  • In the case of residential facilities, general fire scenarios cannot be applied. Becauseit is difficult to quantify due to the types of combustibles and various fire loads. Existing research conducting surveys of combustibles, but research on fire characteristics is insufficient. Therefore, in this study, an Excel macro that can be quantified by experimenting with the HRR experiments of sofa, drawer, mattress, chair, desk and TV, which are typical combustibles. As a result of experimenting 6 loading combustibles in domestic residential facilities by using a furniture calorimeter, values of 2,391.26kW appeared from the sofa, 1,891.80kW from the drawer, 1,778.95kW from the mattress, 1,104kW from the chair, 291kW from the desk, and 135.09kW from the TV. Also, by applying the α value of the fire growth rate by classifying fire-growing speeds at NFPA 72 (National Fire Alarm Code 2007, Annex B), the mattress can be defined as Very Fast, the sofa and drawer Fast, the TV Slow, the desk Slow, and the chair Medium.

  • A subway or an underground railway is one of the representative public transportations which lots of people take everyday. Then, subway station, which is also one of the very important public civil infrastructures, generally services for a long period of time. During the service time of stations, they are easily damaged from environmental corrosion, material aging, fatigue, and the coupling effects with long-term loads and extreme loads. Recently, civil construction work on the places near station often creates lots of damages to the station. As these damages accumulate, the performance of station degenerates due to the above factors. They would inevitably reduce the resisting capacity of station against the disaster; even they bring into the collapse of stations with the structural failure under long-term loads and extreme loads. And, if disaster such as earthquake, fire, etc. happens, it causes huge property damage and threatens the human lives. Because of these above reasons, the structural health monitoring system need to be developed for ensuring the safety of station. In this paper, the development directions of the structural health monitoring system with fiber optic sensor and USN for subway station are briefly described.

  • Concrete filled steel tubes(CFST) is considered as a column having better structural stability and better performance of fire resistance than that made with H-section and hollow section in itself. To get the fire resistance of the CFST, two kinds of concrete strength were used, 21 MPa, 40 MPa and 4 sorts of the applied loads were calculated and used to the specimens such as 3.5 m long, round and rectangular section. After various fire tests under 4 sorts of load ratios, the fire resistance of the CFST is not possible to get over 1 hour because of the rapid decrease of concrete strength. The below 50% of the applied load is recommended to obtain over 1 hour fire resistance of the CFST.

  • This paper proposes a solution to the problems of constructing and installing sway braces for existing standpipes in narrow spaces and pits. The study develops a floor-fixed sway brace for a narrow space that can support the ground area under horizontal seismic loads (X-axis, Y-axis) as well as vertical seismic loads (Z-axis). The results of structural analysis using SolidWorks simulation showed that the eccentric load was generated in the first design according to the anchored position along the vertical direction, and the problem of exceeding the allowable stress of the material along the horizontal and vertical directions. In the second design model, deformation caused by the eccentric load along the vertical direction, similar to the first design model, did not occur. The maximum strain rate was 0.17%, which is approximately 12.84% less than the first design model (Maximum strain rate of 13.01%). It was confirmed that the structural stability and durability improved. Compressive and tensile load testing of the prototypes showed that all of them meet the performance criteria of the standard.

  • This paper is aimed to analysis of electrical fire risk by overcurrent and series arc signals in traditional market shops Firstly, the field state investigation was conducted for shops at the traditional market (30 shops). At each shop in the traditional market, load characteristics were investigated and thermal characteristics in Panel were analyzed. Thermal characteristics in Panel is an indicator that can determine the impact of overcurrent. Results of the field state investigation found out four shops which showed abnormal thermal characteristics in Panel. Electrical load characteristics of these 4 shops were simulated by experimental setup consists of generator, motor and heater. In order to verify the electrical fire risk by electrical loads of 4 shops, arc and overcurrent experiments were conducted. The waveshapes of arc and overcurrent are investigated in both the time and frequency domains to find signal characteristics. The results obtained in this paper will be very helpful for the prevention of electrical fires occurred at the shops in the traditional market.

  • We proposed a design method for squib current supply & interlock circuits in guided-missile fire control systems. In order to design squib current supply circuits, various missile squib loads including line resistance and squib devices have to be considered in advance minimizing probability of redesign of circuits and reducing the development cost by implementing the most proper squib current supply circuit. Also, we presented a hardware interlock logic instead of the commonly used software safety logic to improve the safety of guided-missile fire control systems. The proposed squib interlock circuit enhances safety requirements of guided-missile fire control systems. We confirmed that simulation and measurement results of the proposed design method are the same as theoretical analysis results.

  • In this research, the fire resistance of Concrete-Filled Circular Steel Tube Columns (CFT) was evaluated by numerical analysis. As the materials of CFT columns, the steel of SPSR 400 grade and the concrete of 27.5MPa, 37.8MPa strengths were used. Significant parameters, such as concrete strength, axial load, and cross-sectional dimensions were determined. To verify the accuracy of the numerical analysis, the analysis results were compared with the former experiment results. The effect of the fire resistance time, axial load ratio, cross-sectional dimensions and concrete strength was evaluated by comparison with the fire resistance of the square CFT columns. This research showed that the structural behavior and fire resistance from the findings of numerical parametric studies showed a similarity to that of the experimental results. Therefore, this numerical analysis is reasonable in estimating the fire resistance of the circular CFT column.

  • Recently the requirements of the buildings built with structural steel were increased in terms of structural stabilities and fire resistance at severe fire conditions. To meet the building regulations of fire resistance, a fire design is needed. This is of a prescriptive method and a performance engineering based method. Recently a simple calculation method as one of performance based engineering method is very popular because of its ease for an application in building built with structural steel. But, in Korea the performance based engineering method is not allowed yet. Thus it is needed to make a guideline for the performance based engineering method. The purpose of this study is to establish the limit temperature derived from structural beams made with both a H-section and a H-section filled with concrete at the web and derived the limit temperatures from beams made with H-sections and found out that the limit temperatures from two kinds of specimens depended on the applied loads and the specimens filled with the concrete represented 3 hour fire resistance in the range of 80%, 60%, and 50% of the maximum load.

  • In order to predict about forest fire behavior we constructed a database for combustion characteristic of forest fuels in Samcheok, Gangwon-do and prepared fire risk map and fire risk rating using GIS method in this study. For the mapping autoignition temperature, ignition time, flame duration time, total heat release and total smoke release are selected as the standardized parameters and the overall risk rating was made up of the ignition risk parameters(autoignition temperature, ignition time) and the spread risk parameters(flame duration time, total heat release, total smoke release). Forest fire risk was classified into 5 grades and lower grade of fire risk rating mean to correspond to more dangerous forest fire. As a result, the overall risk rating of Samcheok was classified into three grades from 1 to 3 and Nogok-myeon and Miro-myeon were turned out the most dangerous areas for forest fire. Because of the colony of pine and oak trees and the higher fire loads, the flame propagation will be carried out quickly in these areas.
