Background: The objectives of this study were to establish a swimming capability model for largemouth bass using the FishXing (version 3) program, and to determine the swimming speed and feasibility of fish passage through a waterway tunnel. This modeling aimed to replicate the waterway tunnel connecting the Andong and Imha Reservoirs in South Korea, where there is a concern that largemouth bass may be able to pass through this structure. As largemouth bass are considered an invasive species, this spread could have repercussions for the local environment. Results: Flow regime of water through the waterway tunnel was calculated via the simulation of waterway tunnel operation, and the capability of largemouth bass to pass through the waterway tunnel was then estimated. The swimming speed and distance of the largemouth bass had a positive linear function with total length and negative linear function with the flow rate of the waterway tunnel. The passing rate of small-size largemouth bass (10-30 cm) was 0%at a flow of $10m^3/s$ due to rapid exhaustion from prolonged upstream swimming through the long (1.952 km) waterway tunnel. Conclusions: The results of FishXing showed that the potential passing rate of large size largemouth bass (>40 cm) through the waterway tunnel was greater than 10%; however, the passage of largemouth bass was not possible because of the mesh size ($3.4{\times}6.0cm$) of the pre-screening structures at the entrance of the waterway tunnel. Overall, this study suggests that the spread of largemouth bass population in the Imha Reservoir through the waterway tunnel is most likely impossible.

The aim of this study was to assess whether size-rank at the juvenile stage is associated with growth performance and sex ratio in olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus). Juveniles (mean body weight, $8.8{\pm}0.9\;g$) were selected from two age groups, with the high size-rank group (HSRG) fish in the upper 19.3-67.3% of 104 days post-hatching (dph) age group and the low size-rank group (LSRG) fish in the lower 9.0-55.7% of 116 dph age group. Triplicate groups of 100 fish were reared over 32 weeks. A heavier final body weight was observed in the HSRG ($360{\pm}12\;g$) compared to the LSRG ($315{\pm}9\;g$, P<0.05), whereas no differences in feed intake, feeding efficiency, and mortality were seen between the experimental groups. The percentage of females was significantly higher in the HSRG (51.7%) than in the LSRG (30.8%, P<0.05). In addition, a remarkable increase in growth was recorded in females, indicating that the relative frequency of females increased with a body weight increase. The results suggest that high size-rank juvenile olive flounder have better growth performance and a higher percentage of females, because females start growing faster than males before size grading occurs.

This thesis is the fundamental study on the adaptation of escape device for reducing small size of fish in set-net. The escape devices for experiments were made the grid-type devices with three different slit sizes (15, 20 and 25mm). The experiments of size selectivity on escape devices were conducted by using two kinds of species as black rockfish (Sebastes schlegeli) and sea perch (Lateolabrax maculatusi) in the experimental tank. The size selectivity curve was fitted by using a logistic function and the parameters of selectivity curve were estimated by a maximum likelihood method. In the results; 50% selection ranges for the grid-type escape devices with three different slit sizes were; a black rockfish was 13.30, 19.22 and 22.06cm and a sea perch was 17.64, 20.91 and 22.78cm, respectively. The 50% selection range of a black rockfish was wilder than a sea perch about 1.1~1.3 time. Therefore, the small size of fish are able to reduce by using the grid type escape device. However, the optimum slit size of grid should be decided to consider the size of target species and economics of catches.
Fish species composition and size frequency distribution of major species were analyzed using seasonal samples collected by an otter trawl in the coastal water off Uljin and Hupo in 2002. Fish collected during the study were 20 species, 1,927 individuals and 53,969 g off Uljin, and 23 species, 2,762 individuals and 146,550 g off Hupo. Liparis tessellatus, Glyptocephalus stelleri and Cleisthenes pinetorum were predominated in abundance, and these 3 species were accounted for 70.9% in the number of individuals and 83.8% in biomass off Uljin, and 90.3% and 70.9% off Hupo, respectively. In the Korean coastal water of the East Sea, the migrating pelagic fish were predominated in catch by set net or gill net, and species composition varied greatly by season. Meanwhile, the fish collected by an otter trawl in the coastal water off Uljin and Hupo were dominated by the resident demersal fishes and did not show any clear seasonal trend in species composition. Collected G. stelleri and C. pinetorum were mainly composed of young fish, and size data as depth indicated that they moved into deeper shelf as they grew.
The present study was conducted to elucidate effects of heat, salt and hydrocolloid treatments on flying fish Cypselurus agoo roe analogs prepared using calcium alginate gel. The changes in size, sphericity and rupture strength of the analogs as affected by treatments of heat, sodium chloride and hydrocolloids were investigated. The size (mm), sphericity (%), and rupture strength (kPa) of the analogs were $2.2{\pm}0.1$, $98.2{\pm}0.2$, and $74.7{\pm}1.7$, respectively. When the analogs were heated at $95^{\circ}C$ in water, the size was slightly decreased. The rupture strength by curing with 2% sodium chloride was slightly increased. Sphericity didn't show significant differences by sodium chloride and heat treatment. The rupture strength of the analogs was slightly decreased by heat treatment, whereas remarkably decreased by curing with sodium chloride. In order to prevent a remarkable decrease in rupture strength of the analogs by curing with sodium chloride, the analogs were treated with hydrocolloids such as xanthan gum, gum guar, glucomannan, pectin and gelatin. The hydrocolloids treated analogs showed an increment in size and no significant changes in sphericity. On the other hand, the rupture strength of the hydrocolloids treated analogs exhibited remarkable increase than that of untreated ones.

Fish shows great difference in growth rate between individuals during larval development and early growth. This difference seriously reduces the production efficiency in fish culture. Growth hormone (GH)/Insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF1) system is said to play some pivotal roles in fish growth. In this study, we investigated differences of GH, IGF1 and GHR gene expressions in juvenile red spotted grouper (Epinephelus akaara) with different growth performance. Red spotted groupers were reared under the same environmental condition (water temperature $24{\pm}1^{\circ}C$, natural light) for 96 days after hatching. They were divided into 3 groups by size (fast growing, middle growing and slow growing groups: FGG, MGG, and SGG, respectively). RNA was extracted from the brain, liver and muscle tissues from each group, and target gene expression was examined by real-time PCR. In the brain with pituitary gland, expression of GH gene in FGG was significantly higher than the expression in SGG, but the expression of IGF1 and GHR genes in the muscle was highest in SGG. Difference of GHR and IGF1 mRNA in the liver between groups with different growth performance was less clear than that in other tissues, although level of IGF1 mRNA was higher in SGG than in MGG. These results suggest that hormonal governing of growth is not the same in fast growing and slow growing fish, and size grading could cause a shift of hormonal state and growth pattern in this species.

This study was conducted to compare the sensory and enzymatic properties of Israeli carp Cyprinus carpio muscle (ICM) according to size [normal large (NLF) and small fish (NSF)], part [ventral (VM) and dorsal muscles (DM)], and commercial value [NLF, recessive (RF), or deformed fish (DF)]. There was not difference in salty of all samples. The sourness was stronger in NLF and DM than in NSF, RF, and DF, and VM, respectively. The umami of ICM showed no size-associated differences; however, those of DM, and DF and RF, were superior to those of the VM and NLF, respectively. The sweetness was also stronger in NLF than in NSF and RF, and in DM than VM. The sweetness of DF didn't differ compared to those of NLF and RF. The intensity of fish odor was weaker in NSF or DF than that in NLF, and was higher in DM than in VM. The color of ICM was bright in NSF and DF compared to NLF. Enzyme activity was very low in the muscles and high in viscera. Therefore, ICM could be used as a material for seafood products, regardless of size, part, and commercial value; however, the issue of lipid oxidation must be considered.
We quantitatively investigated compositions of fish and invertebrate bycatch in Korean shrimp fisheries. We sampled shrimp trawl bycatch from 48 commercial trawls over 1 year. These samples contained 108 taxa from 50 families, with 60 fish taxa contributing 51.2% of the total biomass and 48 invertebrate taxa 48.8%. However, 86.32% of the total individual organism density comprised invertebrates, while individual fishes made up the remainder. Within the bycatch, two fish species varied in population size structure by season, suggesting recruitment is seasonal in these taxa. Overall general catch characteristics (total bycatch biomass and organism density) varied significantly by season and tide, and a significant interaction effect was observed (season$\times$tide) on total density, but not on total biomass. The data collected will be used in designing a program of long-term bycatch monitoring.

This paper describes a floating fish reef technology for enhancement of fisheries productivity in the muddy areas. The floating fish reef was composed of main fish cage, anchor rope and concrete anchor blocks. Main fish cage was made up of 12 steel buoys measuring 0.37m in diameter and 1.5m long, polyethylene (PE) netting and circular steel rings. Each steel buoy had buoyancy of 110kgf. The size of main fish cage was 1.96 m in diameter and 3.75m in length. Monitoring on its durability was made for eight months after installation. The steel buoys fixed on main fish cage and nettings were observed to be kept safely. The wet weight of fouling organisms per unit area$(m^2)$ was 26.6kgf after eight months. Reduction in the cross-section of steel buoys and circular steel rings of main fish cage were not found. In addition, any cracks on the concrete anchor blocks were not observed.
The effects of daily feeding frequency (Exp I), water temperature (Exp II), and stocking density (Exp III) on the growth of river puffer, Takifugu obscurus, juvenile fish of 10 and 40 g in body weight were examined to develop effective techniques to produce river puffer in a non-exchange water system. In Exp I, fish were fed commercial floating feed with 45 % protein one to five times per day to apparent satiation each by hand daily for 8 weeks at $25^{\circ}C$. In both the 10- and 40-g size groups, the final body weight, daily feed consumption, and weight gain of fish fed one meal per day were significantly lower than those of fish fed five meals per day (P < 0.05). However, there were no significant differences in the final body weight, daily feed consumption, and weight gain among fish fed two, three, and five meals per day. Feed efficiency showed decreasing tendency with increasing size of fish. In Exp II, fish of 10 and 40 g in initial body weight were reared with the commercial feed at $15-30^{\circ}C$ for 8 weeks. The weight gain of fish increased with raising water temperature up to $25^{\circ}C$ and decreased drastically at $30^{\circ}C$ for both sizes. The Q10 of specific growth rate was decreased with raising water temperature from 5.04 (temperature interval, $15-20^{\circ}C$) to 0.66 ($25-30^{\circ}C$) for the 10-g fish and from 4.98 to 0.31 for the 40-g fish. In Exp III, the effect of stocking density on growth was examined with fish of 10 and 40 g in initial body weight. The final body weight for initial stocking densities of 4, 8, and $12kg/m^3$ was significantly higher than that of $20kg/m^3$ for the 10-g fish, and the final stocking density reached 10.1, 19.2, 28.7, and $39.9kg/m^3$, respectively. For the 40-g fish, the final body weight for initial stocking densities of 3 and $6kg/m^3$ was significantly higher than that of 9 and $15kg/m^3$ and the final stocking density reached 7.38, 13.5, 17.1, and $27.5kg/m^3$, respectively (P < 0.05). In both groups, weight gain tended to decrease with increasing stocking density; however, survival showed no significant difference.
