  • Reinforcing bar splices are inevitable in reinforced concrete structure. In these days, there are three main types of splices used in reinforced concrete construction site - lapped splice, mechanical splice and welded splice. Low cost, practicality in construction site, less time consuming and high performance make gas pressure welding become a favorable splice method. However, reinforcing bar splice experiences thermal loading history during the welding procedure. This may lead to the presence of residual stress in the vicinity of the splice which affects the fatigue life of the reinforcing bar. Therefore, residual stress analysis and tensile test of the gas pressure welded splice are carried out in order to verify the load bearing capacity of the gas pressure welded splice. The reinforcing bar used in this work is SD400, which is manufactured in accordance with KS D 3504. The results show that the residual stresses in welded splice is relatively small, thus not affecting the performance of the reinforcing bar. Moreover, the strength of the gas pressure welded splice is high enough for the development of yielding in the bar. As such, the reinforcing bar with gas pressure welded splice has enough capacity to behave as continuous bar.

  • We propose a multi-state model to analyze semi-competing risks data with interval-censored or missing intermediate events. This model is an extension of the three states of the illness-death model: healthy, disease, and dead. The 'diseased' state can be considered as the intermediate event. Two more states are added into the illness-death model to incorporate the missing events, which are caused by a loss of follow-up before the end of a study. One of them is a state of the lost-to-follow-up (LTF), and the other is an unobservable state that represents an intermediate event experienced after the occurrence of LTF. Given covariates, we employ the Lin and Ying additive hazards model with log-normal frailty and construct a conditional likelihood to estimate transition intensities between states in the multi-state model. A marginalization of the full likelihood is completed using adaptive importance sampling, and the optimal solution of the regression parameters is achieved through an iterative quasi-Newton algorithm. Simulation studies are performed to investigate the finite-sample performance of the proposed estimation method in terms of empirical coverage probability of true regression parameters. Our proposed method is also illustrated with a dataset adapted from Helmer et al. (2001).

  • Elastic and elasto-plastic stress analyses of AlN/Cu and AlN/W pints produced by active-metal brazing method using Ag-Cu-Ti insert-metal were performed with use of Finite-Element-Method(FEM). The results of stress analyses were compared with those from the pint strength tests and the observations of fracture behaviors. It was shown that a remarkably larger maximum principal stress is built in the AlN/Cu pint compared to the A1N/ W joint. Especially, the stress concentration with tensile component was confirmed at the free surface close to the bonded interface of AlN/Cu. The elasto-plastic analysis under consideration of stress relaxation effect of Ag-Cu-Ti insert possessing a so-called 'soft-metal effect' showed that the insert leads to a lowering of maximum principal stress in AlNiCu pint, even though an increase of the insert thickness above 100$\mu\textrm{m}$ could not bring its further decrease. The maximum pint strengths measured by shear test were 52 and 108 MPa for AlNiCu and AlN/W pints. respectively. Typical fractures of AlN/Cu pints occurred in a form of 'dome' which initiated from the free surface of AlN close to the bonded interface and proceeded towards the AlN inside forming a large angle. AlN/W pints were usually fractured at AlN side along the interface of AlN/insert-metal.

  • Effect of Mo interlayer on the relaxation of residual stress in AlN/Cu pint bonded by active-metal brazing method was investigated. The stress analyses by finite-element-method, the measurement of pint strength and the observation of fracture surface were carried out and their results were compared with each other. From the results of stress analysis it is confirmed that a Mo interlayer led to a shift of maximum stress concentration site from AlN/insert-metal interface$\rightarro$ insert-metal/Mo$\rightarro$Mo interlayer. Additionally, with increase of the Mo interlayer thickness the stress concentration with tensile component was separately built both at the interface of Cu/Mo and AlN/Mo. whereby the residual stress in the free surface of AlN close to the bonded interface was drastically reduced. The AlN/Mo/Cu pints with Mo interlayer thickness of above 400$\mu\textrm{m}$ showed the strengths higher than 200 MPa. upto max. 275 MPa, while the AlN/Cu pint only max. 52 MPa.

  • The prediction performance of combustion models in the Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS) were evaluated by comparing with experiment for compartment propane gas fires. The mixture fraction model in the FDS v5.5.3 and Eddy Dissipation Concept (EDC) model in the FDS v6.6.3 were adopted in the simulations. Four chemical reaction mechanisms, such as 1-step Mixing Controlled, 2-step Mixing Controlled, 3-step Mixing Controlled and 3-step Mixed (Mixing Controlled + finite chemical reactions) reactions, were implemented in the EDC model. The simulation results with each combustion model showed similar level for the temperature inside the compartment. The prediction performance of FDS with each combustion model showed significant differences for the CO concentration while no distinguished differences were identified for the $O_2$ and $CO_2$ concentrations. The EDC 3-step Mixing Controlled largely over-predicted the CO concentration obtained by experiment and the mixture fraction model under-predicted the experiment slightly. The EDC 3-step Mixed showed the best prediction performance for the CO concentration and the EDC 2-step Mixing Controlled also predicted the CO concentration reasonably. The EDC 1-step Mixing Controlled significantly under-predict the experimental CO concentration when the previously suggested CO yield was adopted. The FDS simulation with the EDC 1-step Mixing Controlled showed difficulties in predicting the $CO_2$ concentration when the CO yield was modified to predict the CO concentration reasonably.

  • Numerical simulations of free surface flow over a broad-crested rectangular weir are conducted by using the volume of fraction (VOF) method and three different turbulence models, the k-${\varepsilon}$, RNG k-${\omega}$ and k-${\omega}$ SST models. The governing equations are solved by a second-order accurate finite volume method and the grid sensitivity study of solutions is carried out. The numerical results are evaluated by comparing the solutions with experimental and numerical results of Kirkgoz et al. (2008) and some non-dimensionalized experimental results obtained by Moss (1972) and Zachoval et al. (2012). The results show that the present numerical model can reasonably reproduce the experimental results, while three turbulent models yield different numerical predictions of two distinct zones of flow separation, the first zone is in front of the upstream edge of the weir and the second is created immediately behind the upstream edge of the weir where the flow is separated to form the separation bubble. The standard k-${\varepsilon}$ model appears to significantly underestimate the size of both separation zones and the k-${\omega}$ SST model slightly over-estimates the first separation zone in front of the weir. The RNG k-${\varepsilon}$ model predicts both separation zones in overall good agreement with the experimental measurement, while the k-${\omega}$ SST model yields the best numerical prediction of separation bubble at the upstream edge of the weir.

  • The purpose of the paper Is to discuss and estimate early Popper's theory of probability, which is presented in his book, The Logic of of Scientific Discovery. For this, Von Mises' frequency theory shall be discussed in detail, which is regarded as the most systematic and sophisticated frequency theory among others. Von Mises developed his theory to response to various critical questions such as how finite and empirical collectives can be represented in terms of infinite and mathematical collectives, and how the axiom of randomness can be mathematically formulated. But his theory still has another difficulty, which is concerned with the inconsistency between the axiom of convergence and the axiom of randomness. Defending the objective theory of probability, Popper tries to present his own frequency theory, solving the difficulty. He suggests that the axiom of convergence be given up and that the axiom of randomness be modified to solve Von Mises' problem. That is, Popper introduces the notion of ordinal selection and neighborhood selection to modify the axiom of randomness. He then shows that Bernoulli's theorem is derived from the modified axiom. Consequently, it can be said that Popper solves the problem of inconsistency which is regarded as crucial to Von Mises' theory. However, Popper's suggestion has not drawn much attention. I think it is because his theory seems anti-intuitive in the sense that it gives up the axiom of convergence which is the basis of the frequency theory So for more persuasive frequency theory, it is necessary to formulate the axiom of randomness to be consistent with the axiom of convergence.

  • Purpose: To develop the 2~8X zoom beam expander for the 1064 nm laser source. Methods: After developing the program by which the initial design values of 3-component zoom tracks can be quickly obtaind, we design and develop the zoom beam expander by applying this program and the commercial program of Sigma 2000. Results: In this study, we could develop the program by which the initial design values of zoom tracks can be quickly obtaind, and by applying this program and the commercial program of Sigma 2000 we could design and develop the zoom beam expander for 1064 nm which is able to zoom from 2${\times}$ to 8${\times}$. The developed zoom beam expander has an efficient diameter of the incidence side of 8 mm, an efficient diameter of the exit side of 32 mm, and a capacity with the finite ray aberration within 0.0001rad. Because the overall length (OAL) is restricted between 125 mm and 135 mm, the change of the whole barrel length which is caused by variations of the zoom driving becomes to be within 10 mm. Conclusions: we could develop the program by which the initial design values of zoom tracks can be quickly obtaind, and by applying this program we could design and develop the zoom beam expander for 1064 nm which is able to zoom from 2${\times}$ to 8${\times}$.

  • The typical truss-lattice material successively packed by repeated cubic symmetric unit cells consists of sub-elements (SE) proposed in this study. The representative continuum model for this truss-lattice material such as the effective strain and stress relationship can be formulated by the homogenization procedure based on the notation of averaged mechanical properties. The volume fractions of micro-scale struts have a significant influence on the effective strength as well as the relative density in the lattice plate with replicable unit cell structures. Most of the strength contribution in the lattice material is induced by axial stiffness under uniform stretching or compression responses. Therefore, continuum based constitutive models composed of homogenized member stiffness include these mechanical characteristics with respect to strength, internal stress state, material density based on the volume fraction and even failure modes. It can be also recognized that the stress state of micro-scale struts is directly associated with the continuum constitutive model. The plastic flow at the micro-scale stress can extend the envelope of the analytical stress function on the surface of macro-scale stress derived from homogenized constitutive equations. The main focus of this study is to investigate the basic topology of unit cell structures with the cubic symmetric system and to formulate the plastic models to predict pressure dependent macro-scale stress surface functions.

  • Interpretations of 3-component magnetic logging data obtained for a reinforced bar as a model of the line of the magnetic dipoles are conducted using a least squared inversion technique. The length of the bar is 1.12 m, sampling interval is 0.05 m, the distance between the bar and the borehole is 0.3 m, and the top of the bar is fixed at 0 m of depth. The bar is set to be approximately vertical. Magnetic anomalies smoothed with FFT are used as input data for the inversion. For the interpretation of magnetic logging data the depth to the top, the length, the magnetic moment per unit length, the direction of the magnetization (declination and inclination), and the bearing and plunge of the line of magnetic dipoles are left as unknown parameters. The comparison of the results obtained from the individual inversion of the horizontal component or the vertical component of the magnetic anomalies, and those from the simultaneous inversion of horizontal and vertical component of the magnetic anomalies shows that there exist some disagreements between each inversion result. The depth to the bottom of the bar, which is actually 1.12 m, is estimated as 1.18 m, and the inclination of the magnetization is estimated as -76°by simultaneous inversion. The negative value of the inclination indicates that the strength of the remnant magnetization is much greater than that of the induced magnetization, so that the direction of the resultant magnetization points to the top of the bar.
