  • The mechanical strength is the prime requisite for linerboard and corrugating mediums. Repeatedly recycled OCC fibers show less suitable property for papermaking mostly due to hornification and reduced fiber length. To overcome these problems many researches including fractionation, enzymatic treatment, and chemical or mechanical treatments of fibers have been carried out. In this study, the effect of mechanical treatment by high consistency pulping on the characteristics of recycled fibers as well as mechanical properties of sheets were investigated. Results on the strength properties of handsheets made of recycled fibers that were treated to same freeness level by beating and high consistency pulping, respectively, showed that beating treatment was more efficient in improving strength. Drainage and recycling potential of the fibers treated by high consistency pulping, however, were expected to be superior to beating because fines content and fiber length didn't change significantly.

  • LbL multilayering technology introduced by Decher is a nano technique that a substrate surface is layered by the successive deposition of polyelectrolytes with positive and negative charge. We investigated the electrochemical properties of LbL multilayered pulp fibers with poly-DADMAC and PSS. Three types of pulp-Hw-BKP, BCTMP and KOCC- were treated with polyelectrolytes. Zeta potentials of multilayered fibers ranged from +30 mV to +40 mV, depending on the intial zeta potential of pulp fibers and fines content. All kinds of pulp which were examined in this study, however, showed a similar zeta potential of -35 mV after layering with PSS. To obtain pulp fiber with a uniform and stable zeta potential, BCTMP and KOCC pulp fibers should be multilayered above 5 times. The addition level of polyelectrolytes had little influence on the zeta potential of pulp fibers.

  • We studied on the effects of the enzyme treatment of pulp fiber on physical properties of coated paper were elucidated using four types of enzymes. The results of this study showed that the blank in which enzyme was not treated showed the highest $St{\ddot{o}}ckigt$ and Hurcules sizing degrees. And when the enzyme treated base paper was used for coating, the coated paper has average 5.7 % higher gloss and whiteness than when untreated base paper was used. Brightness showed 0.12 % higher results with the enzyme treated base papers than the blank while it is considered to show similar trends. Whiteness of coated paper was not influenced by the enzyme treatments but by the properties of coating color. Coated paper whose base paper was enzyme treated showed improved roughness while smoothness of those samples except the ${\beta}$-Glucosidase treated one was relatively low due to the high fines content. Also the coated paper whose base paper was not enzyme treated showed high porosity.

  • In this study, chemical and physical changes of dissolving pulps which have similar viscosity by dry milling and fractionation were investigated. We used two types of dissolving pulp made from wood and cotton linter fiber, respectively. Dry milling was executed by knife cutter and pulp powders were fractionated by sieve shaker into 4 grades. We analyzed fiber properties, crystallinity index, viscosity, molecular weight of pulp sheet and powders. It was found that poly-dispersity index of cotton linter pulp was smaller than that of wood pulp, meaning that cotton pulp has more narrow molecular weight distribution. It was assumed that these were related to exposure times to chemical treatment which cut cellulose chains not evenly. At least 4 times of chemical treatments for wood pulp were executed and only two times of chemical treatments for cotton linter pulp were done. After dry milling average molecular weight and crystallinity index of cotton linter pulp powders were reduced and these were related to fines content and shape of pulp powders.

  • This paper is interested in the incorporation of crushed sand and desert sand in the composition the self compacting concretes (SCC). Desert dune sand, which has a fine extra granulometry, and the crushed sand, which contains an important content of fines, can constitute interesting components for SCC. Part II consists in studying the behaviour of SCC containing various sands with different origins. These sands, with different sizes, consist of several combinations of rolled sand (RS), crushed sand (CS) and desert sand (DS). The study examines the influence of the granular combination of sands on the characteristics in the fresh and the hardened state of SCC. The results of the experimental tests showed an improvement of the workability of the fresh SCC by combining sands of varied granulometry. The addition of the DS to CS or to RS allowed the increase of the mixture viscosity but decreased the mechanical strengths. Furthermore, the CS-RS combinations increased the compressive and the tensile strengths of the studied SCC. The optimized formulations of sands gave the highest performances of the SCC.

  • The purposes of this paper are to study the use possibility of geotextile tubes for dewatering of high water content sludges and sediments and to evaluate affecting factors on dewatering. To do this, pressure filtration tests are conducted on four high water content materials with two geotextiles under two filtration pressures. Based on the test results, although woven geotextile tubes are not satisfied the soil retention criteria used in filter design commonly, a great portion of fines are retained by filter cake formation on geotextile tube's upstream side, but also after formation of filter cake, the permeability drops sharply. Higher filtration pressure tends to increase dewatering rate, but has very little effect on filtration efficiency. Dewatering capacity is affected by several factors which are related to the geotextile, but the property of sludge appears to be the dominant control factor for dewatering efficiency.

  • The factors of landslides depend on rainfall intensity, duration, and the characteristics of the soil slope. The conventional slope stability analysis has been carried out by assuming that the slope is saturated. But, a site slope consisting of unsaturated ground must be imitated and interpreted in order to explain a proper behavior of the slope due to rainfall. In this study, by using two major categories of soils in Korea, such as granite and gneiss weathered soils, landslide model test and numerical analysis have been compared with the difference of seepage and volumetric water content. In general, the permeability of gneiss weathered soil, which contains a lot of fines content, is slower than that of granite weathered soil. As a result, in extreme rainfall, numerical analysis can show results that can penetrate quickly, resulting in saturation or more dangerous collapse.

경제적일 것으로 판단된다.er 90 % of good relative dynamic modulus of elasticity due to fineness of formation caused by the increase of the unit powder content and the improvement of flowability, without regard to the replacement of crushed stone fines. • The characteristics of resilient modulus(Mr) which dominates the life of pavement and the design of pavement were investigated on the test specimens which were cement treated and non-treated of the three different soil types. The results are summarized as follows : 1. The resilient modulus was decreased by increasing the cyclic deviator stress ($\sigma$d) , especially the resilient modulus was gradually decreased or sometimes increased when the value of ad was greater than 0.75- 1. 0kg/cm$^2$. 2. The resilient modulus was increased by increasing the homogeneous confined stress ($\sigma$do) and such phenomena were distinct on the coarse soils. 3. The resilient modulus was increased by increasing the ratio of confined stress(Kc), and this phenomena were eminent on the coarse soils too, and the higher permanent strain was showed by increasing the value of Kc. 4. In the drained cyclic triaxial compression test, the value of ad, Kc, and (Oho) was introduced by the following interrelated equations which were similar to the Mr model of Cole. Kcn/Mr=K1(J$_2$/ $\tau$oct)K2 ............. (coarse soli) Mcn/Mr=K3($\sigma$dp/ $\tau$f)k4 ...............(fine soils) 5. The stress path was not much affected by the value of Mr, however, moisture content, dry desity, and contant of fines affected the value of Mr. 6. In the soil-cement specimens, the resilient compression strain($\varepsilon$d) was decreased by the increment of the $\sigma$ho, and Mr was decreased by increasing the $\sigma$d 7. In the flexible pavement. the cement treated layer should be designed not to fail by the fatigue before the designed traffic load, and actually the pavement could cover the traffic load to a certain extent under the post-crack phase, therefore farther studies on this phenomena' are required in the design analysis. 8. The finite element computer program (ANALYS) was used for displacement analysis of pavement containing the cement-treated layer, The result showed that the program used for this analysis was proved to be usable.

  • It is very important to utilize effectively fibrous waste paper in terms of cost savings, environmental effects, and governmental policies. The quality of final products and runnability of papermaking process are primarily affected by constitutions of fibrous raw materials. In specific, board grade paper depends directly on compositions of waste paper bales. At present, the raw materials of board grade paper are mainly derived from lots kinds of wastepaper. Some papermaking countries, like EU, USA and Japan have advanced classification and management systems of recycled fiber, but Korea has not yet organized systematically. In this study, evaluation of wastepaper bale compositions and their fiber properties were carried out for effective utilization of fibrous raw materials for board grade paper production. 3 kinds of wastepaper bales were classified to fibrous or non-fibrous materials. In case of fibrous materials, KOCC, kraft sack paper and white duplex board matters were main component in total weight basis, and in case of non-fibrous materials, vinyl, plastic and cloth matters were main component, in turns. 3 representative kinds of waste paper were disintegrated and classified, and then prepared to handsheet for evaluation of recycled fiber property. Consequently, fines and ash content of waste paper, isolated from KOCC and white duplex board were higher than that of kraft sack paper. pH values of all kinds of waste fibers were neutral or weak alkaline.
