This study has been performed to investigate the stress distribution around defects that behave as stress concentrators and fracture mechanical analysis for cracks initiatiating at stress concentrators. The stress distribution was analyzed using Finite Element Method and non dimensional stress intensity factor was determined by the mean stress method. In addition, stress interaction effects around defects and cracks were compared.

An efficient and useful method to improve the local stress field in a displacement-formulated finite element solution has been proposed using the theory of conjugate approximations for a stress field and the Loubignac's iterative method for a displacement field. Validity of the proposed method has been tested through three test examples, to improve the stress field and displacement field in the whole domain and the local regions. As a result of analysis on the test examples, it is found that the stress field in the local regions are approximated to those in the whole domain within a few iterations which have satisfied the original finite element equilibrium equation. In addition, it is found that the local stress field are by far better approximated to the exact stress field than the displacement-based stress field with the reduction of the finite-element mesh-size.

This paper proposes a residual stress mitigation of a nuclear safety-related austenitic stainless steel TP304 pipe bended by local induction heating process via performing elastic-plastic finite element analysis. Residual stress distributions of the pipe bend were calculated by performing finite element analysis. Validity of the finite element analysis procedure was verified via comparing with temperature histories measured by using thermocouples, ultrasonic thickness measurement results, and residual stress measurement results by a hole-drilling method. Parametric finite element stress analysis was performed to investigate effects of the process and geometric shape variables on the residual stresses on inner surfaces of the pipe by applying the verified procedure. As a result of the parametric analysis, it was found that it is difficult to considerably reduce the inner surface residual stresses by changing the existing process and geometric shape variables. So, in order to mitigate the residual stresses, effect of an additional process such as cooling after the bending on the residual stresses was investigated. Finally, it was identified that the additional heating after the bending can significantly reduce the residual stresses while other variables have insignificant effect.

In this paper, we discuss the cathode ray tube(CRT) glass bulb stress and sagging recovery by the contact band pressure using finite element method. We analyzed the band pressure and stress using contact element method between band and bulb before and after banding process which was conducted to decrease the stress concentration using finite element method, and calculated sagging recovery. The analysis results were confirmed by experiments using strain gauge and sagging recovery test apparatus.

To estimate the residual stresses in the thin film and surface coatings, combined method based on nanoindentation and finite element (FE) analysis was developed. A simple equation for estimating the residual stress was composed of the hardness and the parameters which can be driven from the nanoindentation loading and unloading behaviors. FE analysis on the nanoindentation procedure under the various residual stress levels was performed to determine the parameters that included in the equation. The equation showed a good coincidence between the estimated residual stresses and those for the FE analysis. Thus the proposed method was considered as a useful method for estimating the residual stresses in the thin film without stress free specimen.
Three dimensional numerical model based on the finite element method(FEM) were developed to predict the mechanical behavior of hip implants. The purpose of this study is to investigate the stress distribution of two types of cementless total hip replacement femoral component -a straight stem and a curved stem, and to compare their effect on the stress shielding between two types by three dimensional finite element method. The authors analyzed von Mises stress in the cortex & stem and compared the stress between the straight and the curved stem. In comparison of stresses between two different design of femoral stem, there was 25% more decrease of stress in straight stem than curved stem in the medial cortex at proximal region. The straight stem had consistently much lower stresses than the curved stem throughout the whole medial cortex with maximum 70% reduction of stress. However, there was little change in stress between nature and 2 implanted femur throughout the lateral cortex. Stress of femoral stem was much higher in the straight stem than the curved stem up to 60%. The straight stem had more chance of stress shielding and a risk of fatigue fracture of the stem compared with the curved stem in noncement hip arthroplasty. In design of femoral stem still we have to consider to develop design to distribute more even stress on the proximal medial cortex.

Recently, the box-girder bridge became quite popular because of the effectiveness of the box section against torsional deformation, and the finite element method has been one of the powerful and versatile method for obtaining the solution of box-girder bridge. The finite element method is used to solve a box girder which is built up with flat plates such as flanges, webs and diaphragm, and box girder is idealized by 8-nodes 2-dimensional isoparmetric finite element. To investigate the stress of diaphragm, substructure analysis is performed with two Parameters which are the location of support and slope of web.
In this paper crack propagation analyses in the dissimilar metal weldment of a nozzle were performed using a finite element alternating method (FEAM). A two-dimensional axisymmetric finite element nozzle model was prepared and welding simulation including the thermal heat transfer analysis and the thermal stress analysis was performed. Initial cracks were inserted at weld and heat affected zone in the finite element model which has welding residual stress distribution obtained from the welding simulation. To calculate crack propagation trajectories of these cracks, a new fatigue crack evaluation module was developed in addition to the previous FEAM program. With the new FEAM fatigue crack evaluation module, crack propagation trajectory and crack growth time were calculated automatically and effectively.

Finite element analysis tool was developed to analyze the casting process. Generally, casting processes consists of mold filling and solifification. In order to investigate the effects of process variables and to predict the defects, both filling and solidiffication process were simulated simultaneously. At filling process, especiallywe consider thermal coupling to investigate thermal history of material during the filling stage. And thermal condition at the final stage of filling is used as the initial conditions in a solidification process for the exact simulation of the actual casting processes. At mold filling process, Lagrangian-type finite element method with automatic remashing scheme was used to find the material flow. To avoid numerical instability in low viscous fluid, a perturbation method with artificial viscosity is adopted. At solififfication process, enthalpy-based finite element method was used to solve the heat transfer problem with phase change. And elastic stress analysis has been performed to predict the thermal residual stress. Through the FE analysis, solidiffication time, position of solidus line, liquidus line and thermal residual stress are studied. Finite element tools developed in this study will be used process design of casting process and maybe basic structure for total CAE system of castigs which will be constructed afterward.
It is desirable but difficult to predict springback quantitatively and accurately for successful tool and process design in sheet stamping operations. The result of springback analysis by the finite element method (FEM) is sensitively influenced by numerical factors such as blank element size, number of integration points, punch velocity, contact algorithm, etc. In the present work, a parametric study by Taguchi method is performed in order to evaluate the influence of numerical factors on the result of springback analysis quantitatively and to obtain the combination of numerical factors which gives the best approximation to experimental data. Since springback is determined by the residual stress after forming process, it is important to evaluate stress distribution accurately. The oscillation in the time history curve of stress obtained by the dynamic-explicit finite element method says that the stress solution at termination time is in very unstable state. Therefore, a variability study is also carried out in this study in order to assess the stability of implicit springback analysis starting from the stress solution by explicit forming simulation. The U-draw bending process, one of the NUMISHEET '93 benchmark problems, is adopted as an application model because it is most popular one for evaluating the springback characteristic.
