  • The distribution, and length and age compositions of Johnius belengeri were studied using samples collected by an otter trawl from the five different coastal waters of Korea ; Asan Bay, Cheonsu Bay, waters off Yeongkwang and Samchonpo, and Yeongil Bay. This fish showed a high density of 1,147 individuals/$10,000m^2$ and predominated in abundance of the demersal fish in the coastal water off Yeongkwang. The mean density was 94 individuals/$10,000m^2$ in Cheonsu Bay and 8-24 individuals/$10,000m^2$ in Asan Bay and in the water off Samchonpo. Few fish were collected from Yeongil Bay. J. belengeri occurred from spring to autumn in the study area and showed a relatively high density in spring or in summer. The fish collected in spring and in summer composed of adults of age group I, II and III. Some juveniles began to occurred in the waters off Yeongkwang and Samchonpo from summer. The fish collected in autumn consisted mainly of the fish of age group 0. It implies that the adults after spawning moved out from the embayments for feeding. but the young fish stayed and grew in the embayments until late autumn when they migrated to the offshore water for wintering.

  • The oblong rockfish, Sebastes oblongus has recently drawn attention from aquaculturists because of its marketable value and tolerance against winter water temperature in the southern coastal waters of the Korean peninsula. In the study of temperature effect on growth, water temperature $16^{\circ}C$ showed best growth. The upper temperature of the fish showed feeding activity was $27^{\circ}C$ over which the fish showed no longer feeding activity. Stocking density was also a critical factor affecting the growth and survival of the juvenile fish. The best growth was in the density of 200 juveniles/L, while the highest survival was in the density of 100 juveniles/L. A feeding experiment was conducted to determine the effects of feeding frequency on growth and survival. A feeding scheme of twice a day was good enough in the sense of growth, survival, and economy. These results indicate that parameters such as water temperature, density, tank size and feeding frequency are consideration for best seed production of the fish.

  • The infection status with Clonorchis sinensis metacercariae (CsMc) was examined in freshwater fishes from Yangcheon (a branch of Gyeongho-gang), which is located in Sancheong-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do, the Republic of Korea. Total 2,201 fishes in 26 species were examined by the artificial digestion method through 7 years. CsMc were detected in 1,171 (53.2%) fishes in 21 spp. (80.8%) and their density was 85 per fish infected. Total 532 (99.6%) out of 534 Pungtungia herzi (index fish) examined were infected with 147 CsMc per fish infected. Metacercarial densities in this fish were highest in 2015 (179 CsMc), followed by 2012 (168), 2013 (152), 2016 (145), 2014 (114), and 2017 (89) respectively. In the gobioninid fish group, i.e., P. herzi, Sarcocheilichthys spp., Squalidus spp., Pseudogobio esocinus, Hemibarbus longirostris, and Hemibarbus labeo, 841 (92.7%) fishes were infected with 117 CsMc per fish infected. Total 250 (54.7%) acheilognathinid fish (bitterlings), Acheilognathus spp. and Acanthorhodeus spp. were infected with 5.8 CsMc. In the rasborinid fish (chubs) group, i.e., Zacco platypus, Zacco temminckii, and Zacco koreanus, 77 (13.7%) out of 563 fish examined were infected with 2.4 CsMc in average. The susceptibility indices of CsMc were 49.09 in the overall positive fish group, 104.15 in the gobioninid group, 3.17 in the acheilognathinid group and 0.35 in the rasborinid fish group respectively. Only 1 CsMc was detected in 3 fish species, Coreoperca herzi, Channa argus, and Lepomis macrochirus, respectively. Conclusively, it was confirmed that CsMc are moderately prevalent in fishes from Yangcheon in Sancheon-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do, Korea.

  • Flounder were fed a reference diet and test diets containing various feed ingredients: mackerel fish meal, meat meal, soybean meal, wheat flour, wheat gluten, corn gluten meal and brewer's yeast. Apparent digestibility was determined using a reference diet with 0.5% chromic oxide indicator and test diets contained 70% reference diet and 30% of the feed ingredient being evaluated. Apparent digestibility coefficients for amino acid and energy in the reference and test diets were determined, and digestibility coefficients for the test ingredients were calculated based on differences in the digestibility of test diets relative to the reference diet. The fish averaging 300 g were held in 2000 L tanks at a density of 20 fish per tank. Feces were collected from three replicate groups of fish using a fecal collection column attached to fish rearing tank. Apparent total amino acids digestibilities(90-95%) of mackerel fish meal, soybean meal, wheat gluten, corn gluten meal and brewer's yeast were higher than those of meat meal and wheat flour(P<0.05). Apparent energy digestibilities(86-98%) of mackerel fish meal, meat meal, soybean meal, wheat gluten and corn gluten meal were significantly higher(P<0.05) than those of wheat flour and brewer's yeast. These results provide useful information about nutrient and energy utilization for flounder.

  • This study was conducted on October 23, 2020 at the Cheongpyeong Reservoir located in Seorakmyeon, Gapyeong-gun, Gyeonggi-do, and analyzed the horizontal and vertical distribution patterns of fish based on data obtained using fishfinder. The total surface area of fishfinder survey conducted was 782,853 m2, and where the water depth (WD) ranges from 10 m to 12 m is widest which 31.7% of total surface area. As a result of the heat map analysis, fish density was highest at right bank under the Gapyeong-bridge, but there was no specific pattern in horizontal distribution of fish. As a result of vertical distribution of fish analysis, 86.6% of fishes are observed at below 6 m of the fish depth (FD, distance from water surface to fish). As a result of the relative height (RH, water depth-distance from bottom to fish ratio) analysis, there was a tendency that fishes are distributed in near surface area more as the WD increased. This tendency could have various reasons such as water temperature gradient along the water depth, and further studies are required for detailed explanation.

  • It was confirmed that the fish diversity decreased with increasing index of weir's density (IWD) in the four river systems. The IWD showed difference with watershed, it was high in the Nakdong River (NDR). Both two river systems of Gum River (GUR) and Yeongsan River (YSR) were similar, whereas relatively lower density observed in the Han River (HNR) system. A result of 2-Dimensional Kolmogorov-Smirnov (2-DKS) as a nonparametic test showed different threshold values affecting fish diversity with the river systems. The p-values based on Dmax, were significantly different at 0.05 level (except for YSR). The threshold values affecting fish diversity were also different with watershed. The values were 1.6/km of the HNR, 1.3/km of the NDR, and 2.3/km of the GUR, respectively. The fish diversity was decreased when IWD is over threshold values. The IWD of total 404 rivers (about 33%) among 1,217 surveyed in this study showed above threshold value. These rivers should be considered first for evaluating river continuity. The IWD and threshold value suggested in this study would be useful for selecting a stream priority for river connectivity study.

  • This study examined the spatiotemporal distribution of demersal fish aggregations in the Northern East China Sea by conducting a trawl survey with hydroacoustic devices. A bottom trawl was used for this survey and fish density was determined from the catch data. Acoustic data were collected at frequencies of 38 and 200 kHz from November to December 2014 and converted into the nautical area scattering coefficient (NASC, $m^2/n{\cdot}mile^2$). In the catch data analysis, the range of catch per unit area by station was $26-8,055kg/km^2$ and for the acoustic data, that of the NASC was $0.45-34.80m^2/n{\cdot}mile^2$. The values were significantly correlated. The combined results of both surveys found that the density was highest at St. 5 ($33^{\circ}$ 10.3', $126^{\circ}$ 23.3') and lowest at St. 8 ($33^{\circ}$ 20.7', $127^{\circ}$ 36.3'). The application of hydroacoustic methods offers a new approach for estimating the biomass of demersal fish aggregations.

  • A new RNA virus isolated from abnormally swimming behavior has caused mortalities in salmonid fish (Oh et al., 1995 a), A reverse transcriptase (RTase) activity of the virus was determined by using poly r(A) : oligo d(T) as templete : primer. This RTase activity was associated with virus particles of buoyant density of 1.16 g/ml. The virus particles in sucrose fractions were enveloped and were about 85 nm diameter with central electron-dense core. The brain and kidney samples of artificially infected fish showed RTase activity. Virus particle associated proteins about 120, 80, 65, 61, 48, 42, 35, 30, 25, 19, and 15 kDa were observed when examined by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis analysis. This study showed the presence of a new retrovirus in salmonid fish, which tentatively called RVS (Retrovirus of salmonid).

  • In order to investigate the effect of file fish oil and perilla oil on lipid components in serum and liver of rats on hypercholesterolemic diet, concentrations of total cholesterol, triglyceride and phospholipid in serum and liver were measured along with high density lipoprotein cholesterol concentration of the serum. Body weight gain and amount of food intake did not differ significantly among different dietary groups. Concentration of total-cholesterol in serum was significantly lower with 5% lard+5% soybean oil, 5% lard+5% perilla oil and 5% lard+5% file fish oil diets than with 10% lard diet. High density lipoprotein cholesterol concentration was highest in 5% lard+5% file fish oil group. Ratio of high density lipoprotein cholesterol to total cholesterol was highest in 5% lard +5% file fish oil group. Concentrations of total cholesterol in liver were not significantly different among all groups, but were slightly low in 5% lard+5% file fish oil and 5% lard+5% perilla oil groups. Concentration of serum triglyceride was significantly lower in 5% lard+5% soybean oil and 5% lard+5% perilla oil groups compared with 10% lard group. Concentration of serum phospholipid was lowest in rats on 5% lard+5% file fish oil diet and was lower in 5% lard+5% soybean oil and 5% lard +5% perilla oil groups than in 10% lard group. Concentration of triglyceride and phospholipid in liver were not significantly different among all groups. but tended to be relatively low in rats on 5% lard+5% perilla oil diet, In conclusion, the results suggest that perilla oil and file fish oil have depressing effects on serum levels of total cholesterol, triglyceride and phospholipid.

  • As the capture fishing industry has declined, the aquaculture industry has become an important source of seafood. With this tendency all fish farming will be performed by large-scale farms where the fish are cultivated in much high density and as a result the incidence of infectious diseases increases. Therefore, vaccination has become an increasingly important part of aquaculture as a cost effective method of controlling various diseases. The early fish vaccines were the formalin inactivated bacteria or virus cultures, which were administered by either immersion or injection. Recombinant DNA biotechnology allowed us to develop orally administrated DNA and recombinant vaccines. In terms of the manufacturing process and cost, Lemna and Spirodela is the most efficient and reliable plant expression system for the production of edible vaccine.
