The first purpose of this study is to verify the application of computer modelling to a enclosed space fire. The second one is to determine temperature distribution for the three different ventilation types in case of a enclosed space fire. The third one is to find out the ventilation direction and ventilation quantity to remove effectively heat and combustion products generated by a fire in variable air volume(VAV) system. Firstly, compared with experimental results of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory(LLNL), numerical results show good agreements. Secondly, among three different ventilation types, the numerical analyses show the highest temperature distribution in occupied zone(up to 1.8 m from bottom) from firing moment to 100 sec. when supply ducts are placed in ceiling and extract duct is placed close to the bottom on side walls. This is due to disadvantageous position of extract duct in ventilating high temperature air which rise because of buoyancy force. Thirdly, this study finds out effective ventilation direction and ventilation quantity to remove heat and combustion products generated by a fire by using VAV system. $CO_2$ concentration is used as a fire fume removal index. As soon as a fire happens, ventilation direction is changed in order to gather and drive out fire fumes. In case of three times ventilation quantity of ordinary one, $CO_2$ concentration and temperature have begun to decrease at 120 sec. after firing, i.e.fire fumes have begun to be removed.

In this study, smoke movement in tunnel fire with natural ventilation shaft has been investigated with various size of fire source. Gasoline pool fire with different size of diameter - 73mm, 100mm, 125mm and 154mm - was used to describe fire source. Experimental data is obtained with 1/20 model tunnel test and its results are compared with numerical results. The computation were carried out using FDS 1.0 which is a field model of fire-driven now. Temperature profiles between measured and predicted data are compared along ceiling and near the ventilation shaft. Both results are in good agreement with each other. In order to evaluating a safe egress time in tunnel fire, horizontal smoke front velocity was measured in model tunnel fire tests and those are compared with numerical results. According to the presence or absence of natural ventilation shaft, ventilation effect are estimated quantitatively. Finally, this paper shows that computational fluid dynamics(CFD) is applicable to predict fire-induced flow in tunnel.

In this study, the 1/35 reduced-scale model experiment were conducted to investigate designed ventilation effect on the smoke movement at rescue station fire in railway tunnel. A model tunnel with 2 mm thick, 10 m long, 0.19 m high and 0.26 m was made by using Froude number scaling law. The cross-passages installing escape door at the center were connected between incident tunnel and rescue tunnel. The n-heptane pool fires with heat release rate 698.97W were used as fire source. The fire source was located at the center and portal of incident tunnel as worst case. A operating ventilation system extracted smoke amount of 0.015 cms(cubic meters per second). The smoke temperature and CO gas concentration in cross-passage were measured to verify designed ventilation system. The result showed that, at center fire case without ventilation, smoke did not propagate to rescues station. In portal fire case, smoke spreaded to rescues station without ventilation. But smoke did not propagated to rescues station with designed ventilation.

In order to design of emergency ventilation systems, the smoke movements in tunnel fire with natural and forced ventilation were investigated. Reduced-scale experiments were carried out under the Froude scaling with novel fire source consisting many wicks. Temperature profiles were measured under the ceiling and vertical direction along the center of the tunnel and poisonous gases were measured at emergency exit point in the natural ventilation case. In forced ventilation, temperature profiles were measured with various flow rate to obtain critical velocity. The results showed that the interval of emergency exit having 225m was estimated reasonably through the measurements of temperature variation and poisonous gas in the natural ventilation. In the case of forced ventilation, the temperature distribution near fire source is remarkably different from that of natural ventilation. Also, the critical velocity to prevent upstream smoke flow has the range of 0.57m/s between 0.64m/s. Finally, it was also identified that although the increase of flow rate can suppress the backward flow of smoke to upstream direction, brings about the increase of flame intensity near stoichiometric fuel/air ratio.

The several assumptions and design parameters to determine the ventilation rate in tunnel ventilation system were examined. In longitudinal ventilating tunnel, the ventilation rate has been determined by the critical velocity above which the smoke propagation to the upstream of ventilating air is prevented. Based upon the examination of assumptions and experimental results, we suggested the improved method to determine the critical velocity. In transverse ventilating tunnel, we found that the ventilation rate has been determined in accordance with the custom rather than fire-smoke dynamics such as the critical velocity in the longitudinal ventilating tunnel. It is because the ventilation rate in the transverse ventilation system has been determined by considering only the ventilation of contaminant by vehicle. To improve the ventilation design parameters based upon the fire-smoke dynamics, we conducted model tunnel fire experiments. From the experimental results, smoke propagating distance and smoke filling were suggested as the design parameter to determine the ventilation rate in transverse ventilating tunnel. And tunnels in Europe designed by the custom is found to have the dangerous nature in view of fire safety.
The heat and smoke which generated by subway under fire is one of the most harmful factor in air tighten underground station. To prevent this, Trackway Exhaust System(TES) can be used. The heat released from the train running in the tunnel raises the temperature at the platform and the trackway, and thus proper ventilation system is required for comfortable underground environment. When the fire is occurred, TES is operated as smoke exhaust mode from normal ventilation mode. In the present study, the subway station which is one of the line number 9 in Seoul subway is modeled, and fired situation is simulated with several ventilation mode of ventilation system in trackway. For this simulation whole station is modeled. Non steady state 3D simulation which considered train under fire is entering to the station is performed. Temperature and smoke distribution in platform and trackway are compared. To represent heat by fire, heat flux was given to the fired carriage, also to describe smoke by fire, concentration of CO is represented. As the result of present study, temperature and smoke distribution is different as the method of ventilation in trackway and platform is changed. In over side of trackway, the fan must be operated as exhaust mode for efficient elimination of heat and smoke, and supply mode of fan operation in under side shows better distribution of heat and smoke. The ventilation system which is changed from ventilation mode to exhaust mode can be applied to control heat and smoke under fire.

In designing a ventilation system of a road tunnel, a possibility of using the system as a smoke control system in case of a tunnel fire has to be considered. In the present study, a numerical simulation on ventilation system is performed considering jet fan operations and moving traffic. A fire-mode operation by reversing some fan operations in case of a tunnel fire is also simulated. The results show that ventilation operation can control the pollutants effectively, and fire-mode operation can control smoke and temperature effectively to prevent a disaster.
This paper aims to evaluate the effects that presence, installation number and capacity of ventilation vent and presence of multiple fire sources have on the behaviour of smoke temperature induced by vehicle fire in road tunnel. Six types of scenarios were assumed and FDS was ran to simulate them. As the number of ventilation vents increases, the smoke temperature are calculated to be reduced, but it is shown that effects exerted by two ventilation vents are almost similar to ones by three ventilation vents. Capacity of ventilation vent has a greater impact on the reduction of smoke temperature than installation number of ventilation vents. Smoke temperatures computed for all scenarios except for scenario No. 1 (without ventilation vent) and scenario No. 6 (with multiple fire sources) above fire source are analyzed to be under $400^{\circ}C$ and it means that the radiation of smoke layer above fire source doesn't induce the ignition of materials around fire source.
In this work, the effects of fire curtain and forced smoke ventilation on smoke spread to auditorium in the stage fire of theater were investigated using the Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS). For the stage of 31 m (Width)${\times}$34 m (Depth)${\times}$32 m (Height) in dimension, the fast growth fire condition with 10 MW of heat release rate was applied. The forced smoke ventilation was set based on the National Fire Safety Code (NFSC) and previous research. The gap distances between the fire curtain and proscenium wall was established to be 0 m and 0.5 m. When the fire curtain was attached completely to the proscenium wall without any gap, no smoke spread from the stage to the auditorium occurred, independent of forced smoke ventilation. When the gap distance between the fire curtain and proscenium wall was 0.5 m, the smoke layer in the stage descended to the lower height from the bottom than the case without the fire curtain, which was because the smoke spread to auditorium was impeded by the fire curtain. Under the same fire curtain condition, the case with the forced smoke ventilation led to decreasing the mass flow rate of outflow through the gap between the fire curtain and proscenium wall, as compared to the case without the forced smoke ventilation. Based on this study, it was confirmed that the fire curtain and forced smoke ventilation were the effective tools to hold down the smoke spread to the auditorium in the stage fire of theater.
Ventilation and fire safety design in road tunnels are one of the most complex issues that need to be carefully considered and analysed in the designing stage of any potential upgrade of ventilation and other fire safety systems in tunnels. Placement road tunnels space has an important influence on fire safety, especially when considering the effect of adverse wind conditions that significantly influence ventilation characteristics. The appropriate analysis of fire and smoke control is almost impossible without the use of modern simulation tools (e.g., CFD) due to a large number of influential parameters and consequently extensive data. The impact of the strong wind is briefly presented in this paper in the case of a longitudinally ventilated road tunnel Kastelec, which is exposed to various severe wind conditions that significantly influence its fire safety. The possibility of using CFD simulations in the analysis of the tunnel placement in space terms negative effect of wind influence on the tunnel ventilation is clearly indicated.
