The crack-tip stress fields and fracture mechanics assessment parameters for a surface crack, such as the elastic stress intensity factor or the elastic-plastic J-integral, can be affected significantly by the adjacent cracks. Such a crack interaction effect due to multiple cracks can alter the fracture mechanics assessment parameters significantly. There are many factors to be considered, for instance the relative distance between adjacent cracks, the crack shape, and the loading condition, to quantify the crack interaction effect on the fracture mechanics assessment parameters. Thus, the current assessment codes on crack interaction effects (crack combination rules), including ASME Sec. XI, BS7910, British Energy R6 and API 579-1/ASME FFS-1, provide different rules for combining multiple surface cracks into a single surface crack. The present paper investigates crack interaction effects by evaluating the elastic stress intensity factor and the elastic-plastic J-integral of adjacent in-plane surface cracks in a plate through detailed 3-dimensional elastic and elastic-plastic finite element analyses. The effects on the fracture mechanics assessment parameters of the geometric parameters, the relative distance between two cracks, and the crack shape are investigated systematically. As for the loading condition, an axial tension is considered. Based on the finite element results, the acceptability of the crack combination rules provided in the existing guidance was investigated, and the relevant recommendations on a crack interaction for in-plane surface cracks are discussed. The present results can be used to develop more concrete guidance on crack interaction effects for crack shape characterization to evaluate the integrity of defective components.
Input data play an important role in numerical analyses. However, it is difficult to obtain appropriate data for many reasons. In order to overcome those difficulties, an automatic MPBX(Multi-Position Borehole Extensometer) monitoring system is developed. This system can be applied to the analyses of measured data which include evaluation of the stabiliyt, efficiency of construction and the validity of numerical analyses. At first, the MPBX among field measurement tools is considered in this study. Also, 3-dimension finite element analyses are carried out to verify the influence of geological conditions and excavation sequence on the MPBX displacement. The effect of geological conditons on the displacement can be estimated qualitatively qualitavely from the measured data by plotting displacement vs. depth.
The present study covers the optimal design for a lens module in a mobile phone camera by using the design of experiments (DOE) and finite element (FE) analysis. FE analyses are performed to investigate the effect of design parameters on the amount of torque required to assemble a barrel and a housing part. The DOE approach is then performed to optimize the design parameters in order to maintain an appropriate torque with less variations.

An automated dynamic structural analysis module stands as a crucial element within a structural integrated mitigation system. This module must deliver prompt real-time responses to enable timely actions, such as evacuation or warnings, in response to the severity posed by the structural system. The finite element method, a widely adopted approximate structural analysis approach globally, owes its popularity in part to its user-friendly nature. However, the computational efficiency and accuracy of results depend on the user-provided finite element mesh, with the number of elements and their quality playing pivotal roles. This paper introduces a computationally efficient adaptive mesh generation scheme that optimally combines the h-method of node movement and the r-method of element division for mesh refinement. Adaptive mesh generation schemes automatically create finite element meshes, and in this case, representative strain values for a given mesh are employed for error estimates. When applied to dynamic problems analyzed in the time domain, meshes need to be modified at each time step, considering a few hundred or thousand steps. The algorithm's specifics are demonstrated through a standard cantilever beam example subjected to a concentrated load at the free end. Additionally, a portal frame example showcases the generation of various robust meshes. These examples illustrate the adaptive algorithm's capability to produce robust meshes, ensuring reasonable accuracy and efficient computing time. Moreover, the study highlights the potential for the scheme's effective application in complex structural dynamic problems, such as those subjected to seismic or erratic wind loads. It also emphasizes its suitability for general nonlinear analysis problems, establishing the versatility and reliability of the proposed adaptive mesh generation scheme.

The structural analysis module is an essential part of any integrated structural system. Diverse integrated systems today require, from the analysis module, efficient real-time responses to real-time input such as earthquake signals, extreme weather-related forces, and man-made accidents. An integrated system may also be for the entire life span of a civil structure conceived during the initial conception, developed throughout various design stages, effectively used in construction, and utilized during usage and maintenance. All these integrated systems' essential part is the structural analysis module, which must be automated and computationally efficient so that responses may be almost immediate. The finite element method is often used for structural analysis, and for automation, many effective finite element meshes must be automatically generated for a given analysis. A computationally efficient finite element mesh generation scheme based on the r-h method of mesh refinement using strain deviations from the values at the Gauss points as error estimates from the previous mesh is described. Shape factors are used to sort out overly distorted elements. A standard cantilever beam analyzed by four-node plane stress elements is used as an example to show the effectiveness of the automated algorithm for a time-domain dynamic analysis. Although recent developments in computer hardware and software have made many new applications in integrated structural systems possible, structural analysis still needs to be executed efficiently in real-time. The algorithm applies to diverse integrated systems, including nonlinear analyses and general dynamic problems in earthquake engineering.

Pyramid type three roll bending machines are widely used in roll-bending process to produce singly curved plate. In forming singly curved plate, controlling the vertical displacement of the center roller is most important to acquire the shape required and automation system of the process. In this paper roller bending process is modeled as an elastic-plastic phenomenon and analyzed using beam theory and finite element method. In finite element analysis the workpiece is modeled by using beam elements and plane strain elements respectively. Through the analyses vertical center roller displacement is obtained to get constant curvature distribution along arc length. The relationship between center roller displacement and curvature in steady state as well as residual stress and strain along plate thickness direction are calculated through finite element analysis.

This paper describes lost motion analysis for a novel 6-DOF ultra-precision positioning stage. In the case of flexure hinge based precision positioning stage, lost motion is generated when the displacement of actuator is not delivered completely to the end-effector because of the elasticity of flexure hinge. Consequently, it is need to compute amount of lost motion to compensate the motion or to decide appropriate control method for precision positioning. Lost motion analysis for the vertical actuation unit is presented. The analysis results are presented in two ways: analytic and numerical analyses. It is found that they closely coincide with each other by 1% error. In finite element analysis result, the amount of lost motion is turned out to be about 3%. Although, the amount is not so large, it is necessary procedure to check the lost motion to establish the control method.

Development of a feed drive-system with high speed, positioning accuracy and thrust has been an important issue in modern automation systems and machine tools. Linear motors can be used as an efficient system to achieve such technical demands. By eliminating mechanical transmission mechanisms such as ball screw or rack-pinion, much higher speeds and greater acceleration can be achieved without backlash or excessive friction. However, due to great power loss and magnetic attraction of the linear motors heating and deflection problems occur. Therefore, it is necessary to design strong structure, cooling device with high efficiency and light weight construction in designing stage of linear motors. This paper presents an investigation into a structural design of linear motor system. In this research, a new concept of moving table with high stiffness and of cooling plate is also introduced. Structure analyses are performed by using a commercial code ANSYS in order to evaluate the design safety.

On the basis of detailed 3D finite-element (FE) limit analyses, the plastic limit load solutions for pipes with slanted circumferential through-wall cracks (TWCs) subjected to axial tension, global bending, and internal pressure are reported. The FE model and analysis procedure employed in the present numerical study were validated by comparing the present FE results with existing solutions for plastic limit loads of pipes with idealized TWCs. For the quantification of the effect of slanted crack on plastic limit load, slant correction factors for calculating the plastic limit loads of pipes with slanted TWCs from pipes with idealized TWCs are newly proposed from extensive 3D FE calculations. These slant-correction factors are presented in tabulated form for practical ranges of geometry and for each set of loading conditions.
The present paper investigates the collapse pressure of cylinders with intermediate thickness subjected to external pressure based on detailed elastic-plastic finite element (FE) analyses. The effect of the initial ovality of the tube on the collapse pressure was explicitly considered in the FE analyses. Based on the present FE results, the analytical yield locus, considering the interaction between the plastic collapse and local instability due to initial ovality, was also proposed. The collapse pressure values based on the proposed yield locus agree well with the present FE results; thus, the validity of the proposed yield locus for the thickness range of interest was verified. Moreover, the partial safety factor concept based on the structural reliability theory was also applied to the proposed collapse pressure estimation model, and, thus, the priority of importance of respective parameter constituting for the collapse of cylinders under external pressure was estimated in this study. From the application of the partial safety factor concept, the yield strength was concluded to be the most sensitive, and the initial ovality of tube was not so effective in the proposed collapse pressure estimation model. The present deterministic and probabilistic results are expected to be utilized in the design and maintenance of cylinders subjected to external pressure with initial ovality, such as the once-through type steam generator.
