The surface sediment distribution in a tidal flat in 2001 was compared with that of 2008 using high spatial resolution remote sensing images and a GIS-based analysis. Maps of the surface sedimentary facies for each time frame were induced by an IKONOS data acquired in February, 2001 and a KOMPSAT-2 data acquired in April, 2008 using an object-based classification method. The area ratio of each surface sedimentary facies were estimated, and the results were compared each other for deducing the change in the sedimentary facies during the time interval. The result showed that the percentage of grains larger than very fine sand (0.0625 mm) has increased considerably since the early 2000s in the Hwangdo tidal flat. Mud flat facies has decreased 5.81 % in the late 2000s compared with the early 2000s. However, mixed flat and sand flat have increased 4.46% and 2.14%, respectively. A field campaign also supported the result. This study showed that the monitoring of changes in the surface sedimentary facies in the tidal flat is possible through a GIS-based analysis using high spatial resolution remote sensing images.

In the present study, we surveyed the molluscan fauna in a lagoon located near Seong-san harbor on the east coast of Jeju Island in July 2012. For the survey, a $25{\times}25cm$ quadrat was deployed over 3 randomly selected sites in the intertidal area of the lagoon. Sediment from the surface to a depth of 25 cm in the quadrat was removed and sieved using a 1 mm mesh sieve. All molluscan fauna retained on the sieve was identified to the species level. From the survey, 25 species of mollusca belonging to 2 orders and 16 families were identified. Species richness, in terms of total number of species, was found to be the highest at sampling site 1, where the substrate was composed of coarse sand and some rocks, while it was lowest at sampling site 3, composed of compact fine sand. Regardless of the type of substrate at the sampling sites, the mud-creeping snail Batillaria cumingii (Crosse, 1862) occurred at a high density, ranging from $324-468ind./m^2$. The luciniid bivalve Pillucina pisidium also occurred at a high density at sampling site 1, at $336ind./m^2$, while the density of this species was only $4ind./m^2$ at sampling site 3. The Manila clam Ruditapes philippinarum could be found at all 3 sampling sites with very low density ranging from $16-48ind./m^2$. The density and species richness of molluscs observed in this study was lower compared to the previously reported molluscan fauna in Jeju Island, suggesting that further investigation needs to be carried out to conserve the unique marine lagoon ecosystem in Jeju Island.

To certificate change in the geochemical characteristics of surface sediments in the main stream of the Nakdong River, surface sediments from 12 sampling sites during the first and second half year (total 24 sampling sites) were collected and analyzed for grain size, ignition loss, total organic carbon and heavy metal content. Surface sediments mainly composed of sand (coarse and medium sand) and fining changed from the first half to the second half of the year. Ignition loss, total organic carbon and heavy metals content increased in the second half of the year. Some heavy metals (Zn, Ni and Cu) were found to be at the lowest effect levels according to Ontario sediment quality guidelines. Additionally, most heavy metals were found to be at the non polluted level and level I according to USEPA sediment quality standards and National Institute of Environmental Research sediment pollution evaluation standard, respectively. The enrichment factor (< 1) and index of geoaccmulation (< 0) were non polluted in the study area. The correlation analysis results showed that ignition loss, total organic carbon and heavy metal content were highly correlated with grain size. Regarding changes in geochemical characteristics of surface sediments in the study area, grain size fine and organic matter and heavy metal content increased in the second half year. Nonetheless these results indicated pollution levels that did not adversely affect the benthos.
Biogeochemistry of a 34-year-old red pine plantation on a Typic Udipsamment was investigated in the central sand plains of Wisconsin Biomass and net primary production were $106Mg\;ha^{-1}$ and $11.0Mg\;ha^{-1}y^{-1}$ respectively. Concentrations of elements in the vegetation were greatest in the 2- to 3-year-old needles, followed by current needles, current twigs, bole bark, live branches, dead branches, bolewood production, and bolewood. For a given tree component (excluding the current twigs), elemental concentrations were greatest in the upper one- third and least in the lower one- third of the tree. Total elements in the vegetation are ranked: N($222kg\;ha^{-1}$), Ca(217), K (85), Mg(38), S(31), and p. The soil contained from 60 to 89% of the readily available P, K, Ca, Mg, and S in the ecosystem. Whereas precipitation was the major source of N and S, weathering supplied the bulk of the Ca, Mg, P, and K. Output of a given element by leaching was less than $7kg\;ha^{-1}y^{-1}$ except for S which was $12kg\;ha^{-1}y^{-1}$ Whereas throughfall returned the greatest amounts of N, K, and S to the forest floor, litterfall accounted for the greatest returns of Ca, Mg, and P. Because of foliar leaching, net loading of all elements studied in the throughfall exceeded that of the precipitation. Ammonium in net precipitation was reduced by a factor of three within the upper 7.5cm due to uptake by fine roots.
This research has been done to investigate influence of soil physical and chemical properties on forest environmental change by fired pine forest in Koseong, Kangwondo. The sample sites were divided by not-fired sites(NF), not-cutting site after fired(FNC), cutting and planting sites after fired(FCP) and cutting and not-planting sites after fired(FC). Soil texture of whole sites was sandy clay loam. Sand content of NF top soil were lower than those of sub soil and clay content were higher, while FNC, FCP and FC sand content of top soil were higher than those of sub soil. Total porosity didn't differ between the sites. Coarse porosity and permeability had the increasing order as NF> FNC> FCP> FC, but fine porosity and bulk density had the opposite trends. Because forest fire removed the vegetation and then soil erosion was accelerated, forest environmental changes by forest fire greatly degraded soil porosity and permeability which were indices for forest water retention, so that soil physical properties were deteriorated. Both top and sub soil pHs of NF and FNC were higher than those of FCP and FC. Organic matter content and total nitrogen content of top and sub soils were high in order as NF> FNC> FCP> FC. Cation exchange capacities and exchangeable cation(K+, Na+, $Ca^2$+, $Mg^2$+) content in top soils were higher than those in sub soils, and in order as NF> FNC> FCP> FC, to be compared by the sites. Those mean that forest fire result from the erosion of top soil layers.

There is an increasing trend of construction works in mountainous areas by the urban development in Busan that is mainly composed of mountains. The study area, Hwangryeong Mt., is one of developing sites in the urban area, too. Landslides and cut-slope failures that occur large damages of human beings and the properties are influenced by soil characteristics as well as rock properties. This study analyzed geotechnical characteristics of soil dependent on geology at Hwangryeong Mt. where a large slope failure had been occurred in 1999. Geology of the study area is composed of the Cretaceous sedimentary rocks and volcanic rocks. Soil layer of the slopes can be grouped into sand mixed with clay and silt. The cohesion is plotted between $0.001\;and\;0.066kg/cm^2$. The friction angles are distributed in the ranges between $32^{\circ}\;and\;39^{\circ}$, meaning soil bearing a high friction angle. The permeability coefficients are plotted between $2.34\times10^{-4}cm/sec\;and\;2.58\times10^{-2}cm/sec$, indicating fine sand and loose silt with a medium grade of permeability. The sedimentary rocks area shows relatively higher permeability coefficients than those volcanic rocks area.
Effect of substrate composition, stocking density and food organisms on survival and growth of the surf clam, Spisula sachalinensis was studied. Spat collection from the substratum was the highest, when its sand size was less than 250 $\mu m4; at such substratum, survival and growth of the surf clam were also the highest. The spat (1.4 mm) grew to 4.6 mm and 8.2 mm in shell length on day 30 and 50, respectively. The relationship between shell length (SL) and shell height (SH), shell breadth (SB), total weight (TW) and shell weight (SW) of the spat are formulated by the following equations; SH : 0.7351SL+0.2272 ( $r^2$ =0.9600)i SB = 0.4037SL+0.2112 ($r^2$ = 0.9452); TW : 0.2824SL^{2.7020} ($r^2$ = 0.9820)i SW = $0.4021SL^{2.0217} ($r^2$ : 0.6169). In the substratum containing fine sand, growth and survival of the clam roared at the density of 1~2 ind./$cm^2$ were optimal. The quality of feed decreases in the following order; C. calcitrans, mixture group, I. galbana, P. lutheri, T. suecica.

For recycling of waste foundry sands, researchers recently try to recycle them rather than depend on reclamation, and are studying on how to combine waste foundry sands with cement and use them for various kinds of construction material as the effective recycling method of waste foundry sand. In this research, The ways to find the proper replacement rate of waste foundry sands and to make use of them were suggested through the experiments on the range to apply waste foundry sands with two levels of 1:3 mixture rate of W/C 43% and 50%. The research result showed that in terms of liquidity as the characteristic of unhardened mortar, as the replacement rate of waste foundry sands increased, its flow tended to decrease. The amount of air also displayed a similar tendency to that of liquidity in that the higher the replacement rate of waste foundry sands became, the lower it became. With regard to the solidity trait of hardened mortar, it increased when the waste foundry sands were replaced more, and the replacement of waste foundry sands caused increased initial solidity. As for the amount of water permeated and that of water absorbed as the water tight proofing properties, the amount of permeated water was proved to decrease because of the gap recharge effect by the fine powder of waste foundry sands, and the replacement of waste foundry sands in the structures requiring watertightness is concluded to be very effective.
The soil textures and chemical compositions of Tapes Philippinarum beds were investigated in order to estimate the grade of the habitat soil of T. Philippinarum for the improvement of natural tidal flats. The coefficients of correlation between tile percentages of debris, coarse sand, fine sand, silt, and clay of the habitat soil, and the population density of T. Philippinarum were 0.78, 0.73, -0.42, -0.68, and -0.51 respectively. And the optimum levels of same were above $13.5\%,\;above\;23.0\%\;below\;41.5\%,\;below\;10.0\%$, and below $6.8\%$ respectively The $SiO_2\;Al_2O_3+Fe_2O_3$ ratio of the soil of T. Philippinarum beds showed the range of 5.09 to 5.60. The levels of soil pH, water holding capacity, organic matter, total nitrogen, available phosphorus, exchangeable magnesium were 6.15-6.60, $4.26-6.86\%$, $0.40-1.10\%$ 14.0-27.0 ppm, $0.041-0.394\%,\;and\;0.009-0.132\%$ respectively.
The Iho and Hamdeok beaches, the major coastal beaches in Jeju Island, have been studied through size analysis and using an experimental extension pole and sediment trap in beach profile, in order to understand their textural characteristics, migration patterns, and seasonal change in beach geometry. The Iho beach is composed of coarse and medium sands, 590 m in total length. The foreshore slope is 12.3$^{\circ}$ in summer and 10.8$^{\circ}$ in winter, which shows more steeper in summer. The Hamdeok beach consisting mostly of shell fragments is 950 m long, $5.7{\sim}7.4^{\circ}$ steep and 97.4${\sim}$114.5 m wide, respectively. The suspended load drift concentrations in the studied beaches showed 4.5 mg/l during the period of summer and 33.2 mg/l in winter, and those of fine-grained sediments are derived mostly from the marine of northeastward direction. The typical beach transformation of the Iho beach is resulting from the construction of jetties in the west side that built up the sand inside the jetties, whereas the erosion is occurring on the east side of beach. The center and berm sides of the sand in the Hamdeok beach drift into the dune side during the period of the stormy winter season.
