  • The purpose of this study is to investigate awareness of librarian's job prospects, and to do this a survey was conducted with 502 college students in 14 Departments of Library and Information Science around Korea and 753 librarians in libraries and related agencies. The study results are as follows. First, satisfaction with educational curriculum was higher in students than librarians. Second, both students and librarians regarded workplace based practical training as employment requirements and also evaluated certifications and academic performance as important requirements. Third, both groups asked that information on employment rates be available in a timely manner, and perceived that the librarian's job prospects were not bright. Therefore, in order to improve employment of librarians, it will be necessary to establish a job information system, reorganize the current educational curriculum into a practice-oriented curriculum, and introduce the national curriculum statements (NCS)-based curriculum.

  • There are many papers about the 7th curriculum. According to those papers, the 7th curriculum is a new one which makes considerable change in mathematics education. But there are some problems in the 7th curriculum. In this paper, we discuss those problems at first. That is, the 30% reduction of mathematics contents may not be true, and there are some problems about the terms, symbols, and consistency in mathematics contents. We also consider some problems in mathematics textbooks itself and the mathematics textbook authorization under the 7th curriculum. We suggest that (1) there must be valid process in passage of mathematics contents, (2) we must give emphasis on the process - particularly, the teaching of basic concept or principles - rather than the result, (3) we must have guarantee of the equity in the mathematics textbook authorization.

Methods: Data were obtained from a cross-sectional survey of 1,192 participants including dental hygiene professors, dental hygienists and students. Data were collected by mail, telephone call from the professors and research assistants, email, and direct visit from June 10 to August 10, 2013. The questionnaire consisted of 4 questions of general characteristics of the subjects and 13 questions of dental hygiene curriculum. Results: The professors answered the development of integrated dental hygiene curriculum as the first priority(48.9%) and dental hygienists(51.6%) and students(42.6%) chose the development of new dental hygiene curriculum(p<0.001). In relation to the necessity of the change of the dental hygiene curriculums, the professors gave 4.17 points which implied that curriculum change is the most important and necessary thing to do. The clinical dental hygienists and the students gave 3.90 and 3.47 points, respectively(p<0.001). Conclusions: The above-mentioned findings suggest that the revision of the current Korean dental hygiene curriculums is required. Therefore organizations related to dental hygiene including professor association and Korean Dental Hygienists Association should carefully rebuild the curriculum to improve the competency of dental hygienists. They should take the initiative in the development of a standardized curriculum.

  • This study aimed to analyze the debate on the Elementary School Mathematics Contents in the new National Elementary Mathematics Curriculum developed in 2006. With this, the feature of the new National Mathematics Curriculum compared with the past 7th National Elementary Mathematics Curriculum was investigated. And the drafts on developing the new National Elementary Mathematics Curriculum were investigated as well. Three main controversies were identified. The first controversy was related to the item which had been dealt in middle school curriculum and moved to elementary school in the new National Mathematics Curriculum (e.g. equations, direct proportion and inverse proportion). The second one was related to the order of teaching fraction. The third one was related to the fact that problem solving became one of the five domains in Elementary School Mathematics Curriculum. Those controversies came from a basic belief on the ranges and depths of elementary school mathematics, didactical point of view, or thoughts on what should the content in the National Mathematics Curriculum be. The issues and suggestions that were discussed in this paper might serve to improve the National Mathematics Curriculum.

Korea and China have announced a new mathematics curriculum in 2011, and have recently carried out in the whole school year. Korea and China are the countries to manage the national curriculum. The comparison with China is significant because of the similarity of our tradition and culture. In addition, the influence of Chinese education has been increasing gradually. Thus, the curriculum comparison between China and Korea has a significant value. Through this study, I extract the significant implications of mathematics education in Korea. This study can be summarized as the following. First, I have analyzed the elementary mathematics curriculum document systems in Korea and China. Second, I compared the goals of mathematics education in Korea and China. Third, this study compared the content areas and learning in elementary school mathematics curriculum in Korea and China. Fourth, I have analyzed the teaching and learning methods and the assessment of Korea and China. Finally, we compared and analyzed the proposed points for action set out in elementary school mathematics curriculum courses in Korea and China.
