변형된 면적기반영역선별 기법에 의한 문자영상분할 (Handwritten Image Segmentation by the Modified Area-based Region Selection Technique)

  • 변형된 면적기반영역선별 기법으로 문자영상 속에 내재되어 있던 영역 분할을 회복하는 새로운 기법을 제안한다. 정보영역과 바탕영역으로 양분되어 있는 이진 원영상에 비해 오염 및 훼손으로 관측영상은 얼룩점과 잡음이 전체 영상에 섞여 다수의 크고 작은 영역들이 혼재된 그레이스케일 형태가 된다. 이러한 영상을 종래의 문턱치 처리나 확률적 기법으로 영역 분할하려면 이진영상으로 전환시킴에 의한 영역 형태 변형 문제가 발생한다. 이 문제를 최소화하기 위해 마름모꼴 블록을 채택한 반복조건부양식(iterated conditional mode, ICM) 기법으로 이진 영상을 구현하여 일차적으로 영역들의 집합으로 분류하였다. 그 다음 현재고려중인 화소에서 화소의 영역형성 판별과 영역의 면적을 산출하였다. 이를 전체 화소에 걸쳐 순차적으로 확산하여 해당영역들의 정보영역으로의 귀속 여부를 선택적으로 판정 분할함으로 정보영역 본래 형태를 복원하였다. 이 때 지정 영역들의 산출 면적들은 하나의 집합으로 배속 정렬되며 확률처리로 얻은 판별 파라미터 값에 의해 선별된다. 그레이스케일 탁본영상을 대상으로 종래의 문턱치 영역분할 기법과 ICM 기법도 함께 실험하였다. 그 결과 종래의 기법에 비해 우수한 영역분할 효과를 얻을 수 있었다.

Full-scale tests and finite element analysis of arched corrugated steel roof under static loads

  • Arched Corrugated Steel Roof (ACSR) is a kind of thin-walled steel shell, composing of arched panels with transverse small corrugations. Four full-scale W666 ACSR samples with 18m and 30m span were tested under full and half span static vertical uniform loads. Displacement, bearing capacities and failure modes of the four samples were measured. The web and bottom flange in ACSR with transverse small corrugations are simplified to anisotropic curved plates, and the equivalent tensile modulus, shear modulus and Poisson's ratio of 18m span ACSR were measured. Two 18 m-span W666 ACSR samples were analyzed with the Finite Element Analysis program ABAQUS. Base on the tests, the limit bearing capacity of ACSR is low, and for half span loading, it is 74-75% compared with the full span loading. When the testing load approached to the limit value, the bottom flange at the sample's bulge place locally buckled first, and then the whole arched roof collapsed suddenly. If the vertical loads apply along the full span, the deformation shape is symmetric, but the overall failure mode is asymmetric. For half span vertical loading, the deformation shape and the overall failure mode of the structure are asymmetric. The ACSR displacement under the vertical loads is large and the structural stiffness is low. There is a little difference between the FEM analysis results and testing data, showing the simplify method of small corrugations in ACSR and the building techniques of FEM models are rational and useful.

Fabrication of the catalyst free GaN nanorods on Si grown by MOCVD

  • Recently light emitting diodes (LEDs) have been expected as the new generation light sources because of their advantages such as small size, long lifetime and energy-saving. GaN, as a wide band gap material, is widely used as a material of LEDs and GaN nanorods are the one of the most widely investigated nanostructure which has advantages for the light extraction of LEDs and increasing the active area by making the cylindrical core-shell structure. Lately GaN nanorods are fabricated by various techniques, such as selective area growth, vapor-liquid-solid (VLS) technique. But these techniques have some disadvantages. Selective area growth technique is too complicated and expensive to grow the rods. And in the case of VLS technique, GaN nanorods are not vertically aligned well and the metal catalyst may act as the impurity. So we just tried to grow the GaN nanorods on Si substrate without catalyst to get the vertically well aligned nanorods without impurity. First we deposited the AlN buffer layer on Si substrate which shows more vertical growth mode than sapphire substrate. After the buffer growth, we flew trimethylgallium (TMGa) as the III group source and ammonia as the V group source. And during the GaN growth, we kept the ammonia flow stable and periodically changed the flow rate of TMGa to change the growth mode of the nanorods. Finally, as the optimization, we changed the various growth conditions such as the growth temperature, the working pressure, V/III ratio and the doping level. And we are still in the process to reduce the diameter of the nanorods and to extend the length of the nanorods simultaneously. In this study, we focused on the shape changing of GaN nanorods with different growth conditions. So we confirmed the shape of the nanorods by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and carried out the Photoluminescence (PL) measurement and x-ray diffraction (XRD) to examine the crystal quality difference between samples. Buckling failure of cylindrical ring structures subjected to coupled hydrostatic and hydrodynamic pressures

  • This paper presents an analytical approach to calculate the buckling load of the cylindrical ring structures subjected to both hydrostatic and hydrodynamic pressures. Based on the conservative law of energy and Timoshenko beam theory, a theoretical formula, which can be used to evaluate the critical pressure of buckling, is first derived for the simplified cylindrical ring structures. It is assumed that the hydrodynamic pressure can be treated as an equivalent hydrostatic pressure as a cosine function along the perimeter while the thickness ratio is limited to 0.2. Note that this paper limits the deformed shape of the cylindrical ring structures to an elliptical shape. The proposed analytical solutions are then compared with the numerical simulations. The critical pressure is evaluated in this study considering two possible failure modes: ultimate failure and buckling failure. The results show that the proposed analytical solutions can correctly predict the critical pressure for both failure modes. However, it is not recommended to be used when the hydrostatic pressure is low or medium (less than 80% of the critical pressure) as the analytical solutions underestimate the critical pressure especially when the ultimate failure mode occurs. This implies that the proposed solutions can still be used properly when the subsea vehicles are located in the deep parts of the ocean where the hydrostatic pressure is high. The finding will further help improve the geometric design of subsea vehicles against both hydrostatic and hydrodynamic pressures to enhance its strength and stability when it moves underwater. It will also help to control the speed of the subsea vehicles especially they move close to the sea bottom to prevent a catastrophic failure.

유한 요소법을 이용한 나 슬래브의 2차원 바닥 충격진동 해석 (2-Dimensional Floor Impact Vibration Analysis in Bare Reinforced Concrete Slab Using Finite Element Method)

  • The relationship between floor impact sound and vibration has been studied by field measurements, and the vibration modal characteristics have been analyzed. Vibration levels impacted by a standard heavy-weight impact source have been predicted according to the main design parameters using finite element method. Experimental results show that the dominant frequencies of the heavy impact sounds range below 100 Hz and that they are coincident with natural frequencies of the concrete slab. In addition, simple 2-dimensional finite element models are proposed to substitute 2 types of 3-dimensional models of complicated floor structural slabs those by The analytical result shows that the natural frequencies from first to fifth mode well correspond to those by experiments with an error of less than $12\%$, and acceleration peak value iscoincident with an error of less than $2\%$. Using the finite element model. vibration levels areestimated according to the design Parameters, slab thickness, compressive strength, and as a result, the thickness is revealed as effective to increase natural frequencies by $20\~30\%$ and to reduce the vibration level by 3$\~$4 dB per 30 mm of extra thickness.

동특성 변화를 이용한 감쇠 구조물의 손상예측 (Prediction of the Damage in the Structure with Damping Using the Modified Dynamic Characteristics)

  • A damage in structure alters its dynamic characteristics. The change is characterized by changes in the modal parameter, i.e., modal frequencies, modal damping value and mode shape associated with each modal frequency. Changes also occur in some of the structural parameters; namely, the mass, damping, stiffness matrices of the structure. In this paper, evaluation of changes in stiffness matrix of a structure is presented as a method not only for identifying the presence of the damage but also locating the damage. It is shown that changed stiffness matrix can be accurately estimated a sensitivity coefficient matrix derived from modifying mode shapes, First, with 4 story shear structure models, the effect of presence of damage in a structure on its stiffness matrix is studied. By using these analytical model, the effectiveness of using change of stiffness matrix in detecting and locating damages is demonstrated. To validate the predicted changing stiffness and its location, the obtained results are compared to the reanalysis result which shows good agreement.

Damage detection of multi-storeyed shear structure using sparse and noisy modal data

  • In the present paper, a method for identifying damage in a multi storeyed shear building structure is presented using minimum number of modal parameters of the structure. A damage at any level of the structure may lead to a major failure if the damage is not attended at appropriate time. Hence an early detection of damage is essential. The proposed identification methodology requires experimentally determined sparse modal data of any particular mode as input to detect the location and extent of damage in the structure. Here, the first natural frequency and corresponding partial mode shape values are used as input to the model and results are compared by changing the sensor placement locations at different floors to conclude the best location of sensors for accurate damage identification. Initially experimental data are simulated numerically by solving eigen value problem of the damaged structure with inclusion of random noise on the vibration characteristics. Reliability of the procedure has been demonstrated through a few examples of multi storeyed shear structure with different damage scenarios and various noise levels. Validation of the methodology has also been done using dynamic data obtained through experiment conducted on a laboratory scale steel structure.

  • The study covers the behavior of reinforced concrete deep beams loaded under 4-point bending, failed by shear and repaired using bonding glass fiber reinforced plastics fabrics (GFRP) patches. Two rehabilitation methods have been used to highlight the influence of the composite on the ultimate strength of the beams and their failure modes. In the first series of trials the work has been focused on the reinforcement/rehabilitation of the beam by following the continuous configuration of the FRP fabric. The patch with a U-shape did not provide satisfactory results because this reinforcement strategy does not allow to increase the ultimate strength or to avoid the abrupt shear failure mode. A second methodology of rehabilitation/reinforcement has been developed in the form of SCR (Strips of Critical Region), in which the composite materials reinforcements are positioned to band the inclined cracks (shear) caused by the shear force. The results obtained by using this method lead a superior out come in terms of ultimate strength and change of the failure mode from abrupt shearing to ductile bending.

Investigations on seismic response of two span cable-stayed bridges

  • In this paper, cable-stayed bridges with single pylon and two equal side spans, with variations in geometry and span ranging from 120 m to 240 m have been studied. 3D models of the bridges considered in this study have been analysed using ANSYS. As the first step towards a detailed seismic analysis, free vibration response of different geometries is studied for their mode shapes and frequencies. Typical pattern of free vibration responses in different frequencies with change in geometry is observed. Further, three different seismic loading histories are chosen with various characteristics to find the structural response of different geometries under seismic loading. Effect of variation in pylon shape, cable arrangement with variation in span is found to have typical characteristics with different structural response under seismic loading. From the study, it is observed that the structural response is very much dependent on the geometry of the cable-stayed bridge and the characteristics of the seismic loading as well. Further, structural responses obtained from the study would help the design engineers to take decisions on geometric shapes of the bridges to be constructed in seismic prone zones.

Truss structure damage identification using residual force vector and genetic algorithm

  • In this paper, damage detection has been introduced as an optimization problem and a two-step method has been proposed that can detect the location and severity of damage in truss structures precisely and reduce the volume of computations considerably. In the first step, using the residual force vector concept, the suspected damaged members are detected which will result in a reduction in the number of variables and hence a decrease in the search space dimensions. In the second step, the precise location and severity of damage in the members are identified using the genetic algorithm and the results of the first step. Considering the reduced search space, the algorithm can find the optimal points (i.e. the solution for the damage detection problem) with less computation cost. In this step, the Efficient Correlation Based Index (ECBI), that considers the structure's first few frequencies in both damaged and healthy states, is used as the objective function and some examples have been provided to check the efficiency of the proposed method; results have shown that the method is innovatively capable of detecting damage in truss structures.
