  • This report deals with the process of the finite element computation and the design of the particular example tunnel (the double track section tunnel for Line 5, 7, 8 of Seoul Subway). The finite element calculations are performed with the program MISES 3 was developed from Austria which have been used in Eroupe. The principles of mechanic and mathematic analysis for the program MISES 3 are based on "The Finite Element Method -3rd Edition" by O.C zienkiewicz. The calculations are approximate analysis method divide continuum into quadrilateral element and calculate deformation and stress, according to the force equations at the node of the element. On the calculation of under excavation, this is a very convenient method and able to calculate compounded structure with tunnel lining and surrounding materials. Although calculated under the same factor and conditions, the result is not same solution, according to the shape of mesh. Therefore , it is important that we collect the construction results of NATM on the spot and by comparing the results of the finite element method with the surveying results review the validity of analysis model.sis model.

  • In these days. the finite element method(FEM) is a very common method for not only a simple vibration analysis but also the optimization of structures. Since the finite element model may contain thousands of degree of freedom, the eigensolutions require extreme computing power, which will result in a serious time-consuming problem. Thus, many researchers have challenged to find more improved modeling techniques and calculating methods to overcome such problems. The Guyan reduction method and the substructure synthesis method are typical examples of such methods. Of the substructure synthesis method, the component mode synthesis method (CMS) is widely used for dynamic analysis of structure. In this study. for the efficient analysis of jet loom structure. Component Mode Synthesis was carried out. The results of the finite element program developed are compared with those of the commercial package program ANSYS for the validation of the program. The results obtained by the program showed a good agreement with those of ANSYS. The program will be further refined and verified by test to yield more accurate results.

  • Three-dimensional rigid-plastic finite element formulation based on the membrane theory was described and a computer program for large deformation analysis was developed. In the formulation, normal and planar anisotropy of sheet material and rotation of the principal axes of anisotropy was taken into consideration. Sheet metal was assumed to be rigid-plastic material obeying Hill's quadratic yield criterion and its associated flow rule. Deep drawing process, as a preliminary test, for normal anisotropic material was analyzed in order to examine the validity of developed finite element program. The results were consistent with the existing finite element solutions or experimental data. The present study was mainly concerned with the influence of planar anisotropy on deformation behaviour. Finite element analysis and experiment were carried out for the whole process of deep drawing of planar anisotropic material. The computational and experimental results on the shape of ear, strain distribution and punch load were in good agreement.

  • While computer environments have been dramatically developed in recent years, as the building structures become larger, the structural analysis models are also becoming more complex. So there is still a need to model one shear wall with one finite element. From the viewpoint of the concept of FEA, if one shear wall is modeled by one finite element, the result of analysis is not likely accurate. Shear wall may be modelled with various finite elements. Among them, considering the displacement compatibility condition with the beam element connected to the shear wall, plane stress element with in-plane rotational stiffness is preferred. Therefore, in order to analyze one shear wall with one finite element accurately, it is necessary to evaluate finite elements developed for the shear wall analysis and to develop various plane stress elements with rotational stiffness continuously. According to the above mentioned need, in this study, the theory about a plane stress element using hierarchical interpolation equation is reviewed and stiffness matrix is derived. And then, a computer program using this theory is developed. Developed computer program is used for numerical experiments to evaluate the analysis results using commercial programs such as SAP2000, ETABS, PERFORM-3D and MIDAS. Finally, the deflection equation of a cantilever beam with narrow rectangular section and bent by an end load P is derived according to the elasticity theory, and it is used to for comparison with theoretical solution.

  • Preform design is one of the critical fields in metal forming. The finite element method(FEM) has been effective in designing preforms and process sequence, for which the backward tracing scheme of the rigid-plastic FEM has been explored. In this work a program using the backward tracing scheme by the rigid-plastic FEM is developed for three-dimensional plastic deformation, which is an extension of the scheme from two-dimensional cases. The calculation of friction between workpiece and die, and handling of boundary conditions during backward tracing require sophisticated treatment. The developed program is applied to upsetting of a rectangular block and to side pressing of a cylindrical workpiece. The results of the two applications show feasibility of the program on three-dimensional plastic deformation.

  • FRANC3D is a program for simulating arbitrary three-dimensional crack growth. Recently, a completely new version of the program, FRANC3D/NG, has been created. Unlike previous versions, which relied largely on boundary element analysis, the new version of the program works with finite element analysis exclusively and is designed to work with general-purpose commercial finite element packages. This paper presents the theoretical underpinnings of the procedures to adaptively modify the geometry and mesh of a model to simulate crack growth.

  • In this study, numerical analysis is applied to a two - dimensional model for verifying the general finite element program, Abaqus' s extended finite element method(XFEM). The cohesive element model used in the existing research has a limitation in simulating the actual crack because of the disadvantage that the crack path should be predicted and the element should be inserted. For this reason, the extended finite element method(XFEM), which predicts the path of cracks based on the directionality and specificity of stress, is emerging as a new solution in crack analysis. The validity of the XFEM application was confirmed by comparing the cohesive element analysis with the XFEM analysis by applying the crack path to the self - evident two - dimensional model. Numerical analysis confirms stress distribution and stress specificity immediately before crack initiation and compares it with actual crack initiation path. Based on this study, it is expected that cracks can be simulated by performing actual crack propagation analysis of complex models.

  • Finite element equations by using fast Fourier transformation were formulated for studying temperatures resulting from frictional heating in sliding systems. The equations include the effect of velocity of moving components. The program developed by using FFT-FEM that combines Fourier transform techniques and the finite element method, was applied to the sliding bearing system. Numerical prediction obtained by FFT-FEM was in an excellent agreement of experimental temperature measurements.

  • In this paper, finite element with embedded discontinuous line is introduced in order to avoid the difficulties of adding new nodal points along with crack growth in discrete crack model. With the discontinuous element using discontinuous shape function, stiffness matrix of finite element is derived and dual mapping technique for numerical integration is employed. Using the finite element program made with employed algorithms, algorithm is verified and fracture analysis of simple concrete beam is performed.
