  • Silk/cotton fabrics were treated with butanetetracarboxylic acid(BTCA) under various treating conditions such as concentration, treated time and curing temperatures. Bending property, tensile strength, wrinkle recovery angle, and shrinkage were measured. The BTCA concentration in the saponfication mixture was measured by an isocratic HPLC equipped with the strong cationic exchange column Aminex HPX-87-H and a UV detector. The detected concentration of BTCA was shown in silk side much more than that of cotton side. The bending and shrinkage properties were improved at minimum curing condition and the lower concentration of BTCA. Tensile strength decreased with increasing concentration of BTCA, curing temperature and treated time, while wrinkle recovery angle increased.

  • This study was to investigate the physical properties and the external characteristics of denim fabrics(100% cotton non-spun denim, 98% cotton/2% polyurethane spun denim) such as tensile strength, thickness and weight, flex stiffness, surface color and shrinkage. The results of the study were as follows. After examining the change of external characteristics of before and after washing finishing for denim fabrics, denim with bio washing had increased pliability compared to denim without washing finishing but the pliability of the denim did not increase according to the intensity or frequency of washing. The luminance change according to washing finishing was high in the order of bio stone bleach washing, bio stone washing, bio washing and denim without washing finishing and the surface color became brighter in accordance with the increase of intensity and frequency of washing finishing.

  • The bending properties, wrinkle resistance, and fabric retention behaviors of cotton knitted fabrics in the wale and course directions were studied for their dependence upon resin finishing, knit structure, and washing cycles. Stiffness, wrinkle recovery angles, and dimensional stability were investigated before and after resin finishing and laundering. It has been found that any change in the physical properties of the knitted fabrics with respect to knit structure and fabric directions are related to accompanying modifications to the state of the fiber properties. The decrease of fabric shrinkage rates and wrinkle recovery properties from increasing laundering cycles is related with resin incorporated on the fiber surface. This study shows that resin finishing on knitted fabrics can be performed only to improve fabric retention properties with reduced wrinkle recovery properties.

  • Recently, prepackaged-type surface preparation materials using redispersible polymer powders are widely used for interior and exterior finishing in the construction work. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the performance and the quality of prepackaged-type surface preparation materials using a VA/E/MMA terpolymer powder. Surface preparation materials using a VA/E/MMA terpolymer powder were prepared with shrinkage reducing agent contents of 0, 4 % and cellulose fiber contents of 0, 0.5, 1.0 %, and tested for drying shrinkage, strengths, adhesion in tension, crack and impact resistance, water absorption, permeability. As a result, prepackaged-type surface preparation materials show outstanding performance depending on the shrinkage reducing agent and cellulose fiber contents.

  • Interlace textured yarn was developed in order to increase weaving process efficiency. Today, interlace texturing is very useful method of manufacturing the high added value compound yarns for new synthetic fabrics. In this research, new silky type high added value compound yarns were. manufactured by interlace texturing technology and tested their properties. The object of this research is to investigate the relationship between interlace textured yarn properties and processing parameters that is air pressure, yarn tension and take-up speed. The original filament yarns used were TTD(Thick & Thin Semi-Dull) 110d/72f and SCD(Semi-Dull Cation Dyeable) 75d/36f. 27 specimens were manufactured and tested for their physical properties-nip density, tensile properties, multi-step shrinkage test and surface structure by SEM. The air pressure was main process condition to change properties of interlace textured yarns. And interlace textured process had influence on weaving preparation process, weaving, knitting and so on. It has some influence on shrinkage properties of dyeing and finishing processes.

  • The shrinkproof-finished wool fibers treated with resin coating and chlorination methods were used to find out an optimal shrinkproof finishing method keeping the quality properties of wool fabric to manufacturers. Shrinkage during repeated washing, electrostatic propensity, thermal resistance and pilling propensity of shrinkproof-finished wool knits, and analysis of finishing methods were measured. Upon the results from the surface examination of shrinkproof-finished wool fibers, the patterns of scale layer and degree of scale removal were subject to change according to the finishing processes. The shrink resistance was significantly enhanced on repeated washing of shrinkproof-finished knits, especially, chlorinated wool. Addition of strong physical force and alkali detergent applied in this washing experiment brought about superior effects with the low shrinkage rate although it was very severe washing conditions for wool fabrics. The results from the washing experiment implies that shrinkproof-finished knitted fabrics can be machine washed at individual households with other ordinary laundry. There was some changes and variation found in thermal resistance, electrostatic propensity, and pilling, however, it seems to be minor within standard limits. Therefore, shrinkproof-finished knitted fabrics did not bring serious changes to other physical properties comparing with original wool, which helps consumers handle wool knitted clothes more conveniently.

  • Cotton fabrics were treated with some commercial non-formaldehyde and low-formaldehyde resins, and then their effect on the physicochemical properties were respectively investigated including formaldehyde release, tear strength, shrinkage, and wrinkle recovery. Formaldehyde release less than 10ppm was obtained only by non-formaldehyde resin. Considering other factors, the optimal concentration of non-formaldehyde resin was shown to be 9-11%. In case of low-formaldehyde type, 5-7% resin concentration and curing temperature of $160{\sim}170^{\circ}C$ were recommended for optimal finishing condition. The choice and combination of resins and catalysts were also important factors, and preliminary considerations before treating cotton fabrics with resins used in this study are also important to get much better results.

  • Shrink resist finishing of wool fabric was carried out with Monoethanol aminesulphite (MONAMIN BTN) shrink resist agent after chlorination with Dichloro isocyanuric acid (DCCA). The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of treating conditions, such as concentrations of DCCA and MONAMIN BTN, pH of treating bath, dyeing times, curing times and temperatures, on dyeing property of wool fabrics. K/S values and fastness properties of dyed wool fabrics were measured. The K/S values of dyed fabrics were increased gradually with increasing concentration, and decreased with increasing curing time. The optimum dyeing time and curing temperature were 60 min and $140^{\circ}C$, respectively. Also it seems likely that the shrink resist finishing carried out at 3% (o.w.f.) of MONAMIN BTN and pH 7 of resin treating bath is effective in increasing K/S values. Light fastness of fabric dyed was very poor and the fastness of fabric dyed was not influenced by the treatment conditions.
