Species Composition and Seasonal Variations of Fishes Collected by Set Net in Coastal Waters of Gijang, Korea (기장 연안 정치망에 어획된 어류의 종조성 및 계절변동)

  • Fish catches by a set net from January 2007 to November 2009 were analyzed to assess fish species composition and seasonal variations in the coast of Gijang, Korea. Over 389 kg fish representing 78 species, 45 families and 17 orders were collected during three years of the study. Dominant species were jack mackerel Trachurus japonicus, anchovy Engraulis japonicus and herring Clupea palasii, and these three species comprised 67.3% of the total number of individuals and 60.7% of the total biomass. Size distribution of the dominant species for jack mackerel, anchovy and herring ranged from 2.2 cm to 22.6 cm, from 2.5 cm to 14.8 cm, from 4.0 cm to 29.0 cm in fork length, respectively. Anchovy was the only species that occurred throughout all seasons in the Gijang coast. Generally, species richness was highest in spring (April to June) when sea temperature began to increase.

Simulation of undewater irradiance distribution in coastal squid jigging vessel using the LED and metal halide fishing lamp combination (LED와 메탈헬라이드 집어등을 겸용한 연안 오징어채낚기 어선의 수중 방사조도 분포 시뮬레이션)

  • This study is aimed to analyze the three-dimensional underwater irradiance using an optical simulation software and to clarify the propriety and operation method under considering luminous intensity distribution of the luring lamp and penetrability in the seawater, when we use the light diffuser type 300W high powered LED and the metal halide lamp (MHL) on a coastal squid jigging vessel in the 10-ton class, simultaneously. For their attenuation characteristics of each wavelength in relation to the sea, LED lamp was to be effective in the 1.9-fold at 50 m depth and 2.1-fold at 80 m for underwater irradiance more than MHL according to the power consumption. In addition, the underwater irradiance distribution using the LED and MHL combination was rather increased even when reducing total power usage up to 20% depending on the simulation with changing the configuration and lighting angle of the lamp. These results can be utilized as an evaluation method of the operation and performance of the LED lamp according to adjusting its arrangement and lighting angle.

Species Composition and Distribution of Set-net Catches on the Coast of Dapo, Geoje Island (거제도 다포 연안 정치망 어획물의 종조성 및 주요 어종의 분포 특성)

  • We analyzed annual and seasonal variations in fish species composition and distribution patterns using both daily catch and quantitative analysis data collected from a set-net fishery over a period of two years (2011-2012) on the coast of Dapo, Geoje Island. Set-net fishing season in this area is from May to November, and the annual yield based on the daily catch data was 171,412 kg in 2011, and 102,611 kg in 2012. In total, there were 46 species (belonging to 36 families and 12 orders) in 2011, and 41 species (belonging to 25 families and 9 orders) in 2012. The dominant species in terms of numbers were Trachurus japonicus, Engraulis japonicus, Clupea pallasii, Scomber japonicus, and Sphyraena pinguis. The range in fork length for T. japonicus and E. japonicus was from 3.2 to 23.9 cm, and from 2.6 to 13.3 cm, respectively. The fork length of recruiting juveniles to the Dapo set-net fishing ground ranged from 4.6 to 7.8 cm (median) for T. japonicus, and from 4.1 to 5.0 cm (median) for E. japonicus. The fact that most of the fish caught from the two species were at immature growth stages implies that the coast of Dapo can act as a nursery area for these migratory species.

Changes in Availability of Tuna Species Due to ENSO Events in the Pacific Ocean (태평양 ENSO 현상에 따른 다랑어 이용도 변화)

  • This paper describes the relationship between the distribution of tuna and ENSO events in the Pacific Ocean which have occurred on a regular basis of 3-5 year terms. Annual catches and catch ratios of skipjack Funa, Katswonus pelamis and yellowfin tuna, Thunnus albacares largely increased during El $Ni\~{n}o$ years, while it decreased during La $Ni\~{n}a$ years. However, the effect of El $Ni\~{n}o$ on the distribution of tuna seemed to be more significant to yellowfin tuna which usually occurr the upper thermocline depth increases due to the elevated thermocline in the Western and Central Pacific Ocean.

Spatial Distribution and Ecological Characteristics of Zostera marina and Zostera japonica in the Seomjin Estuary (섬진강 하구에 자생하는 잘피의 분포 현황 및 생태적 특성)

  • Among common estuarine submerged plants, seagrasses are the most extensively studied due to their ecological importance in estuarine ecosystems. Seagrass meadows are important biological habitats for a wide variety of marine animals and plants. They are a source of organic carbon for commercially important animals. Furthermore, seagrasses act as nutrient filters in estuarine and coastal marine ecosystems. As such, mapping the distribution of seagrass beds is important for management and conservation strategies. In order to survey the seagrass distribution within the Seomjin Estuary, We directly observed seagrass beds in Kwangyang and Hadong using SCUBA. The distribution area, species composition, morphology, density, biomass and productivity of seagrass meadows were examined. Seagrass meadows were distributed in the intertidal and subtidal zones of the Galsa tidal flats, and in the subtidal zone of the neighboring POSCO area. Patches of Zostera japonica was found at patches at the Galsa tidal flats intermediate point. The total estimated seagrass distribution area of the Seomjin Estuary was $1.84\;km^2$. Of the total, $1.83\;km^2$ was Zostera marina (eelgrass) and $0.01\;km^2$ was Zostera japonica (dwarf eelgrass). Zostera japonica was found in intertidal zones. Zostera marina was found from the intertidal to subtidal zones at a 2 m mean sea level (MSL) depth. The leaf productivity of Zostera marina was $4.47g\;DW\;m^{-2}\;day^{-1}$. The annual production of eelgrass was $1,632\;g\;DW\;m^{-2}\;yr^{-1}$, which corresponds to $731g\;C\;m^{-2}\;yr^{-1}$. The total production of eelgrass was $3,002\;tons\;DW\;yr^{-1}$, which corresponds to $1,343\;tons\;C\;yr^{-1}$.

Properties of aggregation and spatial distribution of fish in the South Sea of Korea using hydroacoustic data (수산음향기법의 주파수에 따른 남해안의 어류의 군집 및 공간분포 특징)

  • Properties of aggregation and spatial distribution of fish were examined based on three lines in the South Sea of Korea using three frequencies (18, 38, and 120 kHz) of a scientific echosounder. The vertical distribution of fish was displayed using acoustic biomass namely nautical area scattering coefficient (NASC). As a result, at 120 kHz high NASC showed from water surface to 20 meters in deep while at 18 and 38 kHz very high NASC presented in 70 ~ 90 meters in depth, especially at line 3. Among three lines, the line 2 had lowest NASC. The horizontal distribution of fish using three frequencies together exhibited high NASC between the eastern South Sea and center of South Sea. In especial, NASC ($801{\sim}1,920m^2/n{\cdot}mile^2$) was observed along coastal waters from Busan to Tongyeong, Geoje, and Namhae. In regard with the property of aggregation of fish schools, the volume back-scattering strength ($S_V$) of three lines presented close each other, however, the range of $S_V$ in the line 2 was shortest (-53.5 ~ -43.4 dB). The average distributional depth was deep in the order of L3 ($32.8{\pm}9.0m$), L1 ($45.2{\pm}9.5m$), L2 ($49.7{\pm}5.6m$). The average altitude was high in the order of L3 ($13.4{\pm}10.3m$), L1 ($17.0{\pm}12.6m$), L2 ($56.7{\pm}5.6m$). The average length, thickness, and area were large in the order of L1, L3, and L2. This means that small sized fish schools were distributed near water surface in the line 2 while relatively large and similar sized fish aggregations between line 1 and line 3 appeared however, fish schools at line 3 had lower distributional depth and smaller compared to those at line 1. Acoustic data were visualized for demonstrating the entire circumstances of survey area. Additionally, there was no correlation between acoustic and trawl results.

  • Competitive species have the same spatial distribution (habitat) and foraging behavior (niche), while non-competitive species have either different feeding behavior or spatial distribution. Therefore, ecological segregation among species of fish results rfom differences in foraging behavior and spatial distribution (Allen, 1984; Zhang 1988).   • The purpose of this study carried out to analyze production status, pricing trend and distribution status of landscape plants, so that it could predict the demand of landscape plants for the balance of supply and demand. The production amount of landscape plants made constantly increased. The annual output of shrubs increased more higher than that of trees. The prices of trees have raised consistently, but shrubs were susceptible to price fluctuations. And there were still many problems in the distribution structure. The landscaping work has focused on the metropolitan area. And large-scale nationwide projects were scheduled for coming years, so the demand of landscape plants was expected to expend. However, the lack of increase in production amounts of landscape plants, it is cause to supply problems. So, demand forecast was necessary to control the production of landscape plants.
