  • The fungal strain KNU16-004 was isolated from a field soil sample collected in Seoul. The isolate was identified as Leptosphaerulina australis based on morphological characterization and phylogenetic analysis using the internal transcribed spacer (ITS), large subunit (LSU) rDNA regions, and ${\beta}-tubulin$ (Tub2). This is the first report of Leptosphaerulina australis in Korea.

  • In May to July 2019, ovate-leaf atractylodes seedling and plant with Damping-off symptoms were observed in farmer field at Sangju and Mungyeong, Korea. Seven fungal isolates have been retrieved from diseased root tissue and identified as Rhizoctonia solani AG-5 based on morphological and molecular characteristics. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report on damping-off of ovate-leaf atractylodes caused by R. solani AG-5 in South Korea.

  • Synovial chondromatosis is an uncommon disorder characterized by cartilaginous proliferation in the synovium. The cartilaginous nodules occur in the synovial membrane of a joint, bursa, or tendon sheath. It frequents large joints including knee, hip, and elbow. Synovial chondromatosis originating from the first metatarsal is extremely rare. We report a case of 37-year-old man with synovial chondromatosis of the first metatarsal.

  • Ganglioneuroma (GN) is a rare benign tumor of neural crest origin usually found in the abdomen, but may occasionally present at uncommon sites including the cervical, lumbar, or sacral spine. However, GNs of thoracic spine are extremely rare. In this report, we describe a 12-year-old girl with giant GN in the thoracic spine, who underwent successful resection (T1-4 level) of the tumor. Histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis. GN should be considered in the differential diagnosis of any paraspinal mass. A high index of suspicion and correlation of clinico-radiological findings is necessary in differentiating a large benign tumor from a malignant growth. Complete surgical excision is the treatment of choice; however tumor size and location need to be considered for the surgical approach (one-step or multiple surgeries). Close follow-up after surgery is mandatory.

  • This case report describes the management of a 30-year-old woman with hopeless mandibular first molars and right maxillary second premolar. The treatment plan included mandibular second and third molar protraction after extraction of mandibular first molars. Mini-implants were placed between roots of first and second premolar. Sliding mechanics with lever arm was used to prevent inclination of molars. A good functional occlusion was achieved in 38 months without clinically significant side effects. Most of the extraction space of mandibular first molar was closed by protraction of second and third molars. The skeletal Class II pattern was improved by counterclockwise rotation of mandible through reduction of wedge effect. Mandibular molar protraction with orthodontic mini-implants in adequate cases would be a great alternative to prosthetic implant and reduce the financial and surgical burden of patients.

  • Adult chironomids were collected by various methods, such as light traps, sweeping on grasses, aspiration of light-attracted adults, and sweeping of swarming males with insect nets at various localities. All collected specimens were slide-mounted and identified. I report eight species new to science: Chironomus jangchungensis n. sp., Demicryptochironomus paracamptolabis n. sp., Demicryptochironomus wontongensis n. sp., Microtendipes paratamagouti n. sp., Polypedilum macrohemisphere n. sp., Eukiefferiella busanensis n. sp., Psectrocladius paratogaminimus n. sp., and Pseudosmittia seosania n. sp. I also report four species for the first time in Korea: Chironomus fujiprimus Sasa, Pentapedilum convexum Johannsen, Tanytarsus smolandicus Brundin, and Tanytarsus oyamai Sasa. All species are fully described with illustrations. This is the first report of the genera Eukiefferiella and Pseudosmittia in Korea.

  • This report is the first intermediate report of a series of field test result of large high voltage motors. Major specimens were 3.3/6.6kV class pump motor that was installed and operated for public water service by KOWACO(KOrea WAter resources COperation). The capacity of specimen motors were in range of several hundred kVA. Until now, we get the 22 field test result by testing technique discribed in IEEE standards and discharge-map technique reported by Japanese engineers. The test result were varied very wide range, and there was a tendency according to insulation material and manufacture.

  • A fungus associated with gray blight on tea plant (Camellia sinensis) was identifed as Pestalotiopsis theae based on the mycological characteristics. Mycelial growth on potato dextrose agar and size and shape of conidia of P. theae were similar to those of P. longiseta, but P. theae was different from P. longiseta in the color of three median cells and the number of apical appendages. Artificial inoculation of conidial suspension or mycelial mats on the wounded leaves and shoots of healthy plants induced the same disease, respectively. The Korean native variety was relatively. The Korean native variety was relatively more resistat to P. theae than a Japanese variety‘Yabukita’which has bee recently introduced and planted in large areas of southern parts of Korea. Here, we report the report the first record of gary blight caused by P. theae on tea plant in Korea.

  • Splenic myelolipoma is a rare tumor in dogs with an unclear origin. A male 13-year-old Schnauzer dog was presented because of a bump on the left side of the abdomen. Clinical examination and abdominal ultrasound revealed a mass in the spleen. A total splenectomy was carried out, and histopathology revealed a splenic myelolipoma. Before surgery, the patient showed high serum alanine aminotransferase levels, which returned to normal eight months after the resection. Unfortunately, the postoperative follow-up showed increased serum cholesterol and triglyceride levels, suggesting liver compromise. This is the first report of a splenic myelolipoma in Colombia.
