  • Abalone immortal cell lines can be used to study the physiological properties and disease mechanisms of abalone at the cellular and molecular level. As a first step for the final goal to establish abalone immortal cell lines, we examined various initial culture conditions for primary cell populations derived from Haliotis discus hannai radula tissue. The survival rate after cell isolation procedures using the enzymatic method was as low as $9.95{\pm}2.37%$. Based on three different experimental conditions for H. discus hannai radula-derived cell culture, we found that the salinity of the media and the presence of growth-promoting factors were important to support radula-derived primary cell populations during the initial culture. The growth factor-containing media adjusted to 35 psu salinity could induce 100% (8 out of 8 trials) initial cell attachment, and the rate of cell attachment reached 50-70%. The data obtained from this study will provide useful information for developing immortal cell lines from abalone species.

  • Abnormal oceanic conditions associated with the passage of typhoons are examined using hydrographic and satellite data 1990-2002. During the passage period of typhoons in the Korean waters, an abrupt decrease of sea surface temperature(SST) in range of 5 to 8 $^{\circ}$ was observed. The areas of SST decrease were an order of 100-200km, and the low SST lasted about 15-25 days after passage of typhoon. After passage of typhoon, the water temperatures in the surface mixed layer of 30m show negative anomalies for quite a long period. In addition, stratification parameters were substantially decreased and chlorophyll a density was rapidly increased.

  • Underwater acoustic positioning systems have been extensively used not only in surface position fixing but also in underwater position fixing. Recently, these systems have been applied in the field of installation and underwater inspection of offshore platforms etc. But in these systems are included the fixing errors as results of a signal with additive noise and irregular motion of vessel by ocean waves. To improve the accuracy of the position fixing a Kalman filter is applied to the supershort baseline (SSBL) acoustic positioning system with beacon mode in noise conditions. The position data obtained by the Kalman filter is compared with raw position data and it is confirmed in the simulation that the former is more accurate than the latter. And an indicator monitoring the filtering effect is described while ship's moving.

  • This study investigated the removal performance of a foam fractionator under seawater conditions. The foam fractionator was tested using a 3×3×3 factorial design for operating conditions by combining different solids concentrations (SS; 1, 5, and 10 mg·L-1), surface air velocities (SAV; 1.1, 1.5, and 2.1 cm·sec-1), and hydraulic residence times (HRT; 1, 3, and 6 min) at 16℃. Performance parameters such as daily solids removal rate and efficiency were measured, and a multi-regression model equation was developed accordingly. The daily solids removal rate and removal efficiency varied with the experimental conditions and ranged from 0.14-2.33 g-solids·m-3-air·day-1 and 8.9-96.7 %, respectively. Overall, the daily solids removal rate increased with increasing SS and SAV and decreasing HRT, whereas the removal efficiency increased with increasing SAV and HRT and decreasing SS. The daily solids removal rate (g-solids·m-3-air·day-1) of the foam fractionator for SAV (cm·sec-1), SS (mg·L-1) and HRT (min) were described by the following multi-regression model: Daily solids removal rate [f(z)]=-0.118+0.422SAV+0.094HRT+0.141SS (r2=0.873).

  • The forming of fishing ground and the population ecological characteristics of yellowtail, Seriola quinqueradiata, in the coastal waters off Gim-nyeong of Jeju Island were investigated. The stock of yellowtail, Seriola quinqueradiata, between Jeju Island and coastal areas of the East Sea is probably the same. Water temperature probably is a major factor for controlling distribution of yellowtails in deeper, offshore areas off Jeju Island. However, the major factor that determines aggregation of yellowtails in coastal areas of Jeju Island, especially off Gim-nyeong is probably strong tidal currents driven by distribution of yellowtails rather than hydrological conditions such as Yellowtails collected off Jeju Island were from 1 to 4yrs old and about 50% of them were $1^{-yr}$ old, probably indicating overfishing. Jack mackerel was the major prey item for yellowtails off Gim-nyeong from October to March, suggesting concurrence of the two species.

  • The relationships among long-term variation in catches of Spanish mackerel (Scomberomorus niphonius) and main food organism such as common mackerel (Scomber japonicus), anchovy (Engraulis japonicus), and oceanic condition in Korean waters were analyzed using 40 years of time-series data from 1971-2010. In the 1990s, oceanic conditions around the Korean peninsula shifted to a warmer regime with higher SST (sea surface temperature). The total catch of Spanish mackerel in Korean waters increased dramatically since the early 2000s, and main fishing ground form into South Sea in winter season from December to January. From the results of correlation analysis, we found a significant relationship between the Spanish mackerel catch and environmental factor such as SST, common mackerel and anchovy catch in Korean waters.

  • The subject of this study is limited to the market of producting and the analyzed the change of the supply structures, but the wide range of the study also contains the relationship present movement of consumption and the supply stuctures. To put it concretely, the present movement of the structre and the development of the market of producting are examined with the fisheries processing firms. The factors which dominate the structure of fisheries processing are; first, fisheries products as raw materials of processing; second, man-power; third, processing facilities and techniques; forth, a market where the products will be consumed. In particular, the conditions of supply of raw materials which are major factor have been worse and worse due to exhaustion of marine resources and so the capacity of fisheries production has been reduced. Furthermore, the conditions of manpower also are in trouble. Under the conditons, raw materials are imported largely and many companies try to make overseas enpansion for cheap manpower and raw materials. Particulaly, the relationship between consumption market and the structure of processing in a place of producton is analyzed newly. I try to show new logic that demands of consumption market are reflected strongerly to production with the development of consumption market and the rights of decision on the choice of raw materials and a processing item have been handed over to consumption market. In a word, I try to examined closely the new supply structure of fisheries products and the structure of consumption market through the analysis of the structure of processing in a place of production.

  • We have investigated lectin binding patterns in order to apply binding records of previous laboratory experiments to field settings before the first ourbreaks of harmful algal bloom (HAB). Although cells were grown under different conditions, the binding patterns were the same as in the control. In addition, culture days was not associated with the binding patterns, when compared with the control. In nature, this results suggest that ECA, HPA and WGA lectin are able to discriminate between C. polykrikoides and G. impudicum, as well as ECA and SBA have a capability as a tool for differentiating between C. polyrikoides and G. catenatum, although these species are closely similar under the light microscope fiexed with Lugol solution.
