Potential risky exotic fish species, their ecological impacts and potential reasons for invasion in Korean aquatic ecosystems

  • Background: Due to the rapidly changing climatic conditions, South Korea faces the grand challenge of exotic species. With the increasing human movement, the influx of alien species to novel regions is prevalent across the globe. The latest research suggests that it is easy to prevent the introduction and establishment of alien species rather than controlling their spread and eradication. Like other countries, the Korean Ministry of Environment released a list (in 2018) of 45 potential risky exotic fish species considered likely to be invasive candidate fish species if they ever succeed in entering the Korean aquatic ecosystems. Results: The investigation into the invasion suitability traits showed that potential risky fish species could utilize those features in becoming invasive once they arrive in the Korean aquatic ecosystems. If the novel species establish viable populations, they are likely to incur higher economic costs, damage the native aquatic fauna and flora, and jeopardize the already perilled species. Furthermore, they can damage the installed infrastructure, decline overall abundance and biodiversity, and disturb the ecosystem services. Here we reviewed the list of fish species concerning their family, native origin, preferred aquatic biomes, main food items, current status in Korea, and potential threats to humans and the ecosystems. Data shows that most species are either already designated as invasive in the neighboring counties, including Japan, Vietnam, Thailand, and China, or originate from these countries. Such species have a higher climate match with the Korean territories. Conclusions: Therefore, it is exceptionally essential to study their most critical features and take regulatory measures to restrict their entry. The incoming fish species must be screened before letting them in the country in the future. The regulatory authorities must highlight the threatening traits of such species and strictly monitor their entrance. Detailed research is required to explore the other species, especially targeting the neighboring countries fish biodiversity, having demonstrated invasive features and matching the Korean climate.

계단식 어도에서의 어류 친화적 흐름 특성 연구 (Study on Fish-friendly Flow Characteristic in Stepped Fishway)

  • 하천에서는 어류의 상·하류 간의 이동을 위해 어도는 필수적으로 설치해야 하는 시설이다. 그러나 어도 내부의 흐름에 따라 이동효율의 차이가 발생한다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 FLOW-3D를 통해 월류수심에 따른 계단식 어도 내의 어류 친화적 흐름을 검토하였고, 모형을 검증하기 위해 개수로 실험을 수행하였다. 본 연구에서는 어류의 유영능력에 영향을 미치는 주요 항목으로는 유속, 난류운동에너지, 에너지소산율 등이 있으며, 이와 같은 항목으로 대상 어류를 피라미로 가정하여 어류 친화적 흐름의 적합성을 판단하였다. 월류 수심은 피라미에게 유효한 영향을 끼치는 것을 확인할 수 있었으며, 어도의 낙차에 따라 적합한 월류수심이 요구된다. 향후, 본 연구결과는 계단식 어도 설계의 기초자료가 될 수 있을 것이라 기대된다.

여수해역에 서식하는 감성돔의 동계행동 특성 (Behavioral Characteristics of Black Seabream Acanthopagrus schlegeli in Yeosu Waters During Winter)

  • Twelve black seabreams (Acanthopagrus schlegeli) were tagged with acoustic transmitters and their movement and behavior patterns were tracked using acoustic telemetry from 12 December 2006 to 15 August 2007. Seven of the 12 fish stayed within 500 m of the release point for over a month. In the spring tide, the number of detected signals and swimming depth of tagged fish changed at 12-hour intervals with the ebb tide. The number of detected signals of tagged fish decreased dramatically with the passage of time and had decreased by over 80% in May 2007, compared with January 2007.

낙동강 중.하류 구간에서 수중 음향측정방식을 이용한 강준치의 이동성 평가 (Evaluation of Movement Pattern of Erythroculter erythropterus Inhabit in the Mid-lower Part of Nakdong River Using Acoustic Telemetry)

  • 수중음향측정 방식은 어류이동에 대한 연속적인 자료를 확보하기 위해 사용되는 방식으로, 대형하천이나 하구에서 이동하는 어류의 이동에 용이하게 활용된다. 낙동강은 남한에서 가장 긴 하천으로 연속적인 보의 설치로 인하여 하천의 변형이 이루어지고 있다. 본 연구에서는 국내에 서식하는 잉어과 어류인 강준치를 대상으로 하여 수중음향측정방식을 적용, 서식처범위(home range)와 이동거리, 이동패턴에 대한 모니터링을 시행하였다. 연구는 낙동강 하구둑부터 창녕함안보까지의 약 80 km 구간을 대상으로 총 14개체의 강준치를 3지점에 방류하여 모니터링을 수행하였다. 하구둑(N02)에서 방류한 8개체들은 방류지점으로부터 15.9 km 상류지점까지를 서식처 범위로 하여 이동하였고, 삼랑진(N07)에서 방류한 4개체들은 신호가 사라진 E12개체를 제외하고 하류로 이동하였으며, 9.7 km 구간을 서식처 범위로 활용하였다. 2개체가 방류된 창녕함안보(N10)에는 모두가 하류로 이동 하였으며, 이 중 E14개체는 32일 동안 가장 긴 누적감지거리(36.7 km)를 이동하였다. 강준치의 체장과 누적감지거리, 서식처 범위와는 상관성이 없는 것으로 확인되었다(Spearman rank correlation, p>0.05). 비록 본 연구 방식이 담수어류의 이동에 유용하지만 좀 더 자세한 결과를 확보하기 위해서는 수신기의 수와 적용하는 발신기의 수를 증가시킬 필요성이 있다.

전어 선망 어구 및 조업 시스템 개발(I) -어구의 수중 형상 및 전어 어군의 대망 행동- (Improvement of Net Structure and Operating System in Purse Seine Fishery for Gizzard-shad, Konosirus Punctatns(I) -Underwater Geometry and Behaviour of fish School to the Net -)

  • 연안 어장에서 어획하는데 적합한 어구 구조 및 규모를 도출하기 위한 기초 연구로써 현용 전어 선망 어구의 침강 속도와 조업 과정별 수중 형상 변화 및 어구에 대한 어군의 행동 특성 등을 실제 조업 어장에서 조사하였으며, 그 결과를 정리하면 다음과 같다. 1. 그물의 침강 속도는 투망 시작부인 어포부에서 평균 13cm/sec, 중앙부인 170m부분과 280m 부분은 각각 9.0cm/sec와 9.5cm/sec, 투망 종료부에서 4.9cm/sec로 투망이 진행됨에 따라 점차 느려지다가 종료부에서 현저히 감소하였다. 2. 어구 하단부인 발줄은 투망 직후부터 인양되는 시점까지 대부분 해저에 닿게되고, 탈출방지장치로 사용중인 목봉이 발줄을 유지하는 수심은 평균 2.7m 이내로 현장에서 어민들이 의도하는 것보다 실제 깊이는 훨씬 낮았다. 3. 전어 어군은 표층보다 저층에서 훨씬 농밀한 군집 형태를 보이고 대부분의 시간을 해저에서 머물다 조류가 약해지면 표층으로 부상하는 연직 운동을 반복하였으며, 조류의 흐름이 빠른 사리 때에 더욱 뚜렷하게 나타났다. 4. 그물에 갇힌 전어 어군은 투망 후 곧바로 침하하였다가 다시 상승하는 수직 행동을 반복하였으며, 그물 벽을 돌기 시작하는 어군과 일정한 유영 패턴 없이 포위권내를 직선적으로 움직이는 어군으로 구분되었고, 그물 벽을 타고 도는 어군은 쉽게 그물감에 갇히는 경향이었다. 5. 어군의 탈출은 수심에 따라 차이를 보이는데, 수심이 낮은 어장에서는 표층에서 해저까지 그물이 어군을 차단하게 되므로 어구의 양 끝단 쪽에서만 탈출하고, 수심이 20m 이상 되는 해역에서는 그물의 침강 속도보다 침하하는 어군의 속도가 빠르기 때문에 그물에 조우한 어군은 어구의 하단부를 통과하여 탈출하는 경우가 번번하였다. 6. 어구의 양 섶 개구부에서 어군은 탈출 방지 장치인 목봉을 설치한 후에도 목봉의 하방으로 계속 탈출하여 목봉의 역할이 미비한 것으로 보아졌다.

스테레오 카메라 기법을 이용한 참다랑어의 크기 및 유영속도 측정 (Measurement of size and swimming speed of Bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus) using by a stereo vision method)

  • This study was performed to develop a video based system which can be used to measure the averaged fish size in a non-intrusive fashion. The design was based on principles of simple stereo geometry, incorporated fish dimensions weight relationships and took into consideration fish movement to lower system costs. As the fish size is an important factor that impacts the economy of an aquaculture enterprise. Size measurements, including fork length, width or height, girth, thickness and mass, can be used to determine fish condition in the fish farm, so the averaged fish size of fish cage needs to consistently monitor in open ocean aquaculture cage. A precision of ${\pm}3%$ for replicate length measurements of a 60cm bar is obtained at distances between 2.0 and 6.0m, and the mean fork length and mean swimming speed of bluefin tuna were estimated to 48.8cm and 0.78FL/s, respectively.

지질 및 콜라겐, Drip 량이 양식 및 자연산 도미와 넙치 육질의 경도에 미치는 영향 (The Effect of Lipid and Collagen Content, Drip Volume on the Muscle Hardness of Cultured and Wild Red sea bream (Pagrosomus auratus) and Flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus))

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of the lipid and collagen content and drip volume on the hardness of fish meat. Red sea bream (cultured and wild) and flounder (cultured, cultured with obosan and wild) were used for this study. Textural differences between cultured and wild meats were determined by the measurements of hardness, lipid and collagen content, and drip volume. Lipid content of the dorsal muscle was higher especially in cultured red sea bream (3.32%) than in wild one. Cultured and wild flounder contained lower content of lipid than red sea bream. The content of collagen was higher in cultured flounder fed with obosan (8.37 mg/g muscle) and wild flounder (8.02 mg/g muscle) than others. Drip volume was the highest in cultured flounder fed with obosan (8.67%). The hardness of raw meat was correlated with the contents of lipid (r= -0.7063) and collagen (r= 0.8307), significantly. Cultured fish contained more lipid and less collagen than wild one. So, the hardness of these fish meats was lower than wild one. However, cultured flounder fed with obosan showed no difference in hardness compared with wild one. In the cooked meat, there was no relationship between the hardness of fish meat and the contents of lipid and collagen. But, the drip volume was significantly related with the hardness (r= 0.6870). From these results, the factors contributing the textural difference between wild and cultured fish meat would be the lipid and collagen contents, and two ways to improve the texture of cultured fish meat could be suggested. One is to lower the lipid content by feed control, and the other is to raise the collagen content by inducing more fish movement.

Changes in hematoserological profiles and leukocyte redistribution in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) under progressive hypoxia

  • In recent years, global warming is causing dramatic environmental changes and deterioration, such as hypoxia, leading to reduced survival rate and growth performance of farmed aquatic animals. Hence, understanding systemic immuno-physiological changes in fish under environmental stress might be important to maximize aquaculture production. In this study, we investigated physiological changes in rainbow trout exposed to hypoxic stress by monitoring changes in blood chemistry, leukocyte population, and expression levels of related cytokine genes. Hematological and serological factors were evaluated in blood obtained from rainbow trout sampled at a dissolved level of 4.6 mg O2 L-1 and 2.1 mg O2 L-1. Blood and head kidney tissue obtained at each sampling time point were used to determine erythrocyte size, leukocyte population, and cytokine gene expression. The level of LDH and GPT in fish under progressive hypoxia were significantly increased in plasma. Likewise, the (Granulocyte + Macrophage)/lymphocyte ratio (%) of fish exposed to hypoxia was significantly lower than that in fish in the control group. Such changes might be due to the rapid movement of lymphocytes in fish exposed to acute hypoxia. In this study, significant up-regulation in expression levels of IL-1β and IL-6 gene appeared to be involved in the redistribution of leukocytes in rainbow trout. This is the first study to demonstrate the involvement of cytokines in leukocyte trafficking in fish exposed to hypoxia. It will help us understand systemic physiological changes and mechanisms involved in teleost under hypoxic stress.

한말$\cdot$일제강점 초기 군산 어물시장의 변동과 객주 (A Study on the Change of Fishes Market and Inland Market Brokers on Gunsan,1899-1919)

  • This study aims to examine the change of fish market(魚物市場) and inland brokers(客主, kaegju) on Gunsan(群山), (1899-1919). The increasement of productive capacity in the agriculture and the development of exchange economy in the late period of Chosun Dynasty activated the distribution of fishery products. As a result, the inland brokers who participated in the production and distribution of fishes grew largely. They made the basement of fishery modernization by providing the funds for the fisheries and making the national distribution network. But Japanese fishermen began to hold the domestic market as the Japan government supported legislatively and economically after the opening ports of Korea. On the contrary, the distribution of fishery products had the characteristics different from the production of some. The case of Gunsan which opened in 1899 showed these characteristics as Gunsan is a short distance from Kangkyung(江景), one of three biggest markets and was a base of fishery, That is to say, though the fishery merchants from Japan set up 'a fish market'(魚市場), they didn't hold the sales network on Gunsan, Because the inland brokers on Gunsan had a sales network and began the socio-economic movement. It goes without saying that the instability of price, the difficulties of charge and the racial taste difference in fish made the fish sales from Japan confronted with the difficulties. After Japanese Imperialism enforced the Company Law, the Market Regulation, the Chamber of Commerce Law before or after 1910, Korean inland brokers were disprited and Japanese 'fish market' began to grow largely. These phenomena appeared on Gunsan, too. Especially, the opening of a railway was the main factor which strengthened Japanese 'fish market'. After 1915, Japanese 'fish market' on Gunsan defeated the distribution network of inland brokers.
