An Analysis of the Growing Trend on the Major Fisheries of the Coastal and Adjacent-Sea in Korea (연근해주요어업의 성장성분석(II))

  • This study is an analysis of the growing trend from 1971 to 1980 on the four major fisheries in Korea; large powered purse seine, anchovy drag net, two boats large trawl and one boat large trawl. The main purpose of this study is to find some solutions against the problems which these fisheries are faced with, through the analysis of the growing trend of income, capital structure and main ratios of finance. According to the result of the analysis, the problems are as following: \circled1 Revenues per vessel was decreased when catches per vessel was decreased in 1979, 1980. therefore the increase ratio of the revenues per vessel was weakened from 1979. \circled2 Catches per vessel was decreased from 1979 in spite of the increase of gross cathes in its field. \circled3 Production costs in fishing, such as the cost of wages, fuels and repairs, was steadily up year by year. \circled4 Profitability was deteriorated from 1978. \circled5 productivity was lower from 1978. \circled6 Stability was lower from 1978. The solutions out of the above problems are as follows; \circled1 Fisheries resources must be fostered. \circled2 The numbers of vessels should be reduced according to the fisheries resources. \circled3 The precise amount of resources should be dynamically estimated. \circled4 The fishermen must be educated to reduce fishing cost such as the cost of fuels and repairs, etc. \circled5 The old vessels should be replaced. \circled6 The production efficiency should be promoted. \circled7 The rate of interest should be cut down to reduce financial cost.

European Union System of Fisheries Management Based on Information and Communication Technology (유럽연합의 ICT기반 수산업 구조개선 현황)

  • The fishing industry in Europe has faced environmental, economic, and social challenges. Since the early 2000s, a key tool in addressing these challenges has been information and communication technology (ICT), which has helped to modernize fishery systems in European Union (EU) countries. The ICT used in EU fisheries can be categorized broadly as 1) macro-technologies such as satellite and other remote sensing technologies in combination with geographical information systems, 2) micro-technologies adapted for fishing vessels such as echo sounders, ship navigation devices, and mobile communication devices to connect fishermen and consumers, and 3) onshore micro-technologies related to internet technology and mobile devices. The European Monitoring Center on Change has used ICT to effectively manage fisheries bio-resources. This use of ICT has contributed to the development of sustainable and competent fisheries in the 2000s, even though the knowledge-sharing practices involved are contrary to the long tradition of autonomy within the fishery industry.

  • This study involved 45 man-smoker outpatients of Han-lim oriental medical hospital from Feb. 1, 1998 to May 31, 1998. The results of this study are as follows ; 1. In sex distinction, the average age was 51.9 years with persons aged 25 to 83 years. 40's and 50's are the most as 12 persons (26.7%) respectively, and in order of the next 30's and 60's are 7 persons (15.55%) respectively, more than 71 years are 5 persons (11.10%), less than 30 years are 2 persons. 2. In occupational distinction, farmers are the most as 20 persons (44.4%), and then common desk workers are 11 persons (24.44%), fishermen are 8 persons (17.78%), the others are 6 persons (13.34%) in that order. 3. In the distinction of chief complaint, cough 39 persons (88.67 %), sputum 29 persons (64.44%), dyspnea 13 persons (28.89%), loss of appetite 7 persons (15,56%), chest pain 5 persons (11.11%) in that order 4. the effects after dosage are as follows ; favorable turn of sputum is the most 89.66%, cough 64.10%, chest pain 60%, dypsnea 53.85%, loss of appetite 28.57%. As a whole, more than 68.32% was improved. As the above, it was thought that Kwarujisiltang administration was evidently effective on a chronic disease of the respiratory organs.

Tracing the origin of fish without hatchery information: genetic management of stock enhancement for mangrove red snapper (Lutjanus argentimaculatus) in Taiwan

  • Stock enhancement is considered to be a valuable approach for restoring fishery resources. Because no specific official institution in Taiwan is responsible for the production of fry, the released fry are purchased directly from the private sector. However, fishermen from the private industry have not established a genetic background, so the genetic composition for each batch of released fry is unclear. Mangrove red snapper (Lutjanus argentimaculatus), a prominent species released in Taiwan, was collected after its official release. One hundred and two field samples were compared with four batches of hatchery fry (n = 685) by using a microsatellite-based multiplex PCR assay. Four of the field samples (3.9%; 4/102) were revealed to be from a fish farm and most likely from a single batch. This study revealed that wild mangrove red snappers are genetically different from those originating from farms, and their origins can be traced through molecular markers, even without information on breeding stocks.

Estimating the Abundance and Fishing Mortality of Pacific Cod Gadus macrocephalus during the Spawning Season in Jinhae Bay, Korea, Using a Mark-Recapture Method (표지방류 조사를 통한 거제 외포 주변해역 대구(Gadus macrocephalus) 자원량과 어획사망률 추정)

  • We estimated the population size and fishing mortality of Pacific cod Gadus macrocephalus during the spawning season in waters off Woipo, Geoje Island, Korea, using a mark-recapture method. We marked and released 51 cod>50 cm in total length; six were recaptured by local fishermen during the period from December 15 to 31, 2009. The estimated population size was ca. 180,000 and the fishing mortality of the exploitable cod was 26%. Although we could assume a closed population due to the short survey period, we evaluated the uncertainty in the estimates by applying bootstrap resampling because the sample size was small. The estimated 95% confidence interval was 94,000-568,000 for the population size and 8-49% for fishing mortality. Our study demonstrated that the application of mark-recapture methods and bootstrap resampling can be useful in stock assessment for fisheries management in Korea, but requires a larger sample size, spatially extensive coverage, and sophisticated mark-recapture models based on a refined sampling design for reliable stock assessment and biological reference points in sustainable cod management.

  • Fuel consumption in fisheries is a primary concern due to environmental effects and costs to fishermen. Much research has been carried out to reduce the fuel consumption related to fishing operations. The fuel consumption of fishing gear during fishing operation is generally related to hydrodynamic resistance on the gear. This research demonstrates a new approach using numerical methods to reduce fuel consumption. By designing the fishing gear using drawing software, the whole and partial resistance force on the gear can be calculated as a result of simulations. The simulation results will suggest suitable materials or gear structure for reducing the hydrodynamic forces on the gear while maintaining the performance of the gear. This research will helpful to reduce the $CO_2$ emissions from fishing operations and lead to reduce fishing costs due to fuel savings.

  • It is essential to provide good environment for juvenile fish to grow and spawn in order to keep reproduction mechanism of fisheries resources. However, harvesting juvenile fish deprives adult fish of the opportunity to reproduce, thereby changing self-regulating renewable resources into non-renewable ones and preventing sustainable harvesting as well as reducing fishers' income. We reviewed the catch status of Korea on juvenile mackerel and analyzed how reducing the catch ratio of juvenile mackerel may affect the spawning stock and Korean fishermen's revenue. In addition, we analyzed the problem of caching juvenile mackerel in Korean fisheries and current efforts to protect and reduce the catch ratio of juvenile mackerel in Korea. Furthermore, we suggested future efforts to protect juvenile mackerel. The result of the study showed that reducing the catch ratio of juvenile mackerel from 44.4% to 30.0% would increase fishers' revenue by 60.6 billion KRW. We suggest the changing of purse seine fishery's catching methods from night operation to day operation, relocation of fishing vessels to move to other fishing grounds when fishing vessels meet high density of juvenile mackerel, and consumers' clever choice of consuming adult mackerel in order to accelerate the move toward protecting juvenile mackerel in Korea.

  • Today, administration management of fishing industry is formed by paper documents. So, it is suffered damage and loss concern by the long-term storage. when the new informations is renewed, much of manpower and time are wasted also. In addition, it has caused confusion to by used coordinate system which is not been consistent. To build a national standardized information system of fishing banks, in this study, fishing map DB and system based on GIS is constructed for fishery right area of JeollaNamdo (Mokpo city and other 14 counties) which has 55% of fishing permissions of Korea. Then administration management of fishing industry is constructed computerization for the user that business processing and for fishermen to improve their convenience. Also, It will be possible to link another system.

  • This study is to make legal suggestions concerning the legal status of the physical therapists and the their clinics io Korea. This study compares the legal status of the physical therapists with that of the optical and dental technicians, and reviews the current system of the American physical therapeutic clinic. 1. Under the supervision of the doctor or dentist' in Article 1 of Law concerning the Medical Technician should be deleted or changed into 'by the request of the doctor or dentist'. A new independent law should be mode only fer the physical therapist from the general law that stipulates the legal status of other similar medical technicians. 3. The legal status of the physical therapeutic clinic should be stipulated in the regulations for the application of the law as that of the dental technician does. The modification of the medical services, the medical expences, waiting time, the easy access to the clinic of farmers, fishermen, urban laborers, and handicapped people, and the development of the area of the physical therapy.

  • Korea has recently joined the Development Assistance Committee (DAC) and currently implements a policy of vastly expanding the size of ODA. Indonesia has highly possessed growth potential in terms of vast quantity of natural resources, cheap labor force, and large local markets. Researches on how to support the Special Territory of Aceh province were made in this study. There is a necessity to increase the capacity of matter to the fishermen, and support facilities and infrastructure assistance to support the safety system in the sea.
