be saved for making pulps or other value-added products. In order to explore their combustion characteristics, EFB and PKS were analyzed using thermal gravimetric analyzer (TGA) with ultimate and proximate analyses. From the TGA results, thermal decomposition of EFB and PKS occurred in the range of 280 to $400^{\circ}C$ through devolatilization and combustion of fixed carbon. After $400^{\circ}C$, their combustion were stabilized with combustion of residual lignin and char. PKS contained more fixed carbons and less ash contents than EFB, which indicated that PKS could be more active in combustion than EFB.

  • Solar energy is one of the most promising options for renewable energy and biomass is one of them. One of the main biomass sources, sugarcane bagasse, is produced annually in more than hundreds of nations worldwide exceeding 4.25 billion tons. To dry a 900-mm deep fixed bed of wet sugarcane bagasse, a solar air heater with a collector area of 2 m2 was installed. Between October 10th to 19th in Gwangju, South Korea, a 9-day drying period, the solar collector received a total of 496,145 kJ of solar radiation. During this time, 54.5 kg of water was extracted from 133 kg of wet sugarcane bagasse (average green moisture content of 47.6%w.b.). The estimated net heat from the evaporation of water removed during the dying period accounted for approximately 27% of the total solar radiation on the solar collector.

  • Our present study, we impregnated Al-Fe-Mg-Si (NFM) nanocomposites having various concentrations 0, 1000, 3000, and 5000 mg/L in biomass in order to make carbonized biomass. We characterized the properties of the impregnated samples through thermogravimetric/differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA), pore distribution, scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The best results were observed for a NFM nanocomposites concentration of 5000 mg/L. After the first heat treatment, carbonization, and activation processes, the fixed carbon ratio and iodine adsorptivity were increased by 21.89% and 368 mg/g, 23.98% and 475 mg/g, 26.40% and 238 mg/g, respectively. The remove rate of malodorous and VOCs were that the sample shows good removal capabilities. From above results, our sample could be used for the removal of noxious and malodorous gases and for the purification of wastewater.

  • In this study, Catalytic reforming with vapor and biomass gasification was simultaneously performed in a same fixed bed reactor at $600-800^{\circ}C$. Light gases were produced from reformation of the tar (fuel gases) in biomass gasification by using limonite and dolomite, as catalysts. Hydrogen and carbon dioxide are main components in light gases. Hydrogen yields increased with temperature increasing in the range of $650-800^{\circ}C$, because the water shift reaction was promoted by catalyst. The yield of hydrogen gas was increased about 160% under catalyst with the mixture of limonite and dolomite comparing to limonite only.

  • The fixed bed gasification reactor with 1 m hight and 10.2 cm diameter was utilized for the hydrogen production from biomass wastes. Lauan sawdust was used for non-catalytic and catalytic gasification reaction as a sample in the fixed bed reactor. The fixed bed temperature and catalyst are the major variables affecting the process operation. Thus, the effect of fixed bed temperature and the catalysts on gas composition were studied at the temperature range from $400^{\circ}C$ to $700^{\circ}C$. The yield of hydrogen was increased at higher temperature in the fixed bed reaction. Fractions of hydrogen, carbon monoxide and methane gas in the product gas increased when sodium carbonate ($Na_2CO_3$) and potassium carbonate ($K_2CO_3$) catalysts were used. Furthermore, sodium carbonate catalyst was more effective to obtain higher hydrogen yield compared to potassium carbonate catalyst.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of the hydraulic retention time (HRT) and organic loading rate (OLR) on microbial characteristics and treatment efficiency in sewage treatment using aerated submerged biological filter (ASBF) reactor. This reactor combines biodegradation of organic substrates by fixed biomass with a physical separation of biomass by filtration in a single reactor. Both simulated wastewater and domestic wastewater were used as feed solutions. The experimental conditions were a temperature of 17 to $27^{\circ}C$, a hydraulic retention time of 1 to 9hr, an organic loading rate of 0.47 to $3.84kg\;BOD/m^3{\cdot}day$ in ASBF reactor. This equipment could obtain a stable effluent quality in spite of high variation of influent loading rate. Total biomass concentration. biofilm thickness and biofilm mass increased an exponential function according to the increasing OLR. The relationships between water content and biofilm density were in inverse proportion. The percentage of backwash water to influent flow was almost 9%. The separation efficiency of biomass was the percentage of 91 to 92 in ASBF reactor. The sludge production rates in feed solutions of simulated wastewater and domestic wastewater were 0.14~0.26 kg VSS/kg BODrem, 0.43~0.48 kg VSS/kg BODrem, respectively.

  • This paper discussed the shape effect of ceramic support carrier in order to facilitate biomass immobilization. The shape of ceramic support carrier was modified hollow pipe type into hollow gear type. After seeding, microorganisms were attached in crevices where protection from shear forces or surfaces where easy to contact with support carrier surface. In case of hollow gear type carrier, initial attachment rate was faster than that of hollow pipe type and obtained thick biofilm. Synthetic wastewater(COD:75~880 mg/L, organic loading rate:0.36~4.22 kgCOD/㎥.d) was treated aerobic fixed bed biofilm reactor where 100% of the volume was filled with the ceramic carrier. COD removal efficiency of reactor filled with gear type support carrier was a little high withing 70 days, and then showed similar removal efficiency. It was found that highly loaded operation with up to 4.22 kgCOD/㎥.d was possible in both reactor. Total biomass amounts of pipe type was higher than gear type, however, attached biomass of gear type was higher than that of pipe type.
