The knowledge of grain growth of carbide particles is very important for manufacturing micrograined cemented carbides. In the present study, continuous and discontinuous grain growth in WC-Co and WC-VC-Co cemented carbides is investigated using the Monte Carlo computer simulation technique. The Ostwald ripening process (solution/re-precipitation) and the grain boundary migration process are assumed in the simulation as the grain growth mechanism. The effects of liquid phase fraction, grain boundary energy and implanted coarse grain are examined. At higher liquid phase content, mass transfer via solid/liquid interfaces plays a major role in grain growth. Growth rate of the implanted grain was higher than that of the matrix grains through solution/re-precipitation and coalescence with neighboring grains. The results of these simulations qualitatively agree with experimental ones and suggest that distribution of liquid phase and carbide particle/carbide grain boundary energy as well as contamination by coarse grain are important factors controlling discontinuous grain growth in WC-Co and WC-VC-Co cemented carbides. The contamination by coarse grains must by avoided in the manufacturing process of fine grain cemented carbides, especially with low Co.
This paper describes the concept and the characteristics of hyper interfacial bonding developed as a new concept joining process for UFG (ultra-fine grained) steel. Hyper interfacial bonding process is characterized by instantaneous surface melting bonding which involves a series of steps, namely, surface heating by high frequency induction, the rapid removing of heating coil and joining by pressing specimens. UFG steels used in this study have the average grain size of 1.25 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. The surface of specimen can be rapidly heated up and melted within 0.2s. Temperature gradient near heated surface is relatively steep, and peak temperature drastically fell down to about 1100K at the depth of 2~3mm away from the heated surface of specimen. Bainite is observed near bond interface, and also M-A (martensite-austenite) islands are observed in HAZ. Grain size increases with increasing heating power, however, the grain size in bonded zone can be restrained under 11 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. Hardened zone is limited to near bond interface, and the maximum hardness is Hv350~Hv390.
Detection of microcrack in {{{{ {Al }_{2 } {O }_{3 } }} ceramics were studided by AE(acoustic emission) technique with 4-point bending test in order to evaluate the fracture process and formation of microcrack. Fully-dense alu-mina ceramics having a different grain size were fabricated by varing the hot-pressing temperature. The grain size of alumina increased with increasing the hot-pressing temperature whereas the bending strength decreasd. The microcracks were observed by SEM and TEM. The generation of AE event increased with increasing the applied load and many AE event was generated at maximum applied load. Alumina with smaller grain size shows the generation of many AE event resulting in an increase of microcrack formation. An intergranular fracture is predominantly observed in fine-grained alumina whereas intragranular fracture occurs predominantly in coarse-grained alumina,. Analysis of micorstructure and AE prove that primary mi-crocracks occur within grain-boundaries of alumina. The larger microcracking were formed by the growth and/or coalesence of primary microcracks. Then the materials become to fracuture by main crack gen-eration at the maximum applied load.

We successively fabricated the Ni metal mask by additive method and evaluated the effects of wetting agents addition on the microstructure, hardness, and friction coefficient. In the process, the additive patterns with fine hole and pitch were made by photolithography technique and subsequently Ni plate was electroformed on the patterns. We found that the microstructure and mechanical properties were significantly varied when the different combinations of the wetting agents were used. When the wetting agents of both SF-1 and SF-2 were added, the microstructure consisted of crystal and amorphous phases, the grain size reduced to 5-40 nm, the RMS value decreased to 11.4 nm and the wear resistance improved. In addition, the hardness was as high as 638 Hv which is higher than that of commercial stainless steel mask and this improvement is probably due to the presence of amorphous Phase and fine grain size. The improvement of the wear resistance can provide a higher reliability and a longer service life.

Equal channel angular(ECA) pressing is the established processing technique in which a polycrystalline metal is pressed through the die to achieve a very high plastic strain. Therefore, the capability to produce an ultra-fine grain size in the materials is provided. To investigate that mechanical properties at elevated temperature have the ultrafine grain ECA pressing, experiments were conducted on an Al-4.8% Mg-0.07% Mn-O.06% Si alloy. After having been solution treated at 773K for 2hrs, the billet for ECA pressing was inserted into the die. And it was pressed through two channel of equal to cross section intersecting at a 90 degree angle. The billet can be extrude repeatedly because of 1:1 extrusion ratio. Since the billet is passed through the cannel for 2 times, a large strain is accumulated in the alloy. The tensile tests on elevated temperature were carried out with initial strain rate of $10^{-3}s^{-1}$ at eight temperature distributed from 293K to 673K.
This article aims to turn out the authentication of archaeological materials by using the paleodose measurement to fine sand-size quartz grains obtained by micro sampling technique. We firstly revealed the validity of micro sampling technique from the paleodoses of two bricks related to Muryong Royal Tomb of Baekje Kingdom. For the purpose of authentication test, four archaeological materials were selected, because they have been insisted that they were manufactured in Goguryeo Kingdom era. After obtaining very few quartz grains by micro sampling technique, each paleodose was evaluated by using SGR (single grain regenerative dose method). All values were very low below 0.2Gy and the reliability was found from those values by using SAR (single aliquot regenerative dose method). Considering the archaeological situation and the general paleodose, the burial time for 1,000 years generally corresponds to about 3.5Gy in Korea, it is concluded that these archaeological materials are all modern counterfeits.
In geological engineering, grouting with Portland cement is a common technique for ground improvement, during which micro-fine cement is applied as a slurry, such that it intrudes into soil voids and decreases soil porosity. To determine the utility and behavior of cements with different Blaine values (index of cement particle fineness) for stabilization of fine sand, non-destructive and destructive tests were employed, such as laser-ray determination of grain size distribution, and sedimentation, permeability, and compressive strength tests. The results of the experimental study demonstrated a suitable mix design for the upper and lower regions of the cement-grading curve that are important for grouting and stabilization. Increasing the fineness of the cement decreased the permeability and increased the compressive strength of grouted sand samples considerably after two weeks. Moreover, relative to finer (higher Blaine value) or coarser (lower Blaine value) cements, cement with a Blaine value of $5,100cm^2/g$ was optimal for void reduction in a grouted soil mass. Overall, study results indicate that cement with an optimum Blaine value can be used to satisfy the designed geotechnical criteria.
High purity, submicron BaTiO3 powder was prepared by a hydrothermal technique using Ba(OH)2.8H2O, TiCl4 and NH4OH as starting raw materials. The submicron BaTiO3 powder was synthesized at 130~23$0^{\circ}C$ for 2.5h to yield highly crystalline particles with a narrow particle distribution. The mole ratio of Ba(OH)2.8H2O/TiO(OH)2 was 1.5. It is possible to obtain BaTiO3 with Ba : Ti=1.00$\pm$0/01. The samples densified well at 13$25^{\circ}C$, showing a uniform and fine grain structure. The grain size ranged between 0.3 and 0.5${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. The products obtained by hydrothermal treatment at various temperatures from 130 to 23$0^{\circ}C$ were characterized by XRD, DTA, BET and SEM etc.
No. 3 Tomb of Bogam-ri, in Naju City, Chollanam-do Province, was a site excavated and inspected from 1996 to 1998 and had a various grave forms, including jar-coffins, stone-chambers and stone-cists. Although most of the metal artifacts excavated from it were severely corroded, we could implement microstructure investigation by collecting samples from the iron axes, iron coffin-nails and iron clamps in which the metal parts were remained. The metal structures were inspected by using metallographic microscope and SEM, and fine components analysis was implemented by ICP. To examine the hardness differences in accordance with the structure distribution, we measured the hardness by structures with Vickers hardness testing machine. As a result of the metal structure inspection, most of them were pure iron, ferrite, and also pearlite, cementite and widmannstaten structures were displayed. We could confirm carbonization was formed on the surface of the iron axes-B, iron coffin-nails-B, and iron clamps-A. There was no carbonization in the rest of the artifacts, and it is not certain that whether the carbonized parts were peeled off through extreme corrosion or they were not carbonized when they were made. In the particular part of a blade, the quality of the material was strengthened through processing. Due to the processing re-grain was caused and fine grain particles were formed. As a result of the ICP component analysis, there were no addition atoms because pure irons were used as materials. In the mean time, No. 17 jar-coffin where the iron axes-A are excavated, is chronologically ordered as from the late-fourth century to the mid-fifth century, and No. 1 and No. 2 stone chambers, where the rest of the artifacts were excavated, as the early-sixth century. It was difficult to relate the periodic differences with the manufacture technique artifacts which we inspected because there were no distinct characteristics of the manufacture technique of the metal structures and it is impossible to conclude the artifacts and sites are at the same period although their periods are different.
When alloys are vacuum-deposited on cooled substrates, super-rapidly cooled alloy films in the unequilibrium state can be obtained. As an application of this method, Ag-Cu, Ag-Ni and Ag-C alloys were successfully produced, and their mechanical properties with tempering temperature were investigated. The following results were obtained : (1) In case of Ag-Cu alloys, the solid solution was hardened by tempering at $150^{\circ}C$. The hardening is considered to occur when the solid solution begins to decompose into ${\alpha}$ and ${\beta}$ phases. The Knoop hardness number of a 40 at.%Ag-Cu alloy film deposited on a cooled glass substrate was 390 $kg/mm^2$. The as-deposited films were generally very hard but fractured under stresses below their elastic limits. (2) In case of Ag-Ni and Ag-C alloys, after the tempering of 4 at.%Ni-Ag alloy at $400^{\circ}C$ and of 1 and 2 at.%C-Ag alloys at $200^{\circ}C$, they were hardened by the precipitation of fine nickel and carbon particles. The linear relationship between proof stress vs. $(grain\;diameter)^{-l/2}$ for bulk silver polycrystals can be applied to vacuum-deposited films up to about 0.1 ${\mu}m$ grain diameter, but the proof stress of ultra-fine grained silver with grain diameters of less than 0.1 ${\mu}m$ was smaller than the value expected from the Petch's relation.
