  • Background and Objectives Although lasers have been widely applied in tissue treatment, the light penetration depth in tissues is limited by the tissue turbidity and affected by its absorption and scattering characteristics. This study investigated the effect of using an optical clearing agent (OCA) on tissue to improve the therapeutic effect of 1064 nm wavelength laser light by reducing the heat generated on the skin surface and increasing the penetration depth. Materials and Methods A diode laser (λ = 1064 nm) was applied to a porcine specimen with and without OCA to investigate the penetration depth of the laser light and temperature distribution. A numerical simulation using the finite element method was performed to investigate the temperature distribution of the specimen compared to ex-vivo experiments using a thermocouple and double-integrating sphere to measure the temperature profile and optical properties of the tissue, respectively. Results Simulation results showed a decrease in tissue surface temperature with increased penetration depth when the OCA was applied. Furthermore, both absorption and scattering coefficients decreased with the application of OCA. In ex-vivo experiments, temperatures decreased for the tissue surface and the fat layer with the OCA, but not for the muscle layer. Conclusion The use of an OCA may be helpful for reducing surface heat generation and enhance the light penetration depth in various near-infrared laser treatments.

  • Recently a construction of local cohomology functors for compactly generated triangulated categories admitting small coproducts is introduced and studied by Benson, Iyengar, Krause, Asadollahi and their coauthors. Following their idea, we introduce the depth of objects in such triangulated categories and get that when (R, m) is a graded-commutative Noetherian local ring, the depth of every cohomologically bounded and cohomologically finite object is not larger than its dimension.

  • The object of this paper is to compare stress intensity factor that be calculated by Raju-Newman's equation, finite element method, and Vessel INTegrity analysis inner flaws(VINTIN) program for longitudinal semi-elliptical cracks in cylindrical vessel under inner pressure. For this, three-dimensional finite-element analyses were performed to obtain the stress intensity factors for various surface cracks with t/R = 0.1. The finite element meshes were designed for various crack shapes with t/R of 0.1. The crack depth to thickness ratio, a/t, was set to 0.2 and 0.5 matching Raju-Newman's equation. The crack depth to length ratio, a/c, was set to 0.2 and 0.4 in the same way and 0.33 was added to extend the range of crack configuration. Finite Element Analyses(FEA) were performed using the commercial FEA program ABAQUS. The results showed that the Raiu-Newman solutions were about 4-10% lower than FEA's using symmetric model of one-eighth of a vessel and close to those of FEA using symmetric model or one-forth or a vessel. Ana VINTIN solutions were nearly equal to those or Raju-Newman.

  • The mechanical behavior of prestressed concrete haunched beams (PSHBs) was investigated in depth using a finite element modeling technique in this study. The efficiency of finite element modeling was investigated in the first stage by taking into account a previous study from the literature. The first stage's findings suggested that finite element modeling might be preferable for modeling PSHBs. In the second stage of the research, a comprehensive parametric study was carried out to determine the effect of each parameter on PSHB load capacity, including haunch angle, prestress level, compressive strength, tensile reinforcement ratio, and shear span to depth ratio. PSHBs and prestressed concrete rectangular beams (PSRBs) were also compared in terms of capacity. Stochastic analysis was used in the third stage to define the uncertainty in PSHB capacity by taking into account uncertainty in geometric and material parameters. Standard deviation, coefficient of variation, and the most appropriate probability density function (PDF) were proposed as a result of the analysis to define the randomness of capacity of PSHBs. In the study's final section, a new equation was proposed for using symbolic regression to predict the load capacity of PSHBs and PSRBs. The equation's statistical results show that it can be used to calculate the capacity of PSHBs and PSRBs.

  • Recently, the use of large-electron-beam polishing for polishing complex metal surfaces has been proposed. In this study, the temperature induced by a large electron beam was predicted using the heat transfer theory. A finite element (FE) model of a continuous wave (CW) electron beam was constructed assuming Gaussian distribution. The temperature distribution and melting depth of an SUS304 sample were predicted by changing electron-beam polishing process parameters such as energy density and beam velocity. The results obtained using the developed FE model were compared with experimental results for verifying the melting depth prediction capability of the developed FE model.

  • In the present study, the total hydrodynamic pressure exerted by the fluid on walls of rectangular tanks due to horizontal excitations of different frequencies, is investigated by pressure based finite element method. Fluid within the tanks is invisid, compressible and its motion is considered to be irrotational and it is simulated by two dimensional eight-node isoparametric. The walls of the tanks are assumed to be rigid. The total hydrodynamic pressure increases with the increase of exciting frequency and has maximum value when the exciting frequency is equal to the fundamental frequency. However, the hydrodynamic pressure has decreasing trend for the frequency greater than the fundamental frequency. Hydrodynamic pressure at the free surface is independent to the height of fluid. However, the pressure at base and mid height of vertical wall depends on height of fluid. At these two locations, the hydrodynamic pressure decreases with the increase of fluid depth. The depth of undisturbed fluid near the base increases with the increase of depth of fluid when it is excited with fundamental frequency of fluid. The sloshing of fluid with in the tank increases with the increase of exciting frequency and has maximum value when the exciting frequency is equal to the fundamental frequency of liquid. However, this vertical displacement is quite less when the exciting frequency is greater than the fundamental frequency.

  • Fracture of cusp, on posterior teeth, especially those carious or restored, is major cause of tooth loss. Inappropriate treatments, such as unnecessarily wide cavity preparations, increase the potential of further trauma and possible fracture of the remaining tooth structures. Fracture potential may be directly related to the stresses exerted upon the tooth during masticatory function. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the fracture resistance of tooth, restored with composite resin inlay. In this study, MOD inlay cavity prepared on maxillary first premolar and restored with composite resin inlay. Three dimensional finite element models with eight nodes isoparametric solid element, developed by serial grinding-photographing technique. These models have various occlusal isthmus and depth of cavity, 1/2, 1/3 and 1/4 of isthmus width and 0.7, 0.85 and 1.0 of depth of cavity. The magnitude of load was 474 N and 172 N as presented to maximal biting force and normal chewing force. These loads applied onto ridges of buccal and lingual cusp. These models analyzed with three dimensional finite element method. The results of this study were as follows : 1. There is no difference of displacement between width of occlusal isthmus and depth of cavity. 2. The stress concentrated at bucco-mesial comer, bucco-disal comer, pulpal line angle and the interface area between internal slopes of cusp and resin inlay. 3. The vector of stress direct to buccal and lingual side from center of cavity, to tooth surface going on to enamel. The magnitude of vector increase from occlusal surface to cervix. 4. The crack of tooth start interface area, between internal slop of buccal cusp and resin inlay. It progresses through buccopulpal line angle to cervix at buccomesial and buccodistal comer. 5. The influence with depth of cavity to fracture of tooth was more than width of isthmus. 6. It would be favorable to make the isthmus width narrower than a third of the intercuspal distance and depth of cavity is below 1 : 0.7.

  • The cutting thickness of ultra-precision machining is generally very small, only a few micrometer or even down to the order of a few nanometer. In such case, a basic understanding of the mechanism on the micro-machining process is is necessary to produce a high quality surface. When machining at very small depths of cut, metal flow near a rounded tool edge become important. In this paper a finite element analysis is presented to calculate the stagnation point on the tool edge or critical depth of cut below which no cutting occurs. From the simulation, the effects of the cutting speed on the critical depths of cut were calculated and discussed. Also the transition of the stagnation point according to the increase of the depths of cut was observed.

  • This paper presents a procedure within the framework of linear potential theory for predicting the lateral drifting forces on a cylinder floating on the free surface of a finite depth water. The disturbance of a regular incident wave caused by the presence of the floating body is represented by the sum of the diffracted and radiated wave potentials, which are determined by using Green's theorem. The lateral drifting forces are calculated by use of momentum theorem, and the scattered waves are expressed in their asymptotic forms. The computed lateral drifting forces on a Lewis form cylinder(b/T=1.25, $\sigma$=0.95) for water depth to draft ratio of 5.0 are compared with the Kyozuka's experimental results for a deep water, and found to be in good agreement. The water depth effects on drifting forces of the same model are also calculated.

  • To investigate the strengthening efficiency of the Near Surface Mounted Reinforcement (NSMR) technique analytically, a structural model for the finite element method (FEM) able to simulate accurately the experimental results was determined. Applying the finite element model, parametric analysis was performed considering the groove depth and spacing of CFRP laminates. Analytical study on the groove depth revealed the existence of a critical depth beyond which the increase of the ultimate load becomes imperceptible. Analytical results regard to the spacing of the CFRP laminates showed that comparatively smooth fluctuations of the ultimate load were produced by the variation of the spacing and the presence of an optimal spacing range for which relatively better strengthening efficiency can be obtained. Particularly, a spacing preventing the interference between adjacent CFRP laminates and the influence of the concrete cover at the edges as well as allowing the CFRP laminatesto behave independently was derived.
