KRISO (Korea Research Institute of Ship & Ocean Engineering) started a project to develop the core algorithms for autonomous intervention using an underwater robot in 2017. This paper introduces the development of the robot platform for the core algorithms, which is an ROV (Remotely Operated Vehicle) type with one 7-function manipulator. Before the detailed design of the robot platform, the 7E-MINI arm of the ECA Group was selected as the manipulator. It is an electrical type, with a weight of 51 kg in air (30 kg in water) and a full reach of 1.4 m. To design a platform with a small size and light weight to fit in a water tank, the medium-size manipulator was placed on the center of platform, and the structural analysis of the body frame was conducted by ABAQUS. The robot had an IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit), a DVL (Doppler Velocity Log), and a depth sensor for measuring the underwater position and attitude. To control the robot motion, eight thrusters were installed, four for vertical and the rest for horizontal motion. The operation system was composed of an on-board control station and operation S/W. The former included devices such as a 300 VDC power supplier, Fiber-Optic (F/O) to Ethernet communication converter, and main control PC. The latter was developed using an ROS (Robot Operation System) based on Linux. The basic performance of the manufactured robot platform was verified through a water tank test, where the robot was manually operated using a joystick, and the robot motion and attitude variation that resulted from the manipulator movement were closely observed.

The effects of drying temperature on drying characteristics of soybeans with different grain sizes [6.0 (S), 7.5 (M), and 9.0 mm (L) (${\pm}0.2$)] with 25.0% (${\pm}0.8$) initial moisture content were studied. Drying temperatures varied at 25, 35, and $45^{\circ}C$, with a constant air velocity (13.2 m/s). Thin-layer drying models were applied to describe the drying process of soybeans. The Midilli-Kucuk model showed the best fit ($R^2$ >0.99). Based on the model parameters, drying time to achieve the target moisture content (10%) was successfully estimated. Drying time was strongly dependent on the size of soybeans and the drying temperature. The effective moisture diffusivity ($D_{eff}$) was estimated by the diffusion model based on Fick's second law. $D_{eff}$ values increased as grain size and drying temperature increased due to the combined effect of high temperatures and high drying rates, which promote compact tissue. Deff values of S, M, and L estimated were in the range of $0.83{\times}10^{-10}$ to $1.51{\times}10^{-10}m^2/s$, $1.17{\times}10^{-10}$ to $2.17{\times}10^{-10}m^2/s$, and $1.53{\times}10^{-10}$ to $2.95{\times}10^{-10}m^2/s$, respectively, whereas activation energy ($E_a$) based on drying temperature showed no significant differences in the size of soybeans.
Portable embedded systems have recently become smaller in size and offer a variety of junctions for users. These systems require high performance processors to handle the many functions and also a small battery to fit inside the system. However, due to its size, the battery life has become a major issue. It is important to have both efficient power design and management for each function, while optimizing processor voltage and clock frequency in order to extend the battery life of the system. In this paper, we calculated the efficiency of power in optimizing power rail. This system has two microprocessors. One is used to play music and movie files while the other is for DMB. In order to reduce power consumption, the DMB microprocessor is turned of while music or videos are played. Lastly, DVFS is applied to the processor in the system to reduce power consumption. Experimental results of the implemented system have resulted in reduced power consumption.
This study was conducted to compare the commercial noodle flours (n=8) of each milling company in Korea. Eight noodle flour samples were classified into two types of flours, all-purpose flour (AF, n=4) and premium noodle flour (PF, n=4) and tested using general component analysis. Texture assessment and sensory test for doughs and noodles were performed. The dough strength was positively correlated with lower ash content, smaller particle size and longer formation time. Sensory evaluation found that weaker cooked noodle strength correlated with higher scores in preference and softness. As a result, it can be suggested that PF is better than AF in noodle making because PF has lower ash content and smaller particle size than AF. As such, flour characteristics that produce noodle flour of uniform quality can be obtained by combining flours with the above processing characteristics to fit the qualities desired.
GPUs are stream processors based on multi-cores, which can process large data with a high speed and a large memory bandwidth. Furthermore, GPUs are less expensive than multi-core CPUs. Recently, usage of GPUs in general purpose computing has been wide spread. The CUDA architecture from Nvidia is one of efforts to help developers use GPUs in their application domains. In this paper, we propose techniques to parallelize a skyline algorithm which uses a simple nested loop structure. In order to employ the CUDA programming model, we apply our optimization techniques to make our skyline algorithm fit into the performance restrictions of the CUDA architecture. According to our experimental results, we improve the original skyline algorithm by 80% with our optimization techniques.
Korean isolate, porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (KPEDV-9) was adapted through serial passages in vero cell. The viral yield reached up to $10^{5-6}$$TCID_{50}/ml$ at the passage level of 90th. The cell adapted virus was characterized through genetic and morphological examinations. The RNA extracted from virus infected cell revealed the presence of RNA band with molecular size of >20Kb. The electron microscopic examination on purified virus showed the pleomorphic appearance of enveloped particles with 5-10nm surface projections, which fit with the shape of coronavirus. The etiological survey on swine diarrhea by immunofluorescence test(FA) indicated 17.5% positive rate on the PEDV infection. In addition, the incidence were detected both in piglets within two weeks old as well as fattening pigs. Serological survey by ELISA revealed the overall 45% positive result, thus, indicating the PEDV infection are widespread throughout this country.
The checkpointing schemes should reduce the process delay through managing the checkpoints of each node to fit the network load to enhance the performance of the process running on the cluster system that write the checkpoints into its global stable storage. For this reason, a cluster system with single IO space on a distributed RAID chooses a suitable checkpointng scheme to get the maximum IO performance and the best rollback recovery efficiency. In this paper, we improved the striped checkpointing scheme with dynamic stripe group size by adapting to the network bandwidth variation at the point of checkpointing. To analyze the performance of the multi striped checkpointing scheme, we applied Linpack HPC benchmark with MPI on our own cluster system with maximum 512 virtual nodes. The benchmark results showed that the multistriped checkpointing scheme has better performance than the striped checkpointing scheme on the checkpoint writing efficiency and rollback recovery at heavy system load.
To understand the basic physics underlying large spatial fluctuations of intensity and Doppler shift, we have investigated the dynamical charctersitics of the transition region of the quiet sun by analyzing a raster scan of high resolution UV spectral band containing H Lyman lines and a S VI line. The spectra were taken from a quiet area of $100'\times100'$ located near the disk center by SUMER on board SOHO. The spectral band ranges from 906 A to 950 A with spatial and spectral resolution of 1v and $0.044 {\AA}$, respectively. The parameters of individual spectral lines were determined from a single Gaussian fit to each spectral line. Then, spatial correlation analyses have been made among the line parameters. Important findings emerged from the present analysis are as follows. (1) The integrated intensity maps of the observed area of H I 931 line $(1\times10^4 K)$ and S VI 933 line $(2\times10^5 K)$ look very smilar to each other with the same characterstic size of 5". An important difference, however, is that the intensity ratio of brighter network regions to darker cell regions is much larger in S VI 933 line than that in H I 931 line. (2) Dynamical features represented by Doppler shifts and line widths are smaller than those features seen in intensity maps. The features are found to be changing rapidly with time within a time scale shorter than the integration time, 110 seconds, while the intensity structure remains nearly unchanged during the same time interval. (3) The line intensity of S VI is quite strongly correlated with that of H I lines, but the Doppler shift correlation between the two lines is not as strong as the intensity correlation. The correlation length of the intensity structure is found to be about 5.7' (4100 km), which is at least 3 times larger than that of the velocity structure. These findings support the notion that the basic unit of the transition region of the quiet sun is a loop-like structure with a size of a few $10^3 km$, within which a number of unresolved smaller velocity structures are present.

The raw water DOC contained 39.3% of hydrophilics, 42.9% of hydriophobic, and 17.8% of transphilic. The hydrophobic fraction in this raw water was mostly fulvic acid. Fulvic acid comprised of 62% and the rest was humic acid(38%). There was more carboxylic acid functional group(64%) than phenolic group(36%). HPI-N and HPI-C comprised of 17% and 22% in the hydrophilic portion, respectively. The fouling mechanisms on the membrane surface and into its porous structure were analyzed in terms of several kinetic models. In order to analyze the fouling kinetics, the various kinetic models described in this paper were used to fit the experimental results. The kinetic models and kinetic constants obtained for each operation condition. The permeate flux was rapidly declined by simultaneous pore blocking and cake formation. Also, the permeate flux declined with decreasing internal pore size resulted from organic deposition into the membrane pore. The results of the membrane fouling test using UF membrane according to NOM fractions. HPI-N caused more fouling than HPI-C. Humic acid caused more fouling than fulvic acid probably due to higher adsorption capacity. Since humic acid has higher adsorption capacity than fulvic acid, it would be more adsorbed onto the membrane pores.
The flood forecasting model currently used in Korea calculates the runoff of basin using the lumped rainfall-runoff model and estimates the river level using the river and reservoir routing models. The lumped model assumes homogeneous drainage zones in the basin. Therefore, it can not consider various spatial characteristics in the basin. In addition, the rainfall data used in lumped model also has the same limitation because of using the point scale rainfall data. To overcome the limitations as mentioned above, many researchers have studied to apply the distributed rainfall-runoff model to flood forecasting system. In this study, to apply the Grid-based Rainfall-Runoff Model (GRM) to the Korean flood forecasting system, the optimal resolution is determined by analyzing the difference of the results of the runoff according to the various resolutions. If the grid size is to small, the computation time becomes excessive and it is not suitable for applying to the flood forecasting model. Even if the grid size is too large, it does not fit the purpose of analyzing the spatial distribution by applying the distributed model. As a result of this study, the optimal resolution which satisfies the accuracy of the bsin runoff prediction and the calculation speed suitable for the flood forecasting was proposed. The accuracy of the runoff prediction was analyzed by comparing the Nash-Sutcliffe model efficiency coefficient (NSE). The optimal resolution estimated from this study will be used as basic data for applying the distributed rainfall-runoff model to the flood forecasting system.
